Xbox SmartGlass nabs Android update, now supports 7-inch or larger tablets, stops screen sleep

Xbox SmartGlass nabs update, now supports 7inch or larger tablets, alwayson Experiences

Microsoft's SmartGlass for Android app has just hit version 1.5 thanks to a fresh update on Google Play. The app, which lets users control their XBox via a smartphone or tablet, will now be optimized to work on 7-inch and larger Android tablets. Other new features include an (unfortunately-worded) "always-on" Smartglass Experiences state, which actually just prevents your handset or slate from sleeping while they're running, along with bug fixes and "numerous design and usability improvements." We'll have to give it a further play to see if there's anything juicy buried in the latter, but meanwhile, you can grab it at the break.

WSJ: Microsoft's next generation of Surface tablets includes a 7-inch version

Wonder what a Nexus 7 / Kindle Fire / iPad Mini fighter from Microsoft would look like? You may find out soon, as the Wall Street Journal has just posted a "breaking news" alert that it's heard Microsoft is developing a new lineup of Surface tablets (which it's confirmed before) including a 7-inch version, which it expects to take into mass production later this year. We've seen hints of smaller tablets already, with recent Windows 8 policy changes allowing devices featuring lower-res screens. It's filled out a few other details now, crediting the info to unnamed sources familiar with its product plans who claim Microsoft realized it needed something to compete with the smaller competition (shocker). The report ends with a footnote on the rumored Microsoft-branded phone, which is said to still be in testing but component suppliers are not sure if it will actually come to market. While we wait for further updates, consider this your opportunity to make suggestions on what should change in Redmond's second assault on slates.

Wikipad in miniature: 7-inch gaming tablet to debut in spring for $249, 10.1-inch sees further delay

Wikipad in miniature 7inch gaming tablet to debut in spring for $249, 101inch sees further delay

When a company delays a product for "minor refinement," we typically expect to see small changes that contribute to a stronger overall product. That wasn't Wikipad's approach -- when it took its namesake gaming tablet into the lab for "minor" tweaks, it took a few inches off its screen size. The Wikipad is now a 7-inch tablet, slated to launch in spring for $249. It's smaller, the company says, but no less powerful -- it's keeping the Tegra 3 GPU the original build promised, not to mention 1GB of DDR3 RAM, 16GB of Flash memory, a 2-megapixel front facing camera and a 1,280 x 800 resolution display.

Wikipad's President of sales, Fraser Townley, told us the gamepad design hasn't changed much either. "We took the pinball wizard approach," he said. "We made everybody in the room shut their eyes, and try the controllers. It's not about the look, it's about the feel. Once we got the feel right, then we could worry about the look. That's how the ten inch was born, and that's how the seven inch stayed the same." The attachment boasts new buttons (now labeled a, b, x and y) with a chrome finish, but seems otherwise unchanged. Wikipad is mum on specific availability, but we're told we can expect to hear more after Chinese New Year. As the 10.1-inch original design? It's still coming, but Townley couldn't it narrow it down further than "before Christmas." Read on for Wikipad's official press announcement, or click here to find out how the tablet was cut down to size.

ASUS video showcases 7inch MeMo Pad, flaunts what the $150 tablet can do

Lately, ASUS hasn't exactly been the best at keeping some of its secrets under wraps, but the company is trying to be as good as it can be about helping potential customers better understand its devices. More specifically, it's the recently announced 7-inch MeMo Pad, with the Taiwan-based outfit taking to YouTube to release a simple and somewhat informative video on some of the tidbits you can expect out of the Jelly Bean-loaded, budget-friendly tablet. Naturally, ASUS is quick to point out how the MeMo Pad's relatively small chassis "fits perfect in your palm," as well as showing off how effortless it is to stay in the social loop with video calling capabilities and things such as BuddyBuzz. Other touted features of the 7-inch slate include its expandable storage via that microSD slot, plus the easy access to various productivity and entertainment apps like MyPainter, SuperNote Lite and ASUS Studio -- oh, and for folks who enjoy a little color, the previously seen trio of Spectrum Covers can also be spotted making a quick cameo. LG to show 5.5-inch 1080p screen, 324ppi 7-inch tablet screen at CES

LG is bringing a bag full of high-resolution displays to CES for the geeks who were good this year. Practically every size is covered - from 4.7" phone screens to 84" TVs - and they bet on thin bezels and high resolutions.

The pocketable screens start with the 4.7" unit, which aims to impress with a bezel that's only about 1mm thick, so phones that use it should be more compact than current 4.7" phones.

Then there's the 5.5" FullHD phablet screen, which packs 403ppi pixel density. That's close to the 5" FullHD screens that are going into next year's flagships and well above current-gen phablets.

Moving up in size, LG will also show off a 7" screen with 1920x1200 resolution and 324ppi pixel density (virtually the same as the iPhone's screen and higher than both the iPad and Nexus 7 pixel densities).

Also on display, if you'll pardon the pun, will be a 12.9" QSXGA display (2560x1700) for ultrabooks (for comparison, the 13.3" MacBook Pro has a 2560x1600 screen). This display will use AH-IPS tech as will the phablet and tablet displays.

There will be a 13.3" laptop screen too, this one with an impressively narrow 2mm bezel.

That's it for the mobile solutions, but the desk monitor and TV solutions continue with the high-resolution, thin bezel trend.

On the TV front, LG is bringing UHD TVs (3840x2160, 4x FullHD) in 55", 65" and 84" sizes, which will use the company's FPR 3D tech. A 4K2K 30-inch PC monitor packs even more pixels - 4096x2160. A 23.8" monitor from the Neo-Blade series will also be at CES, with an "ultra-narrow bezel," though the press release gives no concrete numbers.

Returning from this year's CES will be the 55" WRGB OLD TV, which packs impressive specs despite being a year older - 4mm bezel and 3.5kg of weight (around the same as a 17" laptop).

Acer Iconia B1 is another 7-inch super-cheap tablet

Acer Iconia B1 is another 7-inch super-cheap tabletCheap as chips (credit: Benchmark.rs)

Acer is planning to launch a 7-inch budget tablet next year called the Iconia B1, as the PC maker looks to expand its reach in the handheld market.

This is according to the Wall Street Journal who says it's spoken to a source with direct knowledge of the Iconia B1 project over at Acer - a tablet which will come with a very low price tag.

Going head to head with the likes of the Google Nexus 7 and Amazon Kindle Fire HD, Acer is so-say planning on stealing the show by offering the Iconia B1 for just $99 (around $60/AU$95).

According to the source the Acer Iconia B1 will pack a 1.2GHz dual-core processor and a 7-inch 1024 x 600 display – neither of which matches the power and output of its closest rivals.

Images of the Acer Iconia B1 leaked last week on a Serbian forum, so it looks like Acer is certainly readying something, but whether it will sport that attractive price tag is another question.

Acer isn't the only company supposedly planning a ridiculously cheap tablet, with several rumours surrounding a $99 Nexus 7 also refusing to go away.

We will be visiting all the key manufacturers at CES 2013 and MWC 2013 to find out what their plans are for the 7-inch market, so stay tuned for more.
