Microsoft releases Surface RT and Pro updates, aims to fix WiFi issues again

Microsoft releases Surface RT and Pro updates, aims to fix WiFi issues again

Surface RT devices have already scored two updates that aim to fix problems with 'limited' WiFi connectivity, and now Microsoft is pushing out a third patch that aims to put its wireless troubles to rest. Redmond's fresh code also beefs up support for a "wide range" of access points and stomps out system crashes caused by some WiFi issues. As for Surface Pro, its own April update smoothes out Surface Type and Touch cover connectivity kinks, adds support for Japanese keyboards on North American hardware, stomps a bug that disables the WiFi driver when airplane mode is toggled and addresses an issue with touch navigation in the UEFI boot menu. Microsoft's remedy should get sucked down to your slate automatically, but you can grab it by hand through Windows Update as well.

Latest Hulu rumors suggest it could be up for sale, again

While viewers enjoy promotions like free Star Trek and Kurosawa, Hulu's owners are once again considering selling the video streaming site. The last bit of news was that News Corp and Disney were considering buying one another out, but according to Reuters, anonymous sources confirm that the board is reaching out to several potential buyers while it considers its options. Another possibility from Variety suggests that the two would remain as part owners, and welcome another party to join, perhaps CBS. This wouldn't be the first time Hulu's owners tried to sell the site however, as it went through the whole process -- without changing hands -- back in 2011. Perhaps this time, with a new CEO in place, all the companies involved can figure out what they want Hulu to be going forward.

HTC One leaks in press shot (again), this time in black

HTC One leaks in press shot again, this time in black

When HTC CEO Peter Chou showed off his company's next flagship phone, the M7 / HTC One a few weeks ago, he had both black and silver versions in hand. Shortly after, known press pic source evleaks snagged a promo image in silver and now has posted another to Unwired View, this time of the black one. Still sporting a unique two button design seen previously and what we assume is a Sense 5.0 homescreen widget, this pic also flashes New York localized info, as compared to the earlier leak's London home. For now, we're left counting down until its expected unveiling on the 19th in... New York and London -- see you there.

iOS lock screen can be bypassed with some button mashing... again (video)

iPhone 5 review

It seems that every time Apple introduces a new version of iOS, it creates some new method to get past the software's lock screen. A YouTube tutorial reveals the rather simple combination of button presses and fake emergency calls necessary to give you access to anyone's iDevice -- or more specifically to the iOS phone module, from where you can make calls or view and edit contacts. You'll have to be quick-fingered, however, as you have to push the home button rapidly after getting into the iPhone's contact list. You can learn how to do it after the break, but until Cupertino issues an update, we'd suggest keeping your beloved fondlephone close by.

Microsoft starts shipping Surface Pros again, promises more to market 'quickly'

Microsoft starts shipping

Microsoft's trying to address the recent shortfall of Surface Pro models, and has vowed via its Surface Pro blog to get more into the market "as quickly as we can." As such, it's begun dispatching 64GB SKUs to Best Buy, Staples and its own Microsoft Store in the US, with Canada to follow in a few days. 128GB SKUs will ship "later this week" to retailers, according to Redmond, "with some units available by the end of the week." All flavors of the tablet-cum-laptop disappeared from shelves shortly after they arrived in retail stores and online, both stateside and north of the border. The company said it'll fulfill orders for customers who made a reservation first, but that your local retailer "should have (stock) soon," too.

Amazon green-lights five kids shows, assures that parents will never see their Kindle Fires again

Prime Instant Video Greenlights Its First Children's Pilots for Production

Amazon Studios, the original movie and series production arm of Amazon.com, announced today that five children's test pilots have been greenlit for production. This announcement comes on the heels of the first pilot production commitment in December, which greenlit six comedy pilots, bringing the total number of Amazon Studios pilots currently in production to 11.

"Production is already underway for the first set of comedy pilots we announced last month, and now we are excited to add even more pilots to the list-five amazing preschool children's series"

Once completed, all 11 pilots will be posted on Amazon Instant Video, Prime Instant Video, Lovefilm UK and Lovefilm Germany for Amazon customers to watch for free. Viewer feedback will help determine which series Amazon Studios should produce.

"Production is already underway for the first set of comedy pilots we announced last month, and now we are excited to add even more pilots to the list-five amazing preschool children's series," said Roy Price, Director of Amazon Studios. "Our children's series come from industry luminaries with credits such as Blue's Clues, Sid the Science Kid and Dino Dan. We think parents-and our very youngest customers-are going to love the magical combination of entertainment and learning that they'll discover in these children's series."

"We are thrilled to be working with Amazon Studios on our pilot and can't wait to soar into a creative arts curriculum with Creative Galaxy," said Angela C. Santomero (Blue's Clues), creator and executive producer of the debut series, which is one of five children's series to receive a pilot order. "We know that art can have a powerfully positive effect on children, and through our proven signature approach to preschool television, we will actively help young viewers learn how to think creatively in their own lives. Working with Amazon Studios has been fantastic, and we look forward to jumping into the production process."

Children's pilots include:

Creative Galaxy

Creative Galaxy is an animated interactive art adventure series, designed to inspire kids' creative thinking through crafts, story, music and dance. The series was created by Angela Santomero, creator of Super Why!, the Emmy-nominated literacy series, Blue's Clues and Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood.

Oz Adventures

In this innovative problem solving series, Dot, Dorothy's daughter, goes off to Oz everyday with the children of the beloved characters from L. Frank Baum's classic book, The Wizard of Oz. In each episode, the yellow brick road leads Dot to a new magical location where she solves problems alongside her Oz friends.

Teeny Tiny Dogs

Produced by The Jim Henson Company (Sid the Science Kid, Dinosaur Train) and created by Howard Baker (Rugrats), Teeny Tiny Dogs follows Butch, Butterfly, Dinky and Polly as they help one another navigate the big world despite their teeny, tiny, small size. This series promotes happiness through friendship, learning, growing and developing a strong sense of self as seen through the eyes of canine friends.

Tumbleaf

Tumbleaf was created by Drew Hodges and Bix Pix Studios, an award-winning stop motion studio. The series, aimed at preschoolers, is set in a whimsical land where a small blue fox named Fig plays each day and discovers adventure, friendship and love around every bend in the path. Children will be enriched by narratives that promote play through exploration and cognitive reasoning.

The Untitled J.J. Johnson Project

The Untitled J.J. Johnson Project revolves around Anne, a young scientist, who creates three robot helpers to assist her scientific experiments in the back of her dad's junkyard. This science-based series from creator J.J. Johnson (Dino Dan, This is Emily Yeung) aims to introduce kids to science and technology in a fun, new way.

These five new pilots join the six comedy pilots already in production: Alpha House, Browsers, Dark Minions, The Onion Presents: The News, Supanatural and Those Who Can't.

About Amazon Studios

Since its launch in November 2010, more than 14,000 movie scripts and 2,500 series pilot scripts have been submitted to Amazon Studios. The original series announced today will be added to the Amazon Studios series development slate, which currently boasts 20 additional projects.

Amazon Studios continues to invite series creators to upload their proposals for comedy and children's programming at http://studios.amazon.com/getting-started/series or submit them privately via Amazon Studios.

Nintendo Q3 earnings show 3 million Wii Us sold, sales forecasts lowered again

Nintendo Q3 earnings report show

Nintendo's Q3 earnings report is out, and it's sold just over 3 million units of its new Wii U console (at a loss) along with 11.69 million pieces of software. The other big news is that it's adjusted sales forecasts downward -- again, after it announced they were being cut back in October. However, since the flagship console is sold at a loss, while Nintendo is predicting 17 percent lower revenue, its prediction for net income has actually moved up by eight billion yen ($87 million).

It's not all bad news however, as it's showing about $160 million in net income for the year, compared with last year's losses. The 3DS has jumped up to 29.84 million sold, while the original Wii is within shouting distance of the 100 million number. Need more numbers? 6.1-inch 1080p Huawei Ascend Mate smiles for the camera again

We’ve already seen pictures of the upcoming monster phone that is the Huawei Ascend Mate, equipped with a gigantic 6.1-inch 1080p display, but how about even more detailed images of the device?

Sure, those will leave little to the imagination come CES in just about a week, but we’d still like to know about what this upcoming supersized phablet will look like.

First, you’d notice the humongous display that puts the Huawei Ascend Mate in a territory right in between a tablet and a smartphone. It’s hard to tell how practical this form factor is when we have not used one yet, so we’d rather leave our comments on that for later on.

What we can comment on is the specs and those include a 1.8GHz HiSilicon K3V3 quad-core processor, an impressive 4,000mAh battery, all packed in a 9.9mm body with a slight convex curve on the back.

Additionally, you get 2GB of RAM, and a 13-megapixel rear camera, all making this look like a very capable computer that you can put in your pocket (if you have larger pockets, that is).

Take a look at the pictures below, this will probably be one of the more exciting announcements at CES 2013, and make sure to mark January 7th and 8th on your calendars - we’ll be at the showroom floor bringing you all the latest gadgets right around then.

Huawei Ascend Mate leaks again, comparing its 6.1 inch screen to stable mate Huawei Ascend D2

Last weekend, we showed you the excitement that took over a Huawei store in Guangzhou, China when company chairman Richard Yu pulled out the Huawei Ascend Mate to show off the device. Quickly, a throng surrounded the executive, all dying to get a peek at the 6.1 inch handset prior to its appearance at next month's CES 2013 in Las Vegas. The majority of us were not lucky enough to have been in the Huawei store at the right time to see the Huawei Ascend Mate in person. But we can take a look at the device in a series of new pictures that show the Ascend Mate next to another new Huawei model, the Huawei Ascend D2.

The specs on the device are still being guessed at, but will be released at CES 2013. At this point, speculation points to a quad-core 1.8GHz processor, most likely developed in house, 2GB of RAM, a 13MP camera and a 4000mAh battery. In other words, besides the larger screen, the Huawei Ascend Mate specs are what you would expect to see on a 2013 high-end phone.

An ad for the Huawei Ascend Mate also was leaked, making it clear that the Chinese manufacturer has been targeting Samsung with this device all along. The ad shows the outline of the 6.1 inch screen compared with the outline of a 5.5 inch screen. Hmm. Wonder what device that is supposed to be. Earlier this month, Huawei Senior Vice President Yu Chengdong told prospective buyers of the Samsung GALAXY Note II to wait for the launch of the Huawei Ascend Mate and he called Samsung's device "grossly overpriced."

Tufty: You Will Never Look at a Teddy Bear the Same Way Ever Again

This story will display in ...Nov 24, 2012 9:00 PM

Tufty: You Will Never Look at a Teddy Bear the Same Way Ever Again You probably had a teddy bear as a kid, or some other stuffed animal. We all did. There's nothing wrong with that, right? Not here in the real world (probably) but according to the short film Tufty, you've got some blood on your hands.

The short opens with a small boy reaching for a stuffed bear, but it's not him the film follows, but rather the trails and tribulations of that poor "toy." You can probably guess where this is going, but it's so worth watching those live teddy bears frolicking in the wild. But beware, you'll probably never be able to look at a teddy bear again without imagining the gory removal of its bloody innards.

Of course, you could definitely read some "animal rights" undertones into this, at levels you may or may not agree with, but let's just focus on something we can all agree on: watching those teddy bears run is f*cking hilarious. [The Best Short Films]
