Study suggests voice-to-text 'just as dangerous' as texting while driving

If you thought you were driving safe when activating your voice-to-text service or starting up Siri, a survey by the Texas Transportation Institute thinks it might dull your reactions just as much as finger-based typing. Its new study compared 'traditional' text messaging with voice-to-text and found that drivers still took about twice as long to react as they did when they weren't trying to communicate with their phone. According to Christine Yager, who led the research, "Eye contact to the roadway also decreased, no matter which texting method was used." The study kept participant numbers low, monitoring 43 drivers along a (car-free) test track.

In fact, voice-to-text often took longer than manual input, due to the need to correct typing discrepancies while using the software: "You're still using your mind to try to think of what you're trying to say, and that by proxy causes some driving impairment, and that decreases your response time." The bigger issue is that the drivers apparently felt safer when using voice-based entry, even though test results proved that response times were just as negatively affected. "It is important to educate the public that even these seemingly new distractions are still distractions, and it will help people be safer when they get into the vehicle," Yager added.

This Spooky Google Car Is Driving Itself

This Spooky Google Car Is Driving Itself Google's driverless car prototype has been around for a couple of years now—but have you ever spotted one in the wild? We just did, and it's equal parts insane, terrifying, and hugely cool.

Our own Brent Rose saw this car, whose driver is not touching the wheel, cruising down highway 80 in Oakland. "She was not using hands at all. Somebody next to her had a laptop so clearly it was just testing but pretty awesome. They didn't kill us or anybody else."

They're out there. Don't cut them off. They are driven by robot brains—and unlike an Apple Car, this thing does know how to follow you back home. [Brent "Four Lunches" Rose]

Chris Rea: Driving Home for Christmas

This story will display in ...Dec 24, 2012 7:00 PM

Chris Rea: Driving Home for Christmas Right now, millions of people around the globe are desperately trying to make it home for Christmas. Some of those journeys will go smoothly; others will be completely frustrating. But, like Chris Rea sings, even if it takes some time, don't worry: you'll get there. Eventually.

Written years before it was actually recorded and released, the song—unsurprisingly—takes its inspiration from a Christmas drive home when Rea was stuck in traffic. He told the BBC back in 2009 that his wife had driven the length of the UK to pick him up by car because it was cheaper than catching a train. Sadly, the traffic getting out of London was bad enough that he found time to write a song during the trip.

He refers to it as a "car version of a carol". Regardless of whether you think that's true, it does at least carry a strong message: however bad your trip seems, remember you have plenty to look forward to when you finally make it home. [YouTube]
