Discovery, TLC apps for iPad add 'Plus' second screen experience

Discovery, TLC apps for iPad add 'Plus' second screen experience

While Discovery and TLC have offered some show-specific second screen content before, the latest updates to their apps put a new spin on it. Referred to as Discovery Plus and TLC Plus, the new features are currently iPad-only (coming soon to iPhone), bringing behind the scenes info, photos, quizzes and more for shows on the networks, ready to audio sync with live broadcasts or DVR viewing. Other changes in version 2.5 of the apps include new schedule info that lets you know when new episodes are airing for a show, and what's next up to premiere. We're still not sure if this approach to the second screen is enough to consistently make viewers remember to grab their mobile device while watching, but you can try it out during an episode of Dual Survival and let us know how it goes.

Hulu Plus gets 'Kids Lock' feature on iPad, enhances the experience for little ones

Hulu's Kids Lock has already been implemented on Android, and now it's time for the children-tailored, itty-bitty feature to make its way to iOS -- well, at least to the iPad. It's rather simple, really: Kids Lock essentially comes in the form of a virtual button on the app, allowing parents -- or whoever's in charge -- to easily secure their tiny loved ones into the Hulu Kids experience. Meanwhile, getting back to the TV shows and movies watched by the bosses of the house is fairly uncomplicated -- all there's to do is enter the account password and bam, all is golden and everyone can go back to watching Parenthood. Aside from Kids Lock, v2.7 doesn't add too much more, save for a few bugs being fixed and some backend enhancements to make Hulu's iOS application more stable overall.

NVIDIA's GeForce Experience gaming tune-up reaches open beta

NVIDIA GeForce Experience beta

NVIDIA wants to take the mystery out of gaming performance through its GeForce Experience. It's been hard to appreciate that when the app has been in closed testing for well over a month, however -- so it's good news that the company just recently opened the beta program to everyone. Along with bringing faster and better-looking graphics to the PC gaming masses, the public version widens the optimizations to include Core 2 processors, 2,560 x 1,440 displays and games like Far Cry 3 and Mechwarrior Online. There's no word yet on when the app will reach its finished form, although we hope it's sooner rather than later when Project Shield's remote PC game streaming will depend on GeForce Experience to run. For now, players running Windows can grab the beta at the source link.

CES 2013: Sony's TV SideView aims to enhance your TV using experience

Sony's TV SideView aims to enhance your TV using experienceServing up extra TV on the side

Sony has launched its new TV SideView app at CES 2013 in Las Vegas as it looks to offer consumers an even better TV experience.

The app which is available on Android and iOS smartphones and tablets allows users to browse the EPG, find out additional information on programmes including details on cast and crew, and find related shows to what's been watched in the past – all without having to inturrpt what's currently on the TV.

Once you've found something you like you can then use the app as a remote control, allowing you to change the channel, adjust the volume and press the red button.

SideView incorporates third party services such as Netflix and YouTube while also supporting Sony's own Music and Video Unlimited packages.

Although the app is available on various non-Sony hardware, you will need a Sony made Smart TV and/or Blu-ray player which supports this fancy technology.

It's certainly a nice idea and we're always fans of being able to control home applications and entertainment systems from our mobile devices, and it's good to see Sony embracing a universal appeal instead of forcing you into its own exclusive ecosystem.
