Google Maps and TiVo Netflix integration on Nintendo Wii U delayed beyond January

Nintendo's Wii U was supposed to get TVii when the console launched back in late November. That did not happen. Then, when it did launch in late December, two key features were missing: TiVo and Netflix. Despite insistence that the former would arrive in January 2013, Nintendo tells us that both are delayed beyond January to an unknown point in "early 2013." The company specifically notes that said integration is planned for the United States.

Google Maps and Street View, custom-tailored for the Wii U's tablet-like GamePad, were also given a January 2013 launch window when we first heard back in early December that they were headed to the Wii U. As it turns out, those are also delayed, albeit to a more precise "first quarter of 2013." This news comes on the heels of below expectation Wii U console sales, and word of not one, but two console updates coming later this year aimed at optimizing the hardware -- an issue we struggled with during our review of the console last year.

Nokia Lumia 900 on AT&T may get Windows Phone 78 on January 30th

There's been hints of a Windows Phone 7.8 update looming for the AT&T-spec Lumia 900, but little sign of a real timetable. As it turns out, owners hoping to move beyond 7.5 might be satisfied very quickly. Engadget has obtained an AT&T memo that claims the upgrade is rolling out on January 30th -- as in, tomorrow. We don't see any tweaks mentioned beyond what Microsoft itself said last year, although any update would most likely include Nokia-specific extras on top of the official package. We've reached out to AT&T, Microsoft and Nokia, and we'll let you know if they provide tangible details. Whatever their answers, we'll know the truth before long.

Official Android updates HTC One X: Following in Rogers' footsteps, Telus has released its Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) and Sense 4+ update for over-the-air installation. The software weighs in at approximately 629MB. [MobileSyrup] Samsung Galaxy S II: T-Mobile has begun delivery of an incremental update to address an issue with the Qualcomm SoC. The software also brings security fixes and S Voice improvements. [Android Central] Samsung Galaxy S II: Android 4.1.2 (Jelly Bean) is now available for the international version of this handset (i9100), which includes Samsung's Nature UX enhancements. US retailer pegs Nexus 7 dock release for January 10th, we remain wary

ASUS' official dock for the Nexus 7 has been an elusive beast, to put it mildly: Americans, at least, have had to sit tight for half a year if they weren't content with third-party hardware. We just might be reaching the end of that road, if B&H is right. The retailer is listing the audio-capable cradle as arriving January 10th for $40. The accessory could be tantalizingly close as a result, although we'll believe it when we're charging our tablets -- we've seen as many retailers take stabs in the dark on release dates as those that use real information, so we may still be left waiting in a week's time.

Apple acknowledges Do Not Disturb bug, says it will magically fix itself on January 7th

Well, it's no "you're holding it wrong," but we can't say we're 100 percent satisfied with Apple's response to the recent discovery of a bug affecting iOS's Do Not Disturb feature. Starting January first, ringers failed to turn back on after the predetermined silent period. Today Cupertino seemed to acknowledge the existence of the flaw but, rather than offer a patch, it simply told customers to be patient:

"Do Not Disturb scheduling feature will resume normal functionality after January 7, 2013. Before this date, you should manually turn the Do Not Disturb feature on or off."

Understandably, it'll probably take longer than five days to find the offending code, whip up a fix, test it and roll it out to users. Still, a thorough explanation is always appreciated and the iOS faithful have already been patient enough.

So droid razr maxx hd by motorola, samsung galaxy note 2, samsung galaxy s3, htc one x+ and droid dna by htc are not worth buying? I prefer motorola nowadays for a close to stock look and feel all around, but these devices are hot sellers and they aren't nexus

Japanese iPad users will finally be able to buy ebooks

On Monday, a new Nikkei report stated Apple would be expanding its iBookstore to Japan, joining the likes of Amazon, Kobo, and Google.

Though an exact date wasn't given, Apple has reportedly garnered the support of publishers like Kadokawa, Kodansha, and Shogakukan among others to provide ebooks in Japan as early as January.

Nikkei also indicated Japanese readers would be able to find more than 80,000 titles at launch from local publishers alone.

Despite iBooks launching alongside the iPad in Japan in 2010, Apple had previously been unable to actually sell any ebooks through the app.

Apple is the fourth provider to sell ebooks in Japan, which means the company will have some ground to make up on its rivals whenever the iBookstore does launch.

Fortunately for Apple, the company is responsible for 60 percent of the tablet market in Japan, giving them a bit of a leg up when it comes to the install base awaiting the service.

With so many competitors vying for domination of the ebook landscape in Japan, the industry is expected to grow to exceed some 200 billion yen (US$2.3B,UK£1.42B, AUD$2.23B) over the course of the next couple of years.

Currently, the ebook market is estimated to be worth about 70 billion yen (US$807M, UK£497M, AUD$773M) in revenue combined.

Sony 'Xperia Z' and 'Xperia X' rumored for CES unveiling, January release

By now we’ve heard plenty of leaked details about Sony Mobile’s next big thing, the ‘Yuga,’ also rumored to come to market as the Xperia Z. We’re due a 5-inch, 1080p phone with a glass back, a 13MP camera and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, if recent rumors are to be believed. But fresh details from China suggest that the phone could be released as early as mid-January in that country, and in some territories another model, the ‘Xperia X,’ may be offered instead.

The reports come from Chinese site ePrice, which has a history of leaking information about upcoming Sony phones. The Xperia X, it’s said, will be almost identical to the Z, with only design differences being reported. If this sounds familiar, it’s because Sony adopted a similar strategy this year with its Xperia T and Xperia TX. The T was released in Europe with an external microSD slot, while the TX hit Asian markets a smaller battery.

ePrice reports that the Xperia Z is almost certain to be unveiled at CES in early January, which should come as no surprise considering Sony’s track record of showcasing major phones at the event. A domestic Chinese launch is purportedly scheduled for around Jan. 15. No word on when Xperia Z or X will launch in Europe, but with strong Android competition from HTC expected at Mobile World Congress in February, Sony may want to follow up with a quick international launch.

Ca-Fi Dashlinq upsizes in-car Android infotainment, arrives in January

There may be a size war brewing among Android-based infotainment system builders. Ca-Fi thought it was sitting pretty with its 6.2-inch unit earlier this year, but we're starting to think it was rankled by similarly-sized devices like Parrot's Asteroid Smart -- that would help explain its upcoming, 7-inch Dashlinq. Along with one-upping a nemesis, the double-DIN system brings multitouch zoom to a heavily customized (if slightly creaky) Android 2.3 interface. Otherwise, we're looking at a familiar, if fairly sophisticated approach: there's a dedicated media DSP, GPS navigation, an SD card slot for local content and internet access through 3G or WiFi. Ca-Fi expects the Dashlinq to arrive in January for €499 ($657), at which point we hope there's at least a momentary truce in the battle for the car's center stack.
