Andy Rubin says Android was first built for cameras, we're glad he reconsidered

Andy Rubin

Most of us who've followed the history of Android tend to presume that it was a single-minded effort to open up the smartphone world. Not so, ex-Android chief Andy Rubin says. The OS co-creator just mentioned at a Tokyo summit that Android was first pitched in April 2004 as the foundation for connected cameras that would store photos online. When it became clear that the digital photography market was relatively small, the fledgling team shifted its attention to cellphones within the space of five months. We know how history played out after that fateful decision, and arguably smartphones are richer for it -- that said, it's amusing to discover that smart shooters like the Galaxy Camera just represent Android's original strategy come full circle.

Visualized: Sony teases prototype 4K cameras and lenses at NAB

DNP Visualized Sony teases prototype 4K cameras and lenses at NAB

At its NAB 2013 press conference, Sony told us several times that it never stops thinking about the future. It's fitting, then, that in addition to announcing pricing for two 4K sets, the company gave us a taste of what's to come a few years down the line. A wide variety of lenses, including both current models and some prototypes, appeared on stage briefly -- behind ropes, no less -- and while we got no shortage of shots, specs, model names and any other particulars were strictly off-limits. Current optics included basic wide-angle and telephoto models, and of the two prototype cameras on display, one was of particular interest, due in no small part to its DSLR-like form-factor -- this could perhaps become Sony's version of the Canon EOS-1D C. Unfortunately, Sony says that these devices won't make it to market for quite some time, so photogs will have to make do with this eye candy for now.Sony prototype 4K cameras and lensesSee all photoswhen.eng("eng.galleries.init")

Red unveils the Motion mount for Epic and Scarlet cameras to eliminate CMOS rolling shutter

Red unveils the Motion Mount for global shutter capability on Epic, Scarlet

Red has just announced the Red Motion lens mounting system for Epic and Scarlet motion camera systems that'll eliminate one of their chief snags: the dreaded CMOS rolling shutter. Though details are scant, it seems it'll do that in a similar manner to the Tessive system (see More Coverage), where a second liquid crystal shutter is placed in front of the main sensor and timed to engage only when the camera's CMOS is fully "open." That'll help eliminate artifacts like skew / judder in pans, repeating motion artifacts (think distorted propellers) and flicker from lights or displays, among others. The mount also brings an 8x electronic ND filter adjustable to 1/100th of an f-stop, partially negating the need for a matte-box in bright lighting situations. The Red Motion's drawback is that it'll cost you a stop of speed even when the ND is off, meaning you may have to change to a classic mount in low-light situations. Red's showing it now at its NAB booth-cum-factory and it'll ship out this fall in PL-mount form (with a Canon mount arriving later) for $4,500. Check the source for more discussion.

Rambus Binary Pixel brings single-shot HDR photos to phone cameras

Rambus Unveils Binary Pixel Technology For Dramatically Improved Image Quality in Mobile Devices

Breakthrough technology Provides Single-Shot High Dynamic Range and Improved Low-Light Sensitivity in a Single Explosure

SUNNYVALE, CALIFORNIA AND BARCELONA, SPAIN – February 25, 2013 – Rambus Inc. (NASDAQ: RMBS), the innovative technology solutions company that brings invention to market, today unveiled breakthrough binary pixel technology that dramatically improves the quality of photos taken from mobile devices. The Rambus Binary Pixel technology includes image sensor and image processing architectures with single-shot high dynamic range (HDR) and improved low-light sensitivity for better videos and photos in any lighting condition.

"Today's compact mainstream sensors are only able to capture a fraction of what the human eye can see," said Dr. Martin Scott, chief technology officer at Rambus. "Our breakthrough binary pixel technology enables a tremendous performance improvement for compact imagers capable of ultra high-quality photos and videos from mobile devices."

As improvements are made in resolution and responsiveness, more and more consumers are using the camera functionality on their smart phone as the primary method for taking photos and capturing memories. However, high contrast scenes typical in daily life, such as bright landscapes, sunset portraits, and scenes with both sunlight and shadow, are difficult to capture with today's compact mobile sensors - the range of bright and dark details in these scenes simply exceeds the limited dynamic range of mainstream CMOS imagers.

This binary pixel technology is optimized at the pixel level to sense light similar to the human eye while maintaining comparable form factor, cost and power of today's mobile and consumer images. The results are professional-quality images and videos from mobile devices that capture the full gamut of details in dark and bright intensities.

Benefits of binary pixel technology:

· Improved image quality optimized at the pixel level

· Single-shot HDR photo and video capture operates at high-speed frame-rates

· Improved signal-to-noise performance in low-light conditions

· Extended dynamic range through variable temporal and spatial oversampling

· Silicon-proven technology for mobile form factors

· Easily integratable into existing SoC architectures

· Compatible with current CMOS image sensor process technology

The Rambus binary pixel has been demonstrated in a proof-of-concept test-chip and the technology is currently available for integration into future mobile and consumer image sensors. For additional information visit www.rambus.com/binarypixel.

Red sues Sony over patents, wants disputed F-series cameras 'destroyed'

Red sues Sony over patents, wants offending Fseries cameras 'destroyed'

We reported that Sony was going "Red hunting" with it's new F-series pro camcorders, but it looks like Red has flipped that scenario. It's suing Sony for allegedly violating two of its patents -- asking for an injunction to stop sales plus an award for damages, and even that that the F5, F55 and F65 models in question be "delivered up and destroyed." The Hobbit camera-maker claims the video cams have "resulted in lost sales, reduced the business and profit of Red, and greatly injured the general reputation of Red." The patents involve Red's implementation of RAW video, but no details were given as to how it thinks those processes were infringed. Anyway, you can now add high-end video cameras to the growing playbill of patent follies.

CES 2013: Olympus launches new tough and high-zoom compact cameras

Olympus launches new tough and high-zoom compact camerasThe SH-50 will be the new flagship long zoom camera for Olympus

A total of six new compact cameras have been introduced by Olympus, all of which fit into its Tough and high-zoom Traveller range. The flagship compacts in both ranges borrow technology from the Olympus OM-D, the company's high-end compact system camera (CSC).

The Olympus TG-2 follows on from last year's Olympus TG-1, and features a f/2.0 high speed lens. Aperture priority shooting is also available, which gives control over background blur.

Other features include GPS tracking, 240fps high-speed moving recording for super-slow motion playback, and a 12 million pixel CMOS sensor. The 4x zoom lens starts at 25mm (35mm equivalent).

CES 2013: Two new Nikon compact cameras announced

Two new Nikon compact cameras announcedThe new Nikon S6500 has a 12x zoom lens and Wi-Fi technology built-in

Nikon has announced two new compact cameras for its Coolpix S-series.

First up is the Nikon S6500 which has a 16MP back illuminated CMOS sensor, Wi-Fi technology built-in for easy sharing of images via a smartphone and a 12x zoom lens with an equivalent focal length range of 25-300mm.

The S6500 also has five new Glamour Retouch effects, including Brighten Faces, which brightens skin tones, and Whiten Teeth, which makes teeth appear whiter.

In addition, the S6500 lens has Nikon's VR system to help reduce the impact of vibration that can blur images captured at telephoto focal lengths.

Nikon has also given the S6500 its Smile Timer with Continuous mode in which the camera captures up to five images continuously and saves them all, as well as Best Shot Selector Mode (BSS), which captures up to five images continuously and saves the one that best captures the smile.

Like the S2700, the S6500 camera has Target Finding AF mode, in which the camera attempts to focus automatically on the most suitable subject just by pointing the camera at it. There's also a Scene Auto Selector, that automatically sets the optimal scene mode, and Face Priority AF that automatically detects and focuses on human faces.

Full HD movie recording with stereo sound is also possible with the S6500 along with a movie recording pause function. The latter enables multiple clips to be recorded intermittently and combined automatically into a single file for one continuous movie. Users can also edit movies to trim selected scenes from the footage.

Aimed at first time camera owners, the Nikon S2700 has Nikon's Scene Auto Selector mode in which the camera assess the subject and automatically selects the optimal scene mode from a choice of six including Portrait, Night portrait, Landscape, Night landscape, Backlighting , Close-up.

In addition, the S2700's Special Effects menu allows users to apply colour and tone adjustments prior to shooting. Meanwhile the Filter Effects allow post-capture edits without the need for a computer.

This camera also has a 6x zoom lens with a focal length range equivalent to 26-156mm in 35mm terms.

Like the S6500, the S2700 has Target Finding AF and Motion Detection that automatically increases the shutter speed if camera-shake or subject movement is detected.

The price and availability dates of the Nikon S2700 and Nikon S6500 have yet to be announced.

Toshiba preps 20MP, backside-lit sensor for point-and-shoot cameras

Toshiba preps 20megapixel, backsidelit CMOS sensor for pointandshoot cameras

When smartphones are encroaching on compact cameras' turf, how does a company try to stay relevant making sensors for those cameras? By upping the resolution, of course. Toshiba has given a peek at the TCM5115CL, a 1/2.3-inch, backside-illuminated CMOS sensor that hits 20 megapixels -- a big jump from the 16-megapixel sensors in many point-and-shoots and some smartphones. To combat the noise and sensitivity problems that usually come with a denser design, the electronics giant is using pixels that can absorb 15 percent more of a charge, and therefore more light. Toshiba has primed the sensor for high-speed shooting and video as well, with the potential for 1080p video at 60FPS and 30FPS burst shooting at full resolution, provided the processor can keep up. We're not bracing ourselves for an imminent renaissance among dedicated cameras, however. Mass production doesn't start until August, which suggests we're unlikely to have 20-megapixel shooters in our pockets during summer vacation.
