Wikipad in miniature: 7-inch gaming tablet to debut in spring for $249, 10.1-inch sees further delay

Wikipad in miniature 7inch gaming tablet to debut in spring for $249, 101inch sees further delay

When a company delays a product for "minor refinement," we typically expect to see small changes that contribute to a stronger overall product. That wasn't Wikipad's approach -- when it took its namesake gaming tablet into the lab for "minor" tweaks, it took a few inches off its screen size. The Wikipad is now a 7-inch tablet, slated to launch in spring for $249. It's smaller, the company says, but no less powerful -- it's keeping the Tegra 3 GPU the original build promised, not to mention 1GB of DDR3 RAM, 16GB of Flash memory, a 2-megapixel front facing camera and a 1,280 x 800 resolution display.

Wikipad's President of sales, Fraser Townley, told us the gamepad design hasn't changed much either. "We took the pinball wizard approach," he said. "We made everybody in the room shut their eyes, and try the controllers. It's not about the look, it's about the feel. Once we got the feel right, then we could worry about the look. That's how the ten inch was born, and that's how the seven inch stayed the same." The attachment boasts new buttons (now labeled a, b, x and y) with a chrome finish, but seems otherwise unchanged. Wikipad is mum on specific availability, but we're told we can expect to hear more after Chinese New Year. As the 10.1-inch original design? It's still coming, but Townley couldn't it narrow it down further than "before Christmas." Read on for Wikipad's official press announcement, or click here to find out how the tablet was cut down to size.

Nikon Coolpix S9500, S9400 and S5200 point-and-shoots debut at CP+ (hands-on video)

Nikon Coolpix S9500, S9400 and S5200 pointandshoots debut at CP handson video

Ready to check out some more point-and-shoots? That's great news! We've got a few more to share. The first two, the Coolpix S9500 and S9400, are nearly identical, save for a few key features. Appearance-wise, it's difficult to distinguish between the two, especially when they're powered off. Once you flip them on, however, you'll probably notice the S9500's whopping 22x zoom lens, compared to an 18x optic on the S9400. Both include 18.1-megapixel CMOS sensors and very crisp 3-inch OLED displays, while the higher-end S9500 ($350), which is likely to be the only US-bound model, adds built-in WiFi and GPS. Not to be overlooked, the S5200 includes a 16-megapixel CMOS sensor, a 3-inch VGA LCD, 6x optical zoom lens and WiFi for $180.

We caught up with all three compacts at Nikon's CP+ booth this week, and we were quite impressed with the S9500 in particular. Despite the 22x zoom lens, the camera was very thin and light -- it should be able to tuck into a pocket just fine. It included a premium finish, just like its slightly less capable sibling, the S9400, and performed very well during our hands-on. Both of these shooters have sharp OLED displays, which really looked fantastic, along with dedicated mode dials, though we were disappointed to see that Nikon omitted manual shooting options, in favor of some scene presets. The S5200, which was on display in red and blue, had a similar feel and finish, though it was quite a bit more compact, and lacked the OLED screen and mode dial. All of these models are set to ship later this month, but if you're eager to learn more, you can check 'em out in our hands-on after the break.Nikon S9500, S9400, S5200 and L28 hands-on

Samsung renames Galaxy Premier as Galaxy Pop for its multi-colored Korean debut

Image

Premier League, Premier Cru, Premier Inn, all names which exude class and distinction, but presumably have little traction in Samsung's home of Korea. It's there that the company has decided to re-brand the Galaxy Premier as the Galaxy Pop, marketing the smartphone in a variety of kid-friendly colors like gray and orange. Samsung's also dialing the CPU down from 1.4GHz, compared to the 1.5GHz chip we saw in the international version -- but otherwise remains the same handset we've already seen. It's priced at 700,000 won (around $645) and comes with a free flip cover thrown in.

Sony Xperia Z 'Yuga' and ZL 'Odin' make a press shot debut on New Year's Day

Are you ready to welcome in 2013? It's sure to be another hot year for handsets, and if this pair of leaked Xperia smartphones is any indication, Sony is likely to be off to a solid start come CES. The svelte Xperia Z "Yuga" and slightly sleeker ZL "Odin" have made a premature debut on the Japanese tech giant's site, with a pair of straight-on press shots appearing overnight. The Xperia Z shot appears to be in line with earlier leaks, while the ZL is shaping up to be a slightly more compact variant, potentially squeezing identical hardware into a smaller shell. Both devices are rumored to include 5-inch 1080p LCDs, quad-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro processors with 2 gigs of RAM and Adreno 320 graphics, along with a 13-megapixel Exmor RS sensor -- oddly, the ZL's camera appears to be positioned on the bottom. Sony has yet to confirm either device's specifications, but with CES just around the corner, we don't have long to wait for either device to become official.

iOS 6 upgrades soar 29% following debut of Google Maps app

According to data furnished by MoPub and mulled over by TechCrunch, the number of iPhone users running iOS 6 jumped by 29 percent between December 11 and December 15. MoPub tracks over one billion ad impressions daily across many carriers and apps.

So, why was there a seemingly inexplicable boost in iOS 6 adoption over the weekend? Some believe iOS 6's accelerated uptake is the direct result of Google Maps, an app which made a December 12 debut on Apple's App Store.

Perhaps more incidental than coincidental, the day Google Maps was released, MoPub shows a six percent bump for users with iOS 6 devices. By Friday, that was gain was doubled. On Saturday, iOS 6 users had jumped a remarkable 17 percent.

To the chagrin of some iPhone owners, Apple swapped its well-liked Maps app out for its own, in-house creation in iOS 6. Apple's own mapping software was far from perfect though, eliciting a great deal of criticism for its quirky behavior, occasional inaccuracy and the absence of a Street View-like feature. Customer complaints even prompted Apple CEO Tim Cook to personally apologize, promising that their app would improve with future updates.

MoPub's data may support a narrative where some iOS 5 users refused to upgrade to iOS 6, afraid to lose their native, Google-powered Maps app. Of course, there may very well be another explanation, but after 10 million downloads in just two days, the incredible public interest in Google Maps's iOS app makes it a potentially powerful motivator for anyone waiting to upgrade.
