Purdue University's ReadingMate makes the classic reading-running combo a little easier

Purdue University's ReadingMate makes the classic reading-running combo a little easier

Universities aren't just places for students to cut classes and enjoy themselves before eventually embarking on careers. They are also places where problems get solved, like the one facing runners who find it hard to read on the jog. That bane is the focus of a group of researchers at Purdue University, who are working on a system called ReadingMate, which moves text on a display in reaction to the bobbing head of a runner to stabilize what's being seen. The screen is sent information from a pair of infrared LED-equipped glasses, but it's not as simple as shifting text in time with head movement -- your eyes are performing corrections of their own, so the words dance slightly out of sync with your noggin to take this into account. It's performed well in testing, and could have applications beyond the gym, such as in heavy machinery and aircraft, where vibration can hamper reading ability in important situations. Those uses make the most sense -- we don't often find ourselves eager to attack that next Twilight chapter during a near-death treadmill experience.

Microsoft makes Bing image search more social with one-click sharing to Pinterest

Microsoft makes Bing image search more social with oneclick sharing to Pinterest

Companies know how important it is to make their products as friendly as can be with third-party social websites, and Microsoft, for one, has done a pretty fantastic job at making sure the team behind Bing's doing exactly that. To wit, the Surface maker is, as of today, also starting to cater to the Pinterest crowd, announcing that it's now allowing users of the recently redesigned site to share Bing image search findings via a simple click -- assuming you're logged in, naturally. The new sharing feature might seem like a rather minor one on paper, but for avid Pinners, it'll certainly come in handy as they can keep their precious boards stocked up with a little less effort. And, well, you know what that means: more cats.

BlackBerry makes $94 million on revenue of $2.7 billion, ships 1 million BB10 devices in 2013 Q4

Image

This isn't quite the BlackBerry earnings story you're waiting for -- after all, the US figures covering the success (or otherwise) of the Z10 won't arrive until the next quarter. Instead, we're looking at the company's results from the end of the fiscal year to March 2nd, which shows that the smartphone maker made $94 million in GAAP income on revenues of $2.7 billion -- in contrast with the $125 million net loss it made in the same quarter last year. More importantly, however, it shipped out almost one million BlackBerry 10 devices during the three weeks of the quarter that they were available. In addition, it managed to push five million of its older smartphones and 370,000 PlayBook tablets out of the door, but saw user numbers fall from 79 million last quarter to 76 million now.

As revenue has remained relatively flat, the surge in profits can only be attributed to Thorstein Heins' aggressive cost-cutting measures, with the CEO remarking that the "numerous changes" he has implemented at the company have "resulted in [BlackBerry] returning to profitability." At the same time, Mike Lazaridis has announced that he'll retire from his position as vice-chair and director of the outfit he founded the better part of three decades ago. He'll exit the business on May 1st so that he can concentrate on his new enterprise, Quantum Valley Investments.

Update: During the conference call, Thorsten Heins has revealed that around two-thirds or three-quarters of the one million BB10 devices shipped have been sold.

Internet Explorer 11 user agent makes browser look like Firefox, thumbs nose at legacy CSS hacks

Early build of Internet Explorer 11 tells people it's 'like Firefox', enjoys the look on their faces

Subtlety can't always avert controversy. That leaked build of Windows Blue is a case in point: it suggests a relatively incremental update to Windows 8, yet some of its revelations are already causing quite a stir. Neowin now reports that Internet Explorer 11, as contained within the leaked build, identifies itself to host websites as "Mozilla... like Gecko." Confusing, right? Perhaps, but it's not really as underhand as it sounds, as you can see from the full line of code in the picture above.

The program still identifies itself (in brackets) as IE 11, but it forgoes Microsoft's older identifier ("MSIE") and simply describes itself as being a browser that renders HTML in a similar way to Firefox's Gecko layout engine. Neowin speculates that the reason for this could be to start afresh: by confusing host websites with a new identifier, IE 11 might avoid having legacy CSS code thrown at it, dating back to the bad old days when web designers had to give Internet Explorer special treatment. It's also been suggested that this could cause problems for business apps that genuinely rely on legacy CSS code -- although it's worth remembering that we're not looking at a final release here, and none of us (ahem) are even meant to be using it.

Samsung Galaxy S II Plus makes a random appearance at CeBIT 2013, we go hands-on

As ubiquitous as Samsung's Galaxy S II is, we imagined that its influence would wane in the face of the S III and whatever we see in a week's time. The Korean behemoth has other ideas, once again refreshing the former flagship to ensure it'll remain on store shelves as an increasingly lower-end option. Inside you've got a 1.2GHz dual-core Broadcom CPU, 1GB RAM and Android 4.1.2 (Jelly Bean). There's also a 4.3-inch WVGA (800 x 480) display, 8-megapixel rear-facing camera and a 2-megapixel lens up top, as well as GSM and HSPA+ support. How does it compare to the original? Well, it fel a lot more responsive and snappy than when we handled the Galaxy S II last, but part of that is likely due to the new Android Jelly Bean OS' buttery-smooth scrolling. Otherwise, it handled and behaved much like Samsung's aging 'droid hit. The case has now been sanded-down to reflect the company's more natural, Galaxy S III-based design cues, so if you fancy a short game of spot the difference, you can check out the gallery. Criterion cancels your weekend plans, makes its Hulu collection available for free

Followers of the Criterion Collection on Twitter or Facebook have no doubt already dove in, but those that haven't yet heard may want to direct their attention to the Hulu page featured at the source link. There you'll find hundreds of Criterion titles ready for streaming, all of which have been made available for free this weekend (for those that have access to Hulu, that is). It doesn't include all of the films Criterion has released on DVD and Blu-ray, but it's an impressive selection, including many well-known classics and more obscure gems alike; there's even some that Criterion hasn't yet released on physical media.

If you're looking for some science fiction to get started (this is Engadget, after all), we'd recommend an art house sci-fi double feature of Andrei Tarkovsky's Solaris and Rainer Werner Fassbinder's World on a Wire -- or Chris Marker's La Jetée, the inspiration for Terry Gilliam's 12 Monkeys, if you'd prefer something a bit shorter.

Foursquare for Android now makes it easier to find friends, places nearby

Foursquare for Android now makes it easier to find friends, places nearby

It's safe to say the Android folk account for a pretty good chunk of Foursquare's hefty user base, so it's only logical for the social firm to often bring more and more new features to the highly-rated app. As such, today Foursquare announced it has added a few additional tidbits to its Android offering, including a couple which are bound to make it simpler for users of the service to find nearby spots and friends via the application's main map. What's more, Foursquare's moved the "To-Do List" feature over to the app's left drawer for easier access, while the essential "Check In" button also has a new home on that same side but toward the bottom corner. It's worth noting that despite the latest version being live right now, Foursquare says these changes will be rolling out "over the next few weeks" -- in other words, fret not if you're not seeing the novelties show up just yet, as they're sure to be coming very soon.

UPS takes 100 EVs on the road in California, makes delivering packages eco-friendlier

UPS to Rollout Fleet of Electric Vehicles in California

Marks One of the Single Largest Deployments of Zero Emission Vehicles in the World

SACRAMENTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--UPS (NYSE:UPS) today announced the deployment of 100 fully electric commercial vehicles that will be delivering packages around the state. Today's announcement will help implement Governor Jerry Brown's Executive Order to achieve widespread deployment of zero emission vehicles throughout California.

"We currently operate more than 2,500 alternative fuel vehicles worldwide with a variety of hybrid, electric and natural gas technologies, making UPS the leader in logistics sustainability"
"These all-electric vehicles remind us that California continues to be a dynamic center of innovation," said Governor Brown. "These trucks were built here, they'll be driven here and they're already changing the way business is done here – cutting emissions and eliminating the need for tanker trucks worth of fossil fuels."

These UPS electric trucks will reduce the consumption of conventional motor fuel by approximately 126,000 gallons per year. Additional benefits include reduction of carbon emissions and noise. The vehicles have a range of up to 75 miles and primarily will deliver packages to customers in Sacramento, San Bernardino, Ceres, Fresno and Bakersfield.

"We currently operate more than 2,500 alternative fuel vehicles worldwide with a variety of hybrid, electric and natural gas technologies, making UPS the leader in logistics sustainability," said Myron Gray, president of U.S. operations for UPS. "We use our technology and logistics expertise to reduce emissions around the world and help test new automotive technologies."

The partners responsible for making this project a success include the Governor's Office of Business and Economic Development, California Air Resources Board, California Energy Commission, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, South Coast Air Quality Management District, San Joaquin Air Pollution Control District and Sacramento Air Quality Management District.

"EPA's funding of these electric delivery trucks highlights our commitment to the rapid deployment of electric vehicles as a means of cleaning the air, creating jobs and spurring innovation," said Jared Blumenfeld, EPA's Regional Administrator for the Pacific Southwest. "California's communities will benefit from both the local manufacturing of these UPS electric trucks and from the resulting elimination of harmful diesel emissions."

The vehicles were manufactured in Stockton, California by Electric Vehicles International (EVI). The purchase of these vehicles from EVI is also providing new jobs and revenue to the state, as well as creating vehicles that will improve air quality.

Samsung Galaxy Note II gets pretty in pink, makes Hello Kitty proud

Samsung Galaxy Note II gets pretty in pink, makes Hello Kitty proud

To say that we've covered many, many rosey devices around here still wouldn't do the statement justice, so don't mind our slight excitement after seeing the Galaxy Note II show up wearing a very pink outfit on Samsung's Taiwanese site. Clearly, the phone tablet slab looks to follow in the footsteps of its other galactic siblings, the OG Note and GS3, and, in the process, looks to give an extra hue option to those who prefer something a little different than the more traditional colors, or even the newer amber brown and ruby wine. Since Samsung hasn't made an official announcement yet, however, availability details are still relatively unknown, so we'll have to wait to see whether or not this light pink Galaxy Note II ever makes it past the Taiwan page and onto others. In the meantime, perhaps you'd like to mosey past the break, where a rather glamorous press shot gallery awaits.Samsung Galaxy Note II in pinkSee all photoswhen.engVia: UnwiredView

Financial Guidance

The following forward-looking statements reflect Amazon.com's expectations as of January 29, 2013. Our results are inherently unpredictable and may be materially affected by many factors, such as fluctuations in foreign exchange rates, changes in global economic conditions and consumer spending, world events, the rate of growth of the Internet and online commerce and the various factors detailed below.

First Quarter 2013 Guidance

-- Net sales are expected to be between $15.0 billion and $16.6 billion, or to grow between 14% and 26% compared with first quarter 2012.

-- Operating income (loss) is expected to be between $(285) million and $65 million, compared to $192 million in the prior year period.

-- This guidance includes approximately $285 million for stock-based compensation and amortization of intangible assets, and it assumes, among other things, that no additional business acquisitions or investments are concluded and that there are no further revisions to stock-based compensation estimates.

A conference call will be webcast live today at 2 p.m. PT/5 p.m. ET, and will be available for at least three months at www.amazon.com/ir . This call will contain forward-looking statements and other material information regarding the Company's financial and operating results.

These forward-looking statements are inherently difficult to predict. Actual results could differ materially for a variety of reasons, including, in addition to the factors discussed above, the amount that Amazon.com invests in new business opportunities and the timing of those investments, the mix of products sold to customers, the mix of net sales derived from products as compared with services, the extent to which we owe income taxes, competition, management of growth, potential fluctuations in operating results, international growth and expansion, the outcomes of legal proceedings and claims, fulfillment and data center optimization, risks of inventory management, seasonality, the degree to which the Company enters into, maintains and develops commercial agreements, acquisitions and strategic transactions, and risks of fulfillment throughput and productivity. Other risks and uncertainties include, among others, risks related to new products, services and technologies, system interruptions, government regulation and taxation, payments and fraud. In addition, the current global economic climate amplifies many of these risks. More information about factors that potentially could affect Amazon.com's financial results is included in Amazon.com's filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission ("SEC"), including its most recent Annual Report on Form 10-K and subsequent filings.

Our investor relations website is www.amazon.com/ir and we encourage investors to use it as a way of easily finding information about us. We promptly make available on this website, free of charge, the reports that we file or furnish with the SEC, corporate governance information (including our Code of Business Conduct and Ethics), and select press releases and social media postings.

Alcatel One Touch Evo 7 makes FCC pitstop, still runs Ice Cream Sandwich

Alcatel One Touch EVO 7 makes FCC pitstop, still runs Ice Cream Sandwich

If it's ICS, you can be sure it ain't fresh. And Alcatel seems to know that, but it's offering a base version of its non-HD One Touch Evo 7 tablet that runs that so very 2011 Android OS anyway. Yes, this is the very same 7-inch "modular" slate we saw at this past CES, except now it's made an appearance at the FCC, indicating market availability on the horizon. Just in case you need a refresher, Alcatel's outfitted the tab with a WSVGA (1,024 x 600) display, single-core 1GHz Rockchip CPU buffered by 1GB RAM and 4GB of internal storage -- nothing to get excited about, really. All the goods are here on display, from test setup shots to its user manual. So, feel free to peruse the source below for a glimpse at the official docs.

CES 2013: Delphi's new plug-in OBD2 device makes your car remote-controlled

Delphi's new plug-in OBD2 device makes your car remote-controlledDoesn't look like much, but that little black box turns your car into a robot. Kinda

Fancy adding remote control features and monitoring to your car? Then you want the new Delphi Connected Car. It's a simple plug-in device that enables a wide range of remote features including GPS tracking and remote unlocking via a smartphone app.

Car tech will be one of the big themes at CES 2013 and Delphi's getting in on the action with the announcement of this clever little gadget. The basics involve a wireless device that plugs into the OBD2 port, which you'll find on any car manufactured after 1996.

In that sense, it's a little like the xTool iOBD2. But Delphi's Connected Car device takes things further with both Bluetooth and cellular connectivity. The final piece of the puzzle is a GPS chipset.

Put them all together and you have a device that can both access OBD2 functions and track a car remotely. So what exactly does this allow you to do?

Your mileage will vary depending on make and model and, indeed, age of your car. The newer the car, the more automated features you'll have access to.

At the very least, picking up diagnostics and engine faults remotely is on the menu. The GPS function also means you'll be able to track your car's speed and location.

Worried parents, for instance, can set the device to alert them if a car being driven over a certain speed or goes beyond predetermined geographic boundaries.

With more recent vehicles a whole range of options open out. Pretty much any function of the latest smart keyfobs can be emulated, such as locking and unlocking or even starting the car.

For now it's only been announced for the US on the Verizon network in CDMA network format. But if it's a sales success, no doubt it will pop up in more formats and hopefully more countries too.

Huawei Ascend D2 makes a brief pre-CES appearance

Android Central

Android Central @ CES

CES is right around the corner, and one of the devices Huawei will be showing off will be the Ascend D2, which was announced a few weeks ago. A batch of pictures have bubbled up giving us a closer look at the otherwise camera-shy D2. We all remember its predecessor, the dickwad D Quad, and it's battery-boosted bro, the D Quad XL, but the D2 stands to be a significant step up from both of them. The source of the latest batch of pictures of the device confirms it will have an HD-grade (1080p?) 5-inch display, a quad-core 1.5 GHz processor, 13 megapixel camera, run Android 4.1, and have a big honkin' 3,000 mAh battery.

It's great to see Huawei continuing to push the higher-end market and get those devices into Europe and the U.S. - after all, competition is good, especially on price point. We may also see a new 6.1-inch tablet from Huawei at CES, which will be interesting to try out, to say the least.

Any of y'all happy Huawei device owners? Those that aren't, would you consider switching away from one of the bigger manufacturers if you could save a buck on your next device?

Canon shutters the EOS 5D Mark II, makes Mark III man of the house

Canon shutters the EOS 5D Mark II, wheel continues to turn

Given the advent of the EOS 5D Mark III, it's hardly a surprise to see that the Mark II has been quietly moved to Canon's retired list. The full-frame DSLR was famous for its HD video prowess and was quickly adopted by Hollywood, where it was used to film an entire episode of House back in 2010. While the spirit of the 5D lives on in the latest revision, the old dog most definitely deserves a toast 'round the fire.

Mac Gems: Miro Video Converter makes it easy to convert video

If you work with video, chances are you occasionally need to convert video files from one format to another. For instance, if you’ve downloaded videos from YouTube or other online video services, that content may be in Flash or Windows Media formats, which aren’t viewable on any iOS device. Or if you update web content, you may have a number of movies in H.264 format that simply won’t play in Google’s Chrome browser, which doesn’t support H.264.

There are many tools available for converting video between formats, but the one I often turn to is the free Miro Video Converter (3.5-mouse rating). While its interface isn’t what you would call Mac-standard, the program does a great job converting videos. It supports a huge number of video formats, including some oddball ones, and it can output video optimized for iOS devices, as well as for a slew of Android devices including the Kindle Fire.

When you launch Miro Video Converter, you’re greeted with a large, dark, and basically empty interface. However, it’s pretty obvious what needs to be done, thanks to explanatory text that states, “Drag videos here or Choose Files.” To convert one or more video files, drag them into the window, or click the Choose Files link to use a standard OS X file-navigation dialog box to select them.

In this example, I’m converting Flash videos for viewing on an iPhone 5.

Once you’re added at least one video, the buttons at the bottom of the interface become active. Choose your output format by clicking one of these buttons (Apple, Android, Other, or Format) and choosing from the options in the resulting pop-up menu. Miro Video Converter automatically selects the resulting video’s size, quality, and codec settings based on the chosen platform or device.

But what are those settings? This is where, if you’re one of those people who likes to get your hands dirty with every detail, you’ll find your first disappointment with Miro: You can’t see (or control) those settings. After much digging on the web, I did find a table listing the resolution and command line equivalents for each output setting—but you still can’t change those settings within Miro Video Converter. The settings (gear) icon on the right side of the window brings up the only controls you have over the conversion process—and they are few. (Depending on what output format you’ve chosen, you may see different options than shown in the screenshot here.)

The limited settings available for video being converted for an iPhone 5.

As far as settings go, this is it for Miro Video Converter; the program doesn’t even have a Preferences screen. Notice, too, the Show Output Folder link, which opens the folder (~/Movies/Miro Video Converter) to which Miro Video Converter saves all converted video—as with conversion settings, you have no control over where this folder is located.

Once you’ve selected your output format, just click the big, green "Convert" button that appears, and Miro Video Converter converts all queued videos. When it’s done—as with all video-conversion utilities, the process can take a while, especially for lengthy videos—you’ll find the converted files in the expected location, with your source files untouched.

It may seem like Miro Video Converter presents a number of issues: a lack of preferences, no way to see or change the conversion settings, and no option for setting the output destination. But it’s these same “issues” that make the program incredibly easy to use: Drag and drop a number of videos, choose your device type, click the Convert button, then open your Movies folder to see the converted videos. It really doesn’t get much easier. Out of hundreds of videos I've converted using Miro Video Converter, only two turned out bad, and those were files I converted to Ogg format.

If you need total control over your video conversion, Miro Video Converter isn’t the tool for you. But if you’re looking for a simple tool for converting video between formats, Miro Video Converter is worth a look. It’s amazingly easy to use, and you can’t beat the price.

Samsung Galaxy Note 7.0 makes another benchmarking appearance

Samsung Galaxy Note 7.0 makes another benchmarking appearanceS-Pen as standard, probably

The likelihood of us seeing the Samsung Galaxy Note 7.0 has grown a little stronger as another benchmark for the anticipated device crops up online.

Earlier this month we saw a benchmark result for a device carrying the moniker GT-N5100, and now the GLBenchmark site has apparently witnessed the same tablet.

Running Android 4.1.2, so not quite the latest version of Jelly Bean, the supposedly Samsung-made tablet sports the same model number as the Nenamark benchmark a few weeks ago.

There's precious little information to gain from the latest benchmark, with the screen resolution the only other clue we have on the device, coming in at 1280 x 800 – which is different from the Nenamark result which had a 1280 x 720 resolution.

It comes as no surprise that Samsung could be planning a new 7-inch tablet after the rather muted effort of the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 was overshadowed by the likes of the Amazon Kindle Fire HD, Nook HD and Google Nexus 7.

Samsung is staying quiet on the topic, as it does for any rumours surrounding future devices, but we'll be having a good root around at CES 2013 and MWC 2013 to see what we can find out.
