Tokyo court fines Google for not censoring defamatory instant search results

Image

Remember the sad tale of the Japanese man that Google's Instant Search forced out of a job? Entering his name into the search bar, and Google's auto-complete algorithm tacked on accusations of nefarious acts that he was allegedly responsible for -- causing his employers to hand him his pink slip. Afterward, John Doe-san took Google to court, but Mountain View refused to intervene. That's why the Tokyo District Court has fined Google 300,000 yen ($3,068) for the mental distress, which will be paid to the unnamed individual in question.

CERN release preliminary results: particle looking 'more and more like a Higgs boson'

CERN's latest update to its elementary particle project is that the new particle that it was able to pick up is behaving "more and more like a Higgs boson." The team isn't being particularly specific here, as its not certain just yet whether it's detected a 'standard model' particle or the lightest of several possible bosons predicted in other spin-off theories. Researchers are referencing the interactions of the particle (particularly its spin, or lack off) as the main reason why they reckon they're dealing with a genuine Higgs boson and work will now focus on exactly what kind of boson they've managed to snag.

Google Now Removing Over 50 Million Pirate Search Results Per Year

Pirate

Hollywood has been playing whack-a-mole with pirates for as long as we can remember, but the war continues to rage on with numbers that simply defy explanation. According to Google’s transparency report, 51,395,353 links to infringing websites were removed from the indexer this year, and it is continuing to grow at an exponential rate. Last week alone Google received a mind boggling 3,502,345 take down requests. This represents a 15x increase over what they received in January.

According to the report, the RIAA is by far the most active sender , but just about every major copyright holder shows up somewhere on the list. Interestingly enough however, the notorious Pirate Bay had just over half a million links removed, putting them in 16th place. Considering how publically they’ve been pursued over the last several years, this is a bit surprising.

Google also expressed concerns with the increasing number of false positives, a problem which turns out to be an unavoidable side effect of this automated shotgun approach to DMCA take-down requests.

“As policymakers evaluate how effective copyright laws are, they need to consider the collateral impact copyright regulation has on the flow of information online,” Google’s Legal Director Fred Von Lohmann said earlier this month.

The MPAA defended itself by using the numbers to remind the public just how much pirated content they have to deal with online.

“There is a staggering amount of copyright infringement taking place every day online and much of it is facilitated by Google, as their own data shows,” the MPAA noted a few weeks ago. “We couldn’t agree more with Google that this data shows that our current system is not working – for creators, or for Google. But we can’t lose sight of the fact that it also confirms the important role that Google has to play in helping curb the theft of creative works while protecting an Internet that works for everyone,” the Hollywood group added.

Just in case you’re curious, The Verge and Techradar have also compiled lists of the most pirated TV Shows and Movies for 2012.

Google's search results let you take a tour inside restaurants

Google's search results let you take a tour inside restaurantsLike what you see?

Thinking of trying that new Italian around the corner? Well you might be able to have a look inside without leaving the house, thanks to Google's Business Photos feature.

The feature was launched back in September as part of Google Maps, but Google has only just brought it to search results. So search for said Italian, and the option to have a look inside will show up alongside it on the results page.

It's not just a quick peek either. It's a full 360-degree panorama, so you can get a real feel for a place before you decide to pay it a visit.

Just click "see inside" next to the business on the search page, and you'll be taken inside for a tour.

The snaps are uploaded by Google's "trusted photographers" rather than the business owners themselves. You can wander around them just like in Google Street View, meaning it's the closest you can get to being in the shop without leaving the house.

Businesses can upload their own snaps instead of using those from Google's approved photographers, but users won't be able to walk around them.

Google has included business in the US, Australia, the UK, New Zealand, France, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Canada.
