Edison2 shows off an updated Very Light Car EV by exposing its unique frame (hands-on)

Edison2 shows off an updated Very Light Car EV by exposing its unique frame handson

We've had a few looks at Edison2's Very Light Car (VLC) project including its gasoline-powered X-Prize winning incarnation, but today's EV looked a bit different. In an event at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, MI, CEO and founder Oliver Kuttner showed off the latest version of the vehicle, this time unskinned -- while referencing similar body-less showcases of the Lamborghini Miura and Volkswagen Beetle -- to show off the innovative suspension that contributes greatly to the car's light weight. The in-wheel suspension units connect to single piece axles that bookend the car's chassis and feature fewer contact points than traditional car suspension designs. Kuttner claims this technique will also feed back into conventional car bodies, opening up more space and taking weight out of future vehicles. Check after the break for more details about what's changed and what's next for Edison2, or dive into the gallery to take a look for yourself.Edison2 VLC at Henry Ford Museum

While downplaying the potential of hydrogen or hybrid power solutions to drive the cars of the near future, Kuttner promoted the VLC as a solution for domestic buyers as well as in markets like India and China. The aluminum-framed vehicle has a price target of about $20,000, and is capable of being powered by either an electric engine or two-stroke gas motor. This new version of the VLC increases the aerodynamic effectiveness seen in previous units while also improving interior space and aesthetics. It's also claimed that the body height can be raised or lowered, enough so that we could see an mini-SUV concept built on the technology. Currently, the restriction in height is due to a lack of larger skinny, low profile tires which will work with its design -- it's currently fitted with the skinniest 17-inch set available. Kuttner stated a 19-inch version recently demonstrated by Bridgestone would find its way onto future concepts once it's available.

Edison2 shows off an updated Very Light Car EV,

We got behind the wheel of the demo unit and found it spacious enough, if as sparsely appointed as one would expect at this stage, and the 6'4" Kuttner similarly had no problem entering and exiting. He says expanding the cabin even further, and improving the backseat is currently in the plans for future revisions, as Edison2 seeks the regulatory approval necessary to get cars like this on the road. In response to a question from the reporters in attendance, he mentioned that while Edison2 will remain a technology company developing new innovations like this, he is "100% certain" it will build cars, possibly to satisfy the safety and regulatory necessities. Despite its unconventional design and fully exposed presentation, what we saw was enough to want to test out its claimed 150mph+ top speed (depending on the engine) as soon as possible.

Edison2 to Unveil New Very Light Car Architecture at The Henry Ford
April 11, 2013
Special Press Conference begins at 2pm inside Henry Ford Museum

(Dearborn, Mich. – April XX, 2013) –Edison2, the winners of the 2010 Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE, will unveil their latest Very Light Car (VLC) architecture on Thursday, April 11, 2013 at The Henry Ford. This special press conference will begin at 2 p.m. next to the organization's original winning VLC on display inside Henry Ford Museum's Driving America exhibit.

Since winning the Automotive X Prize in 2010, Edison2 has been hard at work designing the next VLC. The new VLC prototype utilizes the lessons learned from this prestigious competition while also addressing consumers' needs.

The key to the VLC's remarkable structural, dynamic and aerodynamic effectiveness is its unique modular architecture. The architecture gave birth to the world's most efficient four passenger vehicle, one of which now resides inside Henry Ford Museum's Driving America exhibit. Its core technologies, including patented in-wheel suspension have been applied to the new VLC prototype. The improved, more aerodynamic shape offers better interior space and enhanced aesthetics. Capable of local, low investment manufacture and with applications far beyond Edison2's fabulously efficient streamliners, the new VLC architecture has a promising future in domestic and international markets

"We are proud to unveil our new VLC architecture here at The Henry Ford, directly next to our history making X Prize VLC," Edison2's CEO and founder, Oliver Kuttner remarked. "The auto industry has been refining the same architecture for more than 50 years, and Edison2 has created a new path - a new way of building a car that has many environmental and economic benefits. Much of this relies on Edison2's in-wheel suspension which can be seen on the VLC prototype we will be displaying."

Oliver Kuttner, a Charlottesville, Virginia entrepreneur and lifelong auto enthusiast, founded Edison2 LLC in 2007. He assembled a top-tier team of racing and aerospace engineers, designers and mechanics for the X Prize competition. For Hi-res photos visit the Edison2 website www.edison2.com/for-media/.

Super Bowl XLVII live stream notches 3 million unique viewers, breaks records

CBS has pulled back the curtain on just how many eyeballs were glued to its Super Bowl XLVII coverage, and it claims that its live stream netted 3 million unique viewers, up 43 percent from last year's game. With so many fans watching the action via the internet, CBS managed to whip up almost 10 million live video streams, which is more than a 100% uptick from the previous year. If you're wondering just how that translates into time spent watching the Ravens forge their path to victory, CBS says it broke a record by streaming 114.4 million minutes. According to figures collected by a trio of research groups, the game was the most "most-social event in the history of television," racking up more than 52.5 million mentions of it around the web in a single day -- three times that of 2012's Super Bowl and Grammy Awards. Sure, CBS' online viewership numbers for Super Bowl XLVI are impressive, but they're still eclipsed by the record-breaking 164.1 million viewers who caught the Ravens and 49ers duke it out on television.

Super Bowl XLVII Live Stream Sets Viewership Records

Unique Viewers Reach 3 Million, with 114.4 Million Minutes of Video Streams

Most Social Telecast Ever, According to Monitoring Services

NEW YORK – Feb. 5, 2012 – The CBSSports.com, NFL.com and NFL Mobile from Verizon live stream of Super Bowl XLVII on Sunday set multiple viewership records for a single game sporting event in the United States and also made history as the most social telecast ever, according to data provided by Omniture and third-party monitoring firms.

Online, the CBSSports.com live stream of the matchup between the San Francisco 49ers and the Baltimore Ravens attracted three million unique viewers to the Super Bowl XLVII video player, up 43 percent from Super Bowl XLVI. Viewers generated nearly 10 million live video streams, up more than 100 percent from last year, resulting in a record 114.4 million minutes streamed, which was up 46 percent over last year's game.

Sunday also marked the largest recorded audience in CBSSports.com's history, as viewers streamed the game live, watched Beyonce's half-time performance (the first time a Super Bowl half-time performance has been streamed live online in the U.S.), viewed alternative camera angles, connected with friends and followers socially, and watched broadcast commercials again on-demand.

In addition to viewership numbers, Super Bowl XLVII smashed the record for the most-social event in the history of television, according to third-party research firms BlueFin, SocialGuide and Trendrr. Trendrr tracked more than 52.5 million social comments throughout the day, more than three times the numbers tracked for 2012's Grammy Awards and Super Bowl XLVI, the previous top events.

"Our live stream of Super Bowl XLVII not only set online viewership and social-media records but set the standard for a second-screen sports experience," said Jim Lanzone, president of CBS Interactive. "Our goal was to create an environment that would serve as the perfect complement to CBS Sports' coverage of the game. We're extremely proud of this historic experience."

"This year's record-setting engagement demonstrates that our fans are always looking for more ways to engage with NFL content," said Hans Schroeder, NFL senior vice president of media strategy and development.

CBS Sports' coverage of Super Bowl XLVII (Feb 3: 6:32-8:41 and 9:11-10:47 p.m. ET) was watched in all-or-part (at least six minutes) by a record 164.1 million viewers. Last night's 164.1 million (persons 2+) is the highest number of viewers to ever watch all-or-part of the Super Bowl. The previous high was 2011's 162.9 million for the Green Bay Packers-Pittsburgh Steelers game.

Official stats for Sunday's live stream of XLVII on CBSSports.com and NFL.com:

· Unique Viewers: 3 million

· Total Minutes Streamed: 114.4 million

· Live video streams: 10 million

· Engagement: 38 minutes per-viewer

HTC-made au Infobar A02 launches in Japan, wraps unique Android UI in trippy body

HTC's au Infobar A02

KDDI's funky au Infobar is back! Once again designed by the famed Naoto Fukasawa, this A02 -- co-developed by HTC -- brings the series up to date with Qualcomm's 1.5GHz quad-core APQ8064 (but with just 1GB of RAM), 4.7-inch 720p display, 16GB of storage, microSD slot, 2,100mAh battery, LTE radio (800/1500) and Android 4.1. Better yet, this phone also supports both CDMA2000 800/2100 and WCDMA 850/1900/2100, making it a great global phone. Judging by one of the demo clips after the break, it seems that this Infobar's 8-megapixel main imager (with F2.0 lens) and 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera take advantage of HTC's ImageSense chip for speedy burst shots. Likewise, you'll find Beats Audio built into the system. As per typical Japanese mobile phone, the usual NFC (with Osaifu-Keitai mobile wallet), 1seg TV tuner and infrared are also packed inside the 9.7mm-thick, 147g-heavy waterproof (IPX5 and IPX7) and dustproof (IP5X) body.

We're already fans of the iconic nishikigoi (meaning "brocaded carp") color scheme as pictured above, but what really caught our attention this time are the fluid animations and uniqueness of the "iida UI" 2.0 (iida stands for "innovation," "imagination," "design" and "art") by interactive designer Yugo Nakamura. As you'll see in the video clips after the break, the home screen here shares some similarities with Windows Phone 8's counterpart -- in the way items snap to grid and resize, even though the former is enhanced by plenty of bouncy animation, more colors and funny sounds (designed by Japanese musician Cornelius). Expect this A02 -- which is also available in blue or gray -- to hit the Japanese market in mid-February.
