Pantech Vega Iron brings a 5-inch 'zero bezel' display, where zero equals 2.4mm (update)

Pantech Vega Iron brings 1080p on a 5inch display with indisputably thin bezels

We've got to admit that we saw some rumors about a "zero bezel" Pantech a few days ago, but ignored them because we had no idea what that meant. Now we do, however, as Pantech has made the 5-inch 1080p 720p phone official, under the solid-sounding name of the Vega Iron. The bezels aren't quite zero, but they are small: just 2.4mm across on each side, which -- for reference -- is roughly half the width on an iPhone 5. This results in a viewable-to-total area ratio of 75.5 percent, which Pantech claims is a world beater. Other specs include a quad-core 1.7GHz Snapdragon 600 processor, in-cell LCD display and Gigabit WiFi. We have no idea if Pantech has penciled the United States into the Vega Iron's release schedule, but the company is certainly trying to make an impression in this hemisphere and a phone like this couldn't hurt.

Update: The rumors were right about everything except the resolution, which now looks to be 720p rather than the big ten-eighty. Thanks to commenters who spotted the error.

Uber vows to roll out service where it has 'tacit approval,' with precautions

Uber iOS

If you hadn't gathered, Uber's app-based taxi service isn't always welcome wherever it goes. The company is tired of that fighting just to maintain its business, so it's defining its expansion policies through a new white paper. Deployments will occur in regions where Uber sees "tacit approval" from regulators -- in other words, areas where there hasn't been direct legal action against competing services for at least 30 days. Just in case authorities change their minds, the company plans to go "above and beyond" commercial licensing requirements, including a $2 million insurance policy on trips and more stringent background tests. While Uber would much rather have explicit permission to operate as it sees fit, the strategy could have the firm venturing into territories where competitors with unlicensed drivers have (seemingly) free rein.

Updated: Sony Xperia Z release date: when can you get it and where?

Sony Xperia Z release date: when can you get it and where?Buy it. Buy it now. Oh, wait, you can't.

The new Sony Xperia Z has turned a few heads with a top-end spec list…so how can you go about getting it?

The handset caused something of a stir at CES 2013, mostly because it saw Sony finally releasing a phone that wasn't a couple of generations behind the competition.

This means a massive 5-inch full HD display, which pushes closer to the edge of the screen so you're not left with a comically huge phone dwarfing your hand.

It's also water- and dust-resistant, comes with top-end Bravia tech and offers an impressive camera too – so which networks will be stocking it?

Update: Clove has been in touch and informed us the SIM free price of the phone will be £528 - putting it squarely alongside the low-capacity iPhone 5 and other top-end handsets.

On top of that, we've done some digging and found a couple of Sony Xperia Z release dates for you to chew over:

The effervescent provider tweeted at stupid o'clock in the morning to confirm it would be bringing the handset to market, and it offers the earliest release date too: its 'coming soon' page says it will launch in February.

Oh, it is coming in 'Exclusive Purple'. That may mean it's only landing on O2 in that colour, or it's the actual name of the hue - you know, like Ranging Green or Megalithic Blue.

The numerical network also confirmed it would be stocking the Sony Xperia Z but apart from it 'coming soon', there's not a lot more information floating around.

Let's get these out of the way along with Three: there's very little on offer here info-wise apart from confirming that the handset will be appearing on ol' Big Red in the future – although it has done a blog post outlining some of the specs you'll have read about loads already.

Nothing from this tri-headed behemoth as yet, but we've asked the question and have been promised to be furnished with details as soon as they become available.

Sony Xperia Z

The independent retailer is already open for pre-registration on this top-end phone, but doesn't offer up a price as yet. However, it is betting its boat on a March 1 Sony Xperia Z release date, so you can circle that date in your diaries if you've got nothing else on.

We're going to get a little quote-y on yo' asses now: "Carphone Warehouse, has confirmed that it will be stocking the brand new Sony Xperia Z from launch in February." Saves us from writing that.

The retailer also confirmed that the Z will be available in later February to purchase, so could beat Phones 4U to the punch of actually getting it into the hands of consumers.

We're going to be updating this piece with prices and any more definitive release dates as and when we get them – stay with us during this difficult time.

AKKA Ski Retriever detects where you lost your skiing gear with waterproof Bluetooth tags

AKKA Ski Retriever detects where you lost your skiing gear with waterproof Bluetooth tags

AKKA wants you to find your snowsports gear, minus hours lost digging in the snow. Its Ski Retriever project, being pitched on Kickstarter, pairs a handheld 1-inch OLED display with multiple bluetooth tags, with audio and visual feedback delivered as you get closer to your lost property and visible notification for both distance and direction. The tags can be connected into the base plate of your skis, through a cold-weather adhesive mount, or simply lashed to your equipment through lanyard loops. The creators have even have a list of wants they're hoping to add to the Ski Retriever if they get the necessary funding, including security geo-tagging, and certification to be used in search efforts after an avalanche. Kickstarter preorder customers will pick up a handset and two tags to start with -- the founders are hoping to raise $100,000.

Location Marking Stickers Guarantee People Will Put Your Stuff Back Where It Belongs

This story will display in ...Nov 21, 2012 7:20 PM

Location Marking Stickers Guarantee People Will Put Your Stuff Back Where It BelongsDesigned for neat freaks, the obsessive compulsive, or anyone tired of borrowed gear not returning to where it belongs, these simple location marking stickers serve as the perfect reminder as to where your stuff goes.

At $17 for a pack of 60 they're a little expensive, so thankfully you DIY-minded types can accomplish the same thing with a roll of electrical tape and a pair of scissors. That is, if you can find where the last person who used them left them. [Unwhite via The Awesomer]

Samsung hits Apple where it hurts with processor price hike

Samsung hits Apple where it hurts with processor price hikeKer-ching

Samsung has upped the price of its processors made for Apple by 20 percent, as the Korean firm looks to get one over on its closest rival.

The Wall Street Journal cites a report which quotes a "person familiar with negotiations between the two tech giants", apparently confirming this special price hike for Apple.

The source said: "Samsung Electronics recently asked Apple for a significant price raise in (the mobile processor known as) application processor.

"Apple first disapproved it, but finding no replacement supplier, it accepted the [increase]."

This is set to make Samsung a tidy amount of profit, with estimates suggesting Apple ordered 130 million units last year, and it on course to break 200 million this time around in light of the launch of the iPhone 5, iPad 4 and iPad mini.

Apple will have to pay this inflated price until at least 2014, which is apparently when the contract between the two firms ends.

This price hike will add more salt to the Cupertino wounds after Apple was ordered to publish an apology to Samsung on its website, then pay the Korean firm's court fees after messing the website statement up.
