Huawei Ascend Mate to reach Vodafone UK in July

Huawei's giant-screened Ascend Mate smartphone launching with Vodafone UK

· Super-sized 6.1 inch HD display among largest available

· July release for Ascend Mate across all Vodafone UK channels

London, UK, July 9th, 2013: Huawei, a leading global information and
communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, today announces
its giant-screened Ascend Mate smartphone will launch with Vodafone in
the UK in July.

At 6.1 inches, the Huawei Ascend Mate features one of the very largest
screens of any smartphone in the market. It also boasts fantastic
horsepower, in the form of a 1.5 GHz Hi-Silicon quad-core processor
and an enormous 4050 mAh battery, and elegant design for unrivalled
big-screen entertainment on the go.

Huawei Device UK Product Director James Powell said: "The Ascend Mate
could be tailor made for British consumers. Its huge HD screen is
suitable for all seasons – bright for the summer and sensitive enough
to work with gloves in the depths of winter. As with all Huawei
phones, the Ascend Mate makes breathtaking power, long-lasting battery
life and stunning design more affordable than ever before."

A new screen icon

The Huawei Ascend Mate is big, bold and powerful, built for heavy-duty
entertainment and communications, and yet it is also portable and
elegant. Its front is almost all screen, which ensures you get maximum
screen and viewing pleasure for minimal bulk. It is compact enough to
slip easily into a jacket pocket, and its lightly rubberized back
ensures its fits well in one hand.

The 6.1-inch HD IPS+ LCD screen has a resolution of 1280 x 720 for
crisp vibrant colours in most light conditions. Huawei's Magic Touch
technology even enables you to scroll, type and tap without taking
your gloves off – for when Summer's out. The display also does away
with the need for a stylus; the super sensitive screen picks up every
gesture. The keyboard can be switched from left to right to centre,
for easy one-handed operation.

The Ascend Mate features an 8.0 megapixel auto-focus rear-facing
camera with HDR and 1.0 megapixel HD front-facing camera, giving great
images and video calling. Dual MIC noise reduction technology, Dolby®
sound system and stereo recording give an enhanced audio and visual
experience.

User-focused innovation

The Ascend Mate provides around two days of ordinary usageon a single
charge, by virtue of its large 4050mAh battery and Huawei's Quick
Power Control (QPC) and Automated Discontinuous Reception (ADRX)
power-saving technology. It also has the fastest charging capability
of smartphones in its range, reducing the charge time by over 30 per
cent.

Huawei's easy-to-use Emotion UI runs over the top of the Android 4.1
operating system, enabling you to personalise your Ascend Mate with a
wide range of themes and simplify your homepage with Huawei's Me
Widget, which makes better use of screen real-estate to combine
important information and contacts in a single customizable widget.

Huawei Ascend G710 reportedly spied touting a 5-inch, 720p screen

Huawei Ascend G710 reportedly spied, may tout a 5inch, 720p screen

Just because Huawei has already launched a small torrent of smartphones two months into 2013 doesn't mean the company is taking a vacation anytime soon. Evleaks has spotted what's purported to be the Ascend G710, a not-quite-high-end smartphone that would sit just below the Ascend D2. While it would preserve the 5-inch screen and 1.5GHz quad-core processor, it would dip to a 720p resolution. There's hints that it may be more a step sideways, however, through some less performance-minded changes: the G710 would have a premium-looking metal (or metal-effect) back, free up screen real estate with capacitive navigation buttons and talk to both CDMA and GSM networks. When the camera, storage and the all-important launch plans are still missing, though, there's a long way to go before we know where this latest Ascend might sit in Huawei's catalog.

Huawei Ascend P2 flaunts svelte profile in more leaked shots

Huawei Ascend P2 flaunts svelte profile in more leaked shots

As MWC draws near, it's not surprising to see an increase in leaks, and today we bring you a few more pictures of Huawei's Ascend P2, which recently made a cameo in some unofficial product shots. The 4.7-inch full HD handset is expected to feature Android 4.1.2, a quad-core 1.8 GHz processor (developed in house), 2GB of RAM, 8GB of built-in storage (plus microSD), a 13MP shooter and a 2200mAh battery. Slotting below the 5-inch Ascend D2 and 6.1-inch Ascend Mate we saw at CES, the Ascend P2 is rumored to be less than 6.45mm thick with Nexus 4-like on-screen buttons. Of course, since the FCC is unlikely to certify such a svelte device, it's likely we'll see a tweaked version of this phone if it ever makes it to the US -- then again, it looks thicker to us in the pictures. Pricing is supposedly targeting the 3,000 Yuan mark ($480), unsubsidized. Guess we'll find out more in Barcelona, right? Hit the break for a couple more images.

Huawei Ascend Mate, Huawei Ascend W1 and Huawei Ascend D2 caught on film before CES 2013

A new leaked press render shows off the Huawei Ascend Mate before the 6.1 inch Android flavored device heads to Las Vegas for CES 2013. Last week, Huawei Chairman Richard Yu surprised a whole Huawei Store full of shoppers by showing off the device, which he just happened to have with him. There is some disturbing news about the phone, which is the speculation that the screen will have 720p resolution. Consider that a 1080p resolution on a 5 inch screen like the HTC DROID DNA works out to a spectacular 441ppi pixel density. The 720p screen on the Samsung Galaxy S III results in a 306ppi pixel density, but that is for a 4.8 inch screen. Perhaps a higher resolution screen would have sent the price of the phone skyrocketing, but if this is true, it cannot be good news for those who are getting spoiled by the new wave of smartphones with a pixel density well above Retina display territory. One piece of potentially good news is the rumor that the battery on the phone weighs in at 3800mAh.. For those who like to compare, the cell on the Samsung GALAXY Note II is 3100mAh.

Another Android phone that the Chinese based manufacturer has packed for the trip to Vegas is the Huawei Ascend D2. With a 5inch, 1080p screen, this device has the resolution that the Ascend Mate should have had. A quad-core 1.5GHz processor is under the hood and there is a 13MP camera on back. Android 4.1 should be installed out of the box, and ready to go.

Lastly, there is the Huawei Ascend W1, a Windows Phone 8 model with a 4 inch display, a dual-core 1.2GHz processor, and a 2000mAh battery. The device will be available in four colors.

6.1-inch 1080p Huawei Ascend Mate smiles for the camera again

We’ve already seen pictures of the upcoming monster phone that is the Huawei Ascend Mate, equipped with a gigantic 6.1-inch 1080p display, but how about even more detailed images of the device?

Sure, those will leave little to the imagination come CES in just about a week, but we’d still like to know about what this upcoming supersized phablet will look like.

First, you’d notice the humongous display that puts the Huawei Ascend Mate in a territory right in between a tablet and a smartphone. It’s hard to tell how practical this form factor is when we have not used one yet, so we’d rather leave our comments on that for later on.

What we can comment on is the specs and those include a 1.8GHz HiSilicon K3V3 quad-core processor, an impressive 4,000mAh battery, all packed in a 9.9mm body with a slight convex curve on the back.

Additionally, you get 2GB of RAM, and a 13-megapixel rear camera, all making this look like a very capable computer that you can put in your pocket (if you have larger pockets, that is).

Take a look at the pictures below, this will probably be one of the more exciting announcements at CES 2013, and make sure to mark January 7th and 8th on your calendars - we’ll be at the showroom floor bringing you all the latest gadgets right around then.

Huawei Ascend Mate leaks again, comparing its 6.1 inch screen to stable mate Huawei Ascend D2

Last weekend, we showed you the excitement that took over a Huawei store in Guangzhou, China when company chairman Richard Yu pulled out the Huawei Ascend Mate to show off the device. Quickly, a throng surrounded the executive, all dying to get a peek at the 6.1 inch handset prior to its appearance at next month's CES 2013 in Las Vegas. The majority of us were not lucky enough to have been in the Huawei store at the right time to see the Huawei Ascend Mate in person. But we can take a look at the device in a series of new pictures that show the Ascend Mate next to another new Huawei model, the Huawei Ascend D2.

The specs on the device are still being guessed at, but will be released at CES 2013. At this point, speculation points to a quad-core 1.8GHz processor, most likely developed in house, 2GB of RAM, a 13MP camera and a 4000mAh battery. In other words, besides the larger screen, the Huawei Ascend Mate specs are what you would expect to see on a 2013 high-end phone.

An ad for the Huawei Ascend Mate also was leaked, making it clear that the Chinese manufacturer has been targeting Samsung with this device all along. The ad shows the outline of the 6.1 inch screen compared with the outline of a 5.5 inch screen. Hmm. Wonder what device that is supposed to be. Earlier this month, Huawei Senior Vice President Yu Chengdong told prospective buyers of the Samsung GALAXY Note II to wait for the launch of the Huawei Ascend Mate and he called Samsung's device "grossly overpriced."

Huawei Ascend D2 makes a brief pre-CES appearance

Android Central

Android Central @ CES

CES is right around the corner, and one of the devices Huawei will be showing off will be the Ascend D2, which was announced a few weeks ago. A batch of pictures have bubbled up giving us a closer look at the otherwise camera-shy D2. We all remember its predecessor, the dickwad D Quad, and it's battery-boosted bro, the D Quad XL, but the D2 stands to be a significant step up from both of them. The source of the latest batch of pictures of the device confirms it will have an HD-grade (1080p?) 5-inch display, a quad-core 1.5 GHz processor, 13 megapixel camera, run Android 4.1, and have a big honkin' 3,000 mAh battery.

It's great to see Huawei continuing to push the higher-end market and get those devices into Europe and the U.S. - after all, competition is good, especially on price point. We may also see a new 6.1-inch tablet from Huawei at CES, which will be interesting to try out, to say the least.

Any of y'all happy Huawei device owners? Those that aren't, would you consider switching away from one of the bigger manufacturers if you could save a buck on your next device?

Huawei Ascend Y (U.S. Cellular)

The good: Huawei's Ascend Y smartphone has an attractive design, a comfortable feel, and a very low price tag.

The bad: Its Android 2.3 OS is outdated, the camera is poor, and 3G data speeds are very slow. Call quality is lacking.

The bottom line: The Huawei Ascend Y is an inexpensive foray into Android, but U.S. Cellular offers better phones at similar costs.

If there's one thing that U.S .Cellular does very well as a carrier, it's offer smartphones at very affordable prices. The Huawei Ascend Y Android handset costs only a penny in 3G areas, and $29.99 in markets with 4G.

And yes, you can consider price this Android 2.3 Gingerbread phone's most compelling feature. Beyond the outdated version of Android, the Ascend Y is 3G-only, and comes with basic hardware features, including a mediocre camera without a flash, a slower processor, and a smaller battery. The low-end feature set is intentional; smartphones cost a lot to make, and budget models like this lower the barrier for entry that faces those on tight budgets.

However, that doesn't mean the Ascend Y beats out its fellows. For instance, the much more developed LG Splendor costs the same up-front price on a Web special at the time of this review. Samsung's Galaxy Axiom is also a good deal, and is 4G-enabled.

Design and build
To Huawei's credit, their designers do put thought into their products, and as a result, the Ascend Y is pretty easy on the eye. It's black with rounded corners, some contouring on the face, and a dark gray, metallic strip on the back panel. At just 4.6 inches tall by 2.4 inches wide and 0.46-inch thick, it's a compact phone that's both palmable and pocketable. A soft-touch finish on the back cover makes it comfortable to hold and adds a little class to an otherwise plain backing.

The 4.4-ounce weight isn't as light as some phones, but in this case, the added gravity keeps the Ascend Y from looking and feeling too cheap.

There's a 3.5-inch HVGA touch screen with a pixel resolution of 480x320. The screen is extremely small by today's standards, but even a few months ago, top phones like the iPhone 4S, sported this size. A third-party app like SwiftKey or Swype might help out those who find the virtual keyboard too small to type on. I have relatively smaller fingertips, and was able to compose e-mail and texts with the normal number of errors. The screen quality itself is totally adequate, but colors may not look as bright and edges may not look as sharp as on more premium phone models.

Below the screen, you'll navigate with three touch-sensitive buttons. The power button and standard 3.5-millimeter headset jack are on top. On the left sits a rather short volume rocker; you'll plug your Micro-USB charger into the port on the bottom. The flash-less camera lens on the Ascend Y's B-side and micro-SD card slot beneath the back cover round out the simple hardware features.

Unfortunately, you have to pop the battery to swap in a larger card than the 2GB one that Huawei includes. The Ascend Y can hold up to 32GB in external storage.

OS and apps
Android 2.3 Gingerbread brings with it support for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS, plus all the tried-and-true Android features, including support for multiple social and e-mail accounts, multiple home pages, and access to a slew of Google services from the phone, voice navigation included.

Huawei adds its own custom layer on top of Gingerbread, enabling useful features like a lock screen that can snap open the camera, text messages, or the phone log. There's also access to quick settings from the notifications window, and the Huawei look and feel in the app tray.

Speaking of apps, you'll find some preloads when you first boot up the phone -- including a backup app, a slew of Amazon apps, a notebook app, a voice recorder, and a storefront for ringtones. I like that the Ascend Y comes with a voice dialer to complement its voice search app, though it's really just a shortcut to tasks you can already perform with Android.

An FM radio, a calculator, a calendar, a clock, a music player, and the WebKit browser all come standard with Android, and you can download any other apps, music, movies, and TV that you'd like from the updated Google Play store.

Cameras
Don't expect much from the Ascend Y's 3.2-megapixel camera and you may not be disappointed. It'll capture license plate numbers and help you remember where you parked, but you won't be turning a photo into a mug or an 8x10 wall print.

For starters, there's no flash, which means that night shots and indoor photos won't come out their best, if they come out at all. There's also no auto-focus, which means that you'll have to possess steady hands and a good eye for focus.

Huawei Ascend D2 reportedly spied while switched on, teases an upscale look

Huawei Ascend D2 reportedly spied while switched on

Huawei has already confirmed that we're going to see its extra-large Ascend D2 at CES, but that doesn't mean a sneak peek is unwelcome. ITHome is more than willing to sate our curiosity with a set of photos that purportedly show a fully functional version of the 5-inch smartphone. In a sense, we know what to expect from the software: the D2 appears to be using the same customized Android layer as the even larger Ascend Mate, just without that fifth column of icons. The shots do, however, suggest that Huawei is going for a design as premium-looking on the outside as it is high-powered on the inside. Not much else is known, but we'll likely understand Huawei's fuller ambitions in Las Vegas next month.
