Chrome for Android may soon have a Dev channel for avant-garde web viewers

Chrome for Android on Galaxy Note II

Desktop Chrome users have access to stable, beta and developer versions for some time, but Google has only opened up Android to the first two so far. It might willing to go one step further, if François Beaufort's discovery is any indication. The developer has spotted a Dev channel build of the mobile browser lurking in a tracker alongside the beta and stable code. While the release isn't accessible, it's clearly a step ahead of the latest public software. We've reached out to Google to learn whether or not this is a sign of downloadable Dev versions to come, or just a peek behind the curtain; we'll let you know if there's a chance to experiment even further with Chrome than what's possible today.

Google acquires e-commerce company Channel Intelligence for $125 million

Google just acquired the coupon-focused company Incentive Targeting and retail locker startup BufferBox in November, and it's now further bolstered its e-commerce offerings with an acquisition of Channel Intelligence for $125 million. That company is part of the ICG Group, and offers a variety of marketing and shopping services (primarily concerned with boosting sales) to other companies and online retailers, including Staples and Best Buy. It's also partnered with Google itself in recent years on Google Shopping. Barring any unforeseen hiccups, the company expects the acquisition to close sometime in the first quarter of this year.

Channel 4 inks deal with Microsoft to bring 4oD to Windows 8

Channel 4 inks deal with Microsoft to bring 4oD to Windows 84oD hits Windows 8

Channel 4 and Microsoft have announced a commercial partnership, which brings the on-demand 4oD app to Windows 8.

The free 4oD application is available to download from the Windows Store now and is the first of the major UK providers to launch on Microsoft's new operating system.

The app brings content from Channel 4, E4 and More 4, allowing users to catch up with the latest shows and the best from Channel 4's 30-year archive, including Father Ted and The Inbetweeners.

"The intuitive and visually captivating Windows 8 layout means that watching a programme, reading the synopsis in snap view and searching for other favourite programmes is truly discrete across all media forms: PC, laptop and tablet alike. Three views, one experience," said Channel 4 in a media release.

Beyond the launch of the app, which beats the likes of the iPlayer, ITV player and Sky Go to the new platform, C4 and Microsoft have come to a commercial arrangement to cross-promote their offerings.

Co-branded pre-roll apps will run across all 4oD platforms (online, Xbox 360, etc.) for the next three months.

Sarah Rose, Director of Commercial & Business Development at Channel 4 said: "This exciting collaboration has seen various teams at Channel 4 and other key stakeholders work closely together to deliver something that not only showcases our leading commercial VOD platform on Windows 8, but also Channel 4's ability to deliver a complete pioneering commercial solution."

The Stoner Channel: The POTUS Fries Fish, James Cameron's New Old Film, but There's No Time to Explain!

Dec 15, 2012 12:00 AM

Senator Pat Leahy (D-VT), chairman of the powerful Senate Judiciary Committee (it oversees the Department of Justice and gives Sen. Chuck Grassley something to do besides tweet), sent a very interesting note to R. Gil Kerlikowske, Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy, yesterday.

Last month, voters in Colorado and Washington chose to legalize personal use of up to one ounce of marijuana and to enact licensing schemes for cultivation and distribution of the drug. As the states move to implement these new laws, marijuana remains a Schedule I controlled substance according to the Federal Government. Production, distribution, and possession of the drug are Federal criminal offenses punishable by imprisonment.

The Senate Judiciary Committee has a significant interest in the effect of these developments on Federal drug control policy. How does the Office of National Drug Control Policy intend to prioritize Federal resources, and what recommendations are you making to the Department of Justice and other agencies in light of the choice by citizens of Colorado and Washington to legalize personal use of small amounts of marijuana? What assurance can and will the
administration give to state officials involved in the licensing of marijuana retailers that they will not face Federal criminal penalties for carrying out duties assigned to them under state law?

Legislative options exist to resolve the differences between Federal and state law in this area and end the uncertainty that residents of Colorado and Washington now face. One option would be to amend the Federal Controlled Substances Act to allow possession of up to one ounce of marijuana, at least in jurisdictions where it is legal under state law. In order to give these options full consideration, the Committee needs to understand how the administration intends to respond to the decision of the voters in Colorado and Washington. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on this matter.

Amending the CSA is definitely easier said than done, especially given how slowly the wheels of Capitol Hill turn these days, but it's a start. [Stop the Drug War - Image: AP]
