Must See HDTV (February 25th - March 3rd)

Must See HDTV February 25th March 3rd

Among the usual returning shows we have a few all new entries, including two new Comedy Central series as well as ABC's Red Widow conspiracy drama. For something we truly have not seen on TV before, Syfy is tossing in Robot Combat League, while ESPN does its part with a couple of 3D broadcasts planned.Look below for the highlights this week, followed after the break by our weekly listing of what to look out for in TV, Blu-ray and videogames.

Robot Combat League
If you were an avid Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots player or a huge fan of the movie Real Steel, Syfy's latest reality / game show is probably made for you. Robot Combat League is hosted by wrestler Chris Jericho and features competitors strapped into suits that translate their movements to eight-foot-tall robot avatars that actually do the fighting. Not sold? Take a peek now with not only a trailer embedded after the break, but also the first two episodes in their entirety (also viewable on the site in a larger window here). It's different to say the least and there's $100,000 on the line to make things interesting.
(February 26th, Syfy, 10PM)

Psych
One of our favorite shows returns for its seventh season as Shawn and Gus continue to operate their fake psychic detective agency. As always, we expect a number of nostalgic 80s and 90s throwbacks, complete with guest stars from the era. The show has manage to operate in a basic cable niche in a way network shows like Community don't get the chance to, although if you're not into its particular comedic flavor, it's unlikely to change gears at this point. Check out a trailer after the break.
(February 27th, USA, 10PM)

MLS
A new season of MLS kicks off this weekend and for US soccer fans all 20 matches will be aired ESPN channels, with 18 of them on Sundays for a more consistent -- and potentially subbing in for that other football -- schedule. Notable this season is that this is the first time the soccer league will be in 3D, with plans for seven live broadcasts plus an eighth that will be tape delayed. There are also plans for international matches, the All-Star game and the playoffs, dates and times TBD. the Portland Timbers vs. New York Red Bulls game this weekend will be the first in 3D, check the schedule for the rest.
(March 3rd, ESPN 2 / ESPN 3D, 7:30PM)

Must See HDTV (February 18th - 24th)

After its run on the internet and then cable TV, Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome is coming to Blu-ray, along with the second season of Game of Thrones and Monsters Inc. Sports fans have NASCAR racing to (try to) replace football, while movie buffs can keep an eye out for the Academy Awards on Sunday. Look below for the highlights this week, followed after the break by our weekly listing of what to look out for in TV, Blu-ray and videogames.

Top Gun 3D
After a short run in theaters, Top Gun 3D is coming home on Blu-ray. We've had the chance to watch it already and came away with (mostly) good things to say about the conversion. The 3D conversion is well done and particularly in the action scenes, as one watches F-14s zooming through the air it enhanced the feeling of speed and depth. Now, it's not all good news as we did notice a slightly different color tint on the 3D version, not necessarily bad, but different. Overall we liked it, so if you're looking for another 3D viewing option and are a fan of the original, it's worthwhile, but probably not required viewing. If you're not a 3D fan, this probably won't change your opinion.
($19.96 on Amazon)

Daytona 500
NASCAR is back and in full effect. If you like to see cars turning left then this is the series for you, and in a fresh twist, Danica Patrick will debut as the first female polesitter in race history. This race will also see the new Gen6 cars that are designed to not only be safer and faster, but also more closely resemble production automobiles. Whether you're watching the race end to end
(February 24th, Fox, 12PM)

Must See HDTV (February 11th - 17th)

Must See HDTV February 11th 17th

Regular season pro hoops action takes this weekend off for the All-Star Game, while NHL action is in full swing. Reality TV fans have new season of long running series Survivor and The Amazing Race to look forward to, and a new Bond is coming home on Blu-ray. Look below for the highlights this week, followed after the break by our weekly listing of what to look out for in TV, Blu-ray and videogames.

NBA All-Star Weekend
Celebs, up and coming players, and the league's top stars (as voted by fans and coaches) collide this weekend in Houston for the 2013 NBA All-Star Game. As always, there's some conflict about who is most qualified to play, and the usual controversy about whether or not the dunk contest will be any good this year. We'll be keeping an eye on the Rising Stars game Friday night to see which first or second year players are the best, and the second half of the ASG itself to see if Dwyane Wade hits Kobe in the face (again).
(All weekend, ESPN / TNT)

Skyfall
James Bond is back, in a nicely shot entry in the series. This flick has a slightly different angle as Bond, M and the rest of the agents find themselves under attack directly, but as usual Daniel Craig is up to the task.
($19.99 on Amazon)

State of the Union
Clear your Tuesday night schedule on several networks, as the President takes the stage for the first State of the Union Address of his second term in office. Regardless of your affiliation or even interest in politics, it does provide a good opportunity to compare/contrast the quality of each network's feed.

OUYA promises quick game approval process, reviews start by the end of February

OUYA promises quick game approval process, reviews start by the end of February

OUYA CEO Julie Uhrman's promising a quick, simple approval process for games on her company's upcoming Android-powered game console, the OUYA. She told us in an interview this week:

"It's similar to mobile: they'll submit their games, and we'll review for intellectual property infringement, and malware, and excessive pornography. But ultimately it's a quick review and you're in the storefront in one capacity or another."

That's not the only mobile model OUYA's following; Urhman already said the OUYA hardware will iterate on an annual basis, similar to the mobile market.

Despite the console's impending March launch to Kickstarter supporters, OUYA's yet to begin reviewing games for its storefront. "We literally just opened the ability for developers to upload their games into the store," Uhrman explained. The review process isn't too far off, however -- she's predicting a "middle-to-end of this month" timeframe. "We're building that right now," she said, when asked who's staffing that approvals process. "We are a start-up like any other start-up, it's just-in-time business."

The first consumer-ready OUYA consoles are planned for a March launch, with availability at retail to follow in June. The $99 console made a big splash on Kickstarter, eventually raising over $8.5 million when the original goal was a meager $950K.

Nothing's changed from the WiFi-only version apart from the additional micro-SIM slot, of course, and although there's no confirmed pricing, it's expected to cost 29,800 yen (around $318, a little more than in the US) when it pops up online. Given the rate at which new Nexus devices disappear from the Play store, those eager for one from the first batch should think about clearing their diaries, and adding "click refresh" to their weekend to-do list, a thousand times over.

Microsoft offers Windows 8 Pro upgrade to students for $70, starting February 1st

Windows 8 Pro boxes

The time when everyday PC owners can get a cheap Windows 8 Pro upgrade will soon be at an end, but that doesn't mean all prospective users will be left in the lurch. As of February 1st, the day the $40 promo pricing ends, American students and faculty members can download an upgrade to Pro for $70. A total of 49 other countries will also receive student discounts that take effect in a staggered rollout between February 21st and March 19th. The new pricing clearly won't be as much of a bargain as it is in the waning hours of January, but it's sight better than the $200 anyone outside of academia will need to pay.

BlackBerry Z10 tipped to come only in black at launch, white edition to arrive February 15th

BlackBerry Z10 tipped to come only in black at launch, white edition to arrive February 15th

We've had a note in from a well-placed friend who says that RIM's BlackBerry Z10 will only debut in Henry Ford's favorite color: black. Those looking for a white-tinted fruity smartphone will apparently have to wait until February 15th before being able to splash their hard-earned. Either way, as we're but a few short minutes away from Thorsten Heins' big moment, we won't have long to wait for confirmation.

Nokia rumoured to launch Windows RT tablet in February

Nokia rumoured to launch Windows RT tablet in FebruaryIs a tablet due February?

We've heard word of a possible Nokia tablet before, and the latest rumour says it could be announced at Mobile World Congress in February.

It could also run Windows RT, just like the Microsoft Surface. Though the Surface tablet running Windows 8 should be out by then.

The rumour comes from the supply chain in Taiwan, according to Digitimes. Though it is worth taking with a pinch of salt, seeing as Digitimes isn't the most reliable of sources.

The Nokia tablet is said to have a 10-inch screen, with Qualcomm's S4 processor inside. It's been delayed because Microsoft surprised everyone by announcing Surface, so Nokia decided to focus on smartphones for the time being, according to Digitimes.

But it's worth keeping this all in perspective. We heard rumours of a Nokia tablet before last year's Mobile World Congress, too. Though they could've been right, if the device was held back because of Surface.

Back in March, Nokia's head of design Marko Ahtisaari confirmed Nokia had a tablet in the works. He told a Finnish magazine, "We are working on it."

Nokia was keeping its cards close to its chest though, saying only, "We continue to eye the tablet space with interest but have made no specific announcements."

Mobile World Congress takes place from February 25-28. We'll be on hand to bring you all the news as it breaks.
