Black Friday online spending tops $1 billion for the first time ever

This holiday season was expected to be the largest yet in terms of online spending and thus far, consumers haven’t disappointed. Black Friday e-commerce numbers have been tallied and once again, a new spending record has been set.

Shoppers collectively shelled out more than $1 billion in online spending last Friday, according to comScore. To be more precise, the research firm says US retail spending hit $1.042 billion, good for a 26 percent increase over last year. Amazon was the top online destination followed by Walmart, Best Buy, Target and Apple.

$633 million was spent on Thanksgiving Day, representing a 32 percent year-over-year increase. It would appear that launching sales campaigns on Thanksgiving Day certainly paid off for retailers, or at least those that sell goods online.

A quick check of the entire holiday season to date reveals consumers have spent $13.7 billion on gifts thus far. This is right in line with comScore’s forecast, representing a 16 percent increase compared with the same time period in 2011.

comScore chairman Gian Fulgoni says online spending is up largely due to the fact that many consumers want to avoid crowds at the stores. All of this, he says, is despite the whirlwind of media coverage surrounding the importance of Black Friday in the brick-and-mortar world.

While it’s all good news for online retailers, physical stores are continuing to feel the pressure from their Internet competition. Early reports suggest that Black Friday sales in retail stores were down 1.8 percent over last year.

Next up on the docket is Cyber Monday, a day that is once again expected to set online spending records. It is believed that online spending could hit $1.5 billion or higher today.

90% of This Year's Black Friday Ads Have the Exact Same Items and Prices As Last Year's Black Friday AdsIt's not always super door buster TV deals that are better and even cheaper than last year, a lot of times big box stores sell the same exact items for the same exact price. Hell, sometimes they even charge more. NerdWallet took a look at Black Friday Ads and found some interesting stuff.

NerdWallet took a look at 22 Black Friday ad scans and found that 20 of them had at least one product at the same exact price as 2011's Black Friday ads. They're not the big ticket items like TVs or laptops but you could find printers and external hard drives that have been the same two years running. Basically, you don't have to toss in items into your cart this year just because it's Black Friday—those prices will come back.

On top of the duplication of deals, NerdWallet found that the median item price at Wal-Mart, Target and Best Buy have all increased. Check out more about the analysis of 2012 Black Friday ads here. [Nerd Wallet via Consumerist]

Reports claim LTE iPad 4 ship date set for Friday

Reports claim LTE iPad 4 ship date set for Nov. 16Yes, it's a smaller iPad

The last two weeks or so have been a bumpy ride for Apple customers who bought an iPad 4 or iPad mini with cellular LTE capabilities.

Apple neglected to nail down a solid release date for the LTE iPads, instead proclaiming vague time frames like "mid-November."

But on Monday morning, a report claimed that some customers had been notified that they would receive their LTE iPad 4 tablets Friday, Nov. 16.

Apple initially promised to ship the Wi-Fi + Cellular versions of the iPad 4 and iPad mini within two weeks of the Wi-Fi models going out on Nov. 2, and a Nov. 16 arrival date fits within that projection.

Apple's initial promise to ship the new LTE iPads within two weeks of Nov. 2 seemed like it would prove inaccurate in late October when some customers reported expected arrival times as late as Nov. 23.

On Halloween, customers reported that those new iPad ship dates disappeared, replaced by the noncommittal "mid-November."

Then, on Friday, Apple reportedly began notifying customers that LTE-enabled iPad mini models would begin shipping within five business days, while Apple offered a "seven business days" time frame for the LTE iPad 4.

With Monday's claims pointing to Friday as the day customers will see the LTE iPad with Retina display, those reports wouldn't be too far off.

The new iPad mini and iPad 4 went up for pre-order in late October, and Apple reported in the first week of November that three million of the new tablet models had already been sold.

However, reports late last month also claimed that iPad mini screen shortages could possibly limit supplies for some time.

The Wi-Fi + Cellular model of the iPad 4 costs $629 (UK£499, AUD$679), $729 (UK£579, AUD$789) and $829 (UK£659, AUD$899) for 16GB, 32GB and 64GB, respectively.

The iPad mini with LTE, meanwhile, comes in at $459 (UK£369, AUD$509), $559 (UK£449, AUD$619) and $659 (UK£529, AUD$729) for the same storage capacities.
