Tokyo court fines Google for not censoring defamatory instant search results

Image

Remember the sad tale of the Japanese man that Google's Instant Search forced out of a job? Entering his name into the search bar, and Google's auto-complete algorithm tacked on accusations of nefarious acts that he was allegedly responsible for -- causing his employers to hand him his pink slip. Afterward, John Doe-san took Google to court, but Mountain View refused to intervene. That's why the Tokyo District Court has fined Google 300,000 yen ($3,068) for the mental distress, which will be paid to the unnamed individual in question.

Amazon corrals FX's Justified to exclusive Prime Instant Video deal

Amazon's Prime Instant Video Named the Exclusive Online Subscription Home of FX Series Justified

Fan-favorite series The Shield will also join the Prime Instant Video catalog for Amazon Prime members to instantly stream at no additional cost

Amazon recently announced that PBS favorite series Downton Abbey and the anticipated summer series Under the Dome from CBS will soon be available exclusively on Prime Instant Video

SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 26, 2013-- (NASDAQ:AMZN) – Amazon.com, Inc. today announced a content licensing agreement with Sony Pictures Television, making Prime Instant Video the exclusive online subscription home to the FX Network western crime drama Justified. The award-winning and gritty series has been one of the most watched shows on Amazon Instant Video, where customers can purchase and download episodes for $1.99 each, and will now be available to Prime members at no additional cost. In addition, Prime Instant Video will add the critically-acclaimed inner-city Los Angeles crime drama The Shield to its catalog.

"Justified and The Shield are two fan-favorites on Amazon," said Brad Beale, Director of Digital Video Content Acquisition for Amazon. "We're consistently looking for ways to make Prime even better – and one of the ways we're doing that is adding shows like these that we know customers love. Prime members have tens of thousands of episodes of their favorite series like Downton Abbey, Falling Skies, and now Justified and The Shield, to enjoy on hundreds of devices, at no additional cost."

"We have a great relationship with Amazon and we're excited to give fans more opportunities to view these two great dramas," said John Weiser, President of US Distribution for Sony Pictures Television. "We know Amazon's Prime Instant Video service is the ideal platform for viewers to see their favorite episodes of these critically acclaimed series and to also open the show up to new audiences who we know will quickly get hooked on them."

Earlier this month, Amazon and CBS announced an extension of their non-exclusive licensing agreement, including the subscription debuts of The Amazing Race and Undercover Boss, as well as a deal that will make Prime Instant Video the exclusive subscription home for the anticipated series Under the Dome this summer. Amazon also recently announced that Prime Instant Video will soon become the exclusive online subscription home for PBS hit Downton Abbey. Prime Instant Video offers more than 37,000 movies and TV episodes for Amazon Prime members to stream, commercial free, at no additional cost on Kindle Fire, Kindle Fire HD, iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, Roku, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii and Wii U, among other devices. AutoTether for Android produces an instant in-car hotspot

AutoTether gives Android and Automatica users an instant incar hotspot

If you're anything like us, you get slightly twitchy when you can't use any of your WiFi-only devices when parked (or a passenger) in a car. You now won't even have to think about whether or not you're online, if you're an Android user. Inrete's new AutoTether app automatically invokes an Android phone's WiFi hotspot as soon as the handset pairs up with a given Bluetooth device: step into a ride with a Bluetooth-equipped stereo and you'll have an internet connection for every device inside, as long as you're present. Inrete sees its app as a syncing tool for its Automatica car audio companion, but it clearly has uses for the kids' Nexus 7 in the back seat or a significant other's MacBook Air in the front. Check the Google Play link for what could be the next-best thing to a hotspot built into the car itself.

Amazon brings Instant Video to iPhone and iPod touch

Amazon brings Instant Video to iPhone and iPod touchVids on your idevice

Amazon has brought its Instant Video streaming app to the iPhone and iPod touch, joining the iPad.

The update means owners of the iPhone and iPod touch can now stream and download movies and TV shows to their device.

Videos you've bought through Instant Video using other devices will automatically show up on your iPhone or iPod touch once you log in. And if you're a member of Amazon Prime, you can stream anything from the Prime Instant Video library, which consists of over 30,000 videos, all free.

The app launched for iPad at the end of November.

The Watchlist feature is like a wishlist, keeping track of everything you've tagged to watch later. You can add to it as you go, straight from your Apple device, then open it up whenever you want and dive straight in.

Everything you've bought or rented from Amazon will be stored in a section called Your Video Library, which again, you can open up any time and delve into.

The app is a free download, and will work with the third generation iPod touch and later, iPhone 3GS and later, or any iPad. It's also optimised for the iPhone 5's 4-inch screen.
