Pantech Perception official for Verizon, delivers motion-aware Android on April 25th

Pantech Perception launches on Verizon April 25th for $100

Unofficial details of the Pantech Perception have been around for long enough for the phone to feel old, but the truth is that it's only just getting started. The 4.8-inch, mid-tier Android smartphone is at last launching with Verizon on April 25th, and it should cost $100 on contract after subscribers cash in a $50 rebate. It won't trigger much regret among Galaxy S 4 buyers when it's carrying a more GS3-like Super AMOLED 720p screen, 16GB of storage, an 8-megapixel rear camera and a 2-megapixel front shooter. That said, Pantech does promise an extra level of software savvy: the company's customized variant of Ice Cream Sandwich (soon to upgrade to Jelly Bean) centers on a Motion Sense suite that lets owners wave their hands to answer calls, switch tracks or navigate contacts and photo galleries. While we can't say we're bowled over by that claimed advantage, the Perception may just hit the sweet spot for those who want an alternative to HTC and Samsung for a bigger handset.

THE X PRIZE FOUNDATION & SINGULARITY UNIVERSITY TEAM WITH DELOITTE TO ADVANCE INNOVATION AROUND THE WORLD

New Alliance Launches the Innovation Partnership Program

LOS ANGELES, CA (March 29, 2013) - Three recognized leaders advancing innovation in industry, education and business have announced a new alliance to spur global development and help humanity solve its greatest challenges. The Innovation Partnership Program (IPP), a three--year alliance of the X PRIZE Foundation, the leader in solving grand challenges through large--scale, global incentivized competitions, Singularity University, a unique Silicon Valley educational institute and business incubator which explores the disruptive influences and global growth opportunities of exponentially advancing technologies, and Deloitte, a leader in human capital, strategy, and operations, and technology consulting services, leverage their respective strengths to drive innovation across multiple industries and business sectors. The announcement was made jointly by Dr. Peter H. Diamandis, Chairman and CEO of the X PRIZE Foundation; Rob Nail, Associate Founder and CEO of Singularity University; and Marcus Shingles, Partner at Deloitte Consulting LLP.

More than 60 senior business leaders from 30 iconic companies, including Google, Shell, Qualcomm, and Sprint Nextel met in Silicon Valley from March 23--26, for the inaugural 4--day IPP Executive Session, which consisted of a wide array of workshops on crowdsourcing, the rapid advancement of exponential technologies and how to innovate through incentivized competitions. IPP is where Fortune 500 thought leaders came to intersect with Silicon Valley, reaching across global markets to connect the most knowledgeable industry leaders and innovators in a highly curated and unprecedented summit.

A signature element of IPP, "The Path Forward" was a discussion led by Deloitte, based on their 10 Steps of Innovation and Scaling Edges approach for organizational characteristics and adoption of innovation. Other highlights of IPP were seven CEO case studies by crowdsourcing pioneers including Quirky. Recent headlines regarding advances in digital medicine, sensor technologies, and 3D printing were also topical discussions of leading advancements.

"IPP is proof of the amazing and productive dialogue that can result when a group of diverse and daring industry leaders, scientists, entrepreneurs, inventors, and thought leaders come together to discuss innovative business strategies and exponential technologies," said Kian Gohar, Executive Director, Innovative Partnership Program. "We are very fortunate to have such great partners that share our passion and commitment to this unique ecosystem where the Fortune 500 meets Silicon Valley."

"This new era of rapid--pace innovation requires bold thinking and action from all fronts. IPP is about expanding the innovation ecosystem and related capabilities that we bring to our clients," Marcus Shingles from Deloitte.

"It was worth every minute. The exposure to new ideas is remarkably refreshing and different here," said Daniel Hesse, CEO of Sprint Nextel Corp. "IPP brings to mind the words of Wayne Gretzky, 'It's skating to where the puck is going.'"

IPP is a partnership of Fortune 500 companies that includes a biannual summit, with the next one scheduled for September 18--22, 2013 in Silicon Valley. For more information on the Innovation Partnership Program, please visit www.xprize.org/ipp. # # #

China to get first official taste of Surface Pro outside of North America

China to get first official taste of Surface Pro outside of North America

Microsoft's Surface Pro will mark its first venture outside the cozy confines of the Americas by heading to China on April 2nd, according to its Weibo site. That could also mean that lovers of the convertible tablet in Australia, parts of Europe and elsewhere might also be able to grab one soon -- as Redmond indicated earlier that it would roll out in those countries around the same time. There's no word yet on pricing or where to get one, but Microsoft recently launched its flagship Chinese store on Tmall, so that would be a good place for shoppers there to start -- assuming they're interested.

Toyota and BMW make it official, commit to green vehicle technology partnership

Toyota and BMW make it official, commit to green vehicle technology partnership

We're well aware Toyota and BMW are pretty good pals, but details of their ongoing study sessions on green vehicle tech have been vague thus far. The trickle of information continues, and today the companies met to autograph more bits of paper and clasp hands for the camera. New binding agreements were signed to reaffirm deals inked in March and June last year, and their research into next-generation lithium-ion batteries has been expanded to cover the lithium-air kind (hopefully, they are less flammable). Work on making vehicles lighter continues, and they expect to complete development of an inclusive fuel cell system by the distant target of 2020. Expect to see some fruits of BMW and Toyota's labor before then, though, as they intend to "define a joint platform concept for a mid-sized sports vehicle" by the end of the year. Don't get too excited -- we imagine that jargon means we'll be privy to a few bits of artwork and some inspirational words come the deadline. If you'd like to know more about the evolving partnership, check out the source links below.

Sony Xperia Z could be official name for Yuga

Sony Xperia Z could be official name for YugaWill it be Zing or Zzzzz?

So it looks like we're going to be treated to the Sony Xperia Z next year, sporting a huge screen and some powerful innards.

We've been hearing a lot of reports regarding the Xperia Yuga but it was always thought that the name was a production alias, with Xperia Z fitting in nicely with the firm's single letter approach.

The Sony Xperia Z name comes via an Xperia Blog source, who the site claims is credible although we have no real way of knowing.

In keeping with previousrumours the source also parrots the specifications of the Xperia Z, claiming that it will indeed sport a full HD, 5-inch display packed with Sony's TV technology as well as being both water and dust proof.

Although Sony is yet to confirm, or deny the existence of the Xperia Z it's expected to be unveiled at CES 2013 in Las Vegas.

TechRadar will be in attendance to bring you all the latest from the Japanese manufacturer and any super-sized handset it may have.

The Lego Back to the Future Set Is Now OFFICIAL!

Dec 20, 2012 3:25 PM

It's official, people. We won! The Lego Back to the Future—one of the Holy Grails of Lego—is going to be an official set! The fans have spoken and Lego has approved it. They are going to produce it for everyone to buy it! Yes, i'm so excited.

Just like it happened to the Lego Minecraft set, the BTTF Cuusoo project received enough votes to be reviewed. Unlike other proposed models, this one was approved because it has high playability and it's a universally known and beloved property.

We don't know the price or what it is going to include yet, but at least we will have the basic DeLorean, Marty and Doc Brown. It wouldn't take many more pieces to make the other versions from the same set, so I think it is not crazy to assume that you will be able to easily build your favorite version.

I'm definitely going to buy this one, and then build the Lego Hill Valley.

And one more thing: the creators have donated their 1% cut to the Michael J. Fox Foundation to help fight Parkinson's disease. I hope Lego matches that 1%. [Lego BTTF and Lego Cuusoo]

PlayStation: The Official Magazine being shuttered, will say farewell with holiday issue

By Alexis Santos posted Nov 7th 2012 8:31AM PlayStation: The Official Magazine being shuttered, will say farewell with holiday issue

The publisher of PlayStation: The Official Magazine has confirmed to Game Informer that the Sony-minded periodical will board up its doors by year's end. This isn't the first gaming zine that publisher Future US has called it quits on this year -- news of Nintendo Power's closure broke this August. Just like the Nintendo-centric themed publication, the PlayStation mag's last issue will be its holiday edition. However, unlike Newsweek's leap to a purely digital existence, there's no indication that the magazine could see life online.
