Snapdragon 800 confirmed for LG Optimus G successor

Optimus G2: the universe's most powerful robot ... er... phone!Related storiesNew benchmark could point to LG Optimus G2 with Snapdragon 800LG exec reveals new Android tablet plans, Optimus G2 global rolloutLG may say 'hello' to voice commands with new Snapdragon 800 device

LG and Qualcomm today announced that the next G series phone will sport the super-specced Snapdragon 800 processor, confirming months of rumours.

Although details of the phone haven't been announced, the Optimus G follow up will supposedly feature Android 4.2: Jelly Bean, a 5-inch full HD display, 2GB RAM, 32GB internal storage, 13MP camera and a 3,000mAh battery.

With the Snapdragon 800 capable of hitting speeds of 2.3GHz and including LTE, the processor will make the Optimus G2 a very powerful, 4G-enabled phone.

"The new, best-in-class Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor will help deliver blazing fast web browsing, eye-popping graphics, seamless connectivity as well as an unmatched multimedia experience," said Murthy Renduchintala, Qualcomm's Executive Vice President.

The G series sequel

According to Renduchintala, the new LG phones will be "fully tailored and tightly integrated with the entire next G series platform".

Qualcomm touts that the Snapdragon 800 will deliver 75 per cent better battery performance than its S4 Pro processor, supports higher display resolutions and also allows the recording and playing of 4K, or Ultra HD, video.

While exact specs for the Optimus sequel is unknown, the new processor leaves the door wide open for a number of extra features for the Optimus G2.

Reportedly, the phone could also sport always-on voice command, which is also a feature set of the Snapdragon 800, allowing users to create custom phrases for phone commands.

LG's NYC press event aims to 'share the genius' of the Optimus G Pro

LG

LG's just shed some much needed light on its May 1st New York event. Turns out the "genius" the company will be celebrating stands for Atlas Genius -- as in the band -- and the star of this fete: the Optimus G Pro. We've already seen and very favorably reviewed the global model of LG's performance flagship (for the G's successor, you'll have to wait until Q3) and now it looks like the US is in store for a potential carrier-branded version of its own. If it arrives internally unmolested, we're looking at a 5.5-inch 1080p True HD IPS+ display, Snapdragon 600 and a 2.1-megapixel / 13-megapixel camera setup capable of dual video recording. We'll be on-site for this stateside debut, so stay tuned for the fully monty.

LG Optimus G sequel coming Q3 2013, will stick close to 5-inch screen size

LG's been teasing a big reveal for the start of May over in the US and we reckon it'll mark the official launch of the Optimus G Pro. But what about the not-so-humble Optimus G and the rest of the world? Well, we've been told that a (global-bound!) sequel flagship from LG will appear sometime in Q3. Direct from LG's HQ in Seoul, Won Kim, Head of Mobile Marketing says that we can expect "something different and something unique", which all sounds good to us. It'll also be something that won't skirt near the 5.5-inch screen size of the Optimus G Pro, and will instead stick closer to the five-inch mark. Unfortunately, he kept his explanation of new device tantalizingly vague for now, but it looks like LG will wait for the current flagship phone fight to settle a bit before it reveals its new weapon.

How would you change LG's Optimus 4X HD?

LG Optimus 4X HD review runnerup to the quadcore throne

Last year, LG went on a campaign to rebuild its reputation as a smartphone maker that could play with the big boys. When we reviewed the Optimus 4X HD, we found that it deserved to be spoken in the same breath as the One X and Galaxy S III, and probably caught the attention of some folks over at Google. Many of you bought this handset, so the age-old question we'd like to ask is simple. What did you like, what did you loathe and if you were LG, what would you have changed?

LG Optimus G Pro update features detailed in a walkthrough video (update: arrives April 12th)

LG Optimus G Pro Value Pack Upgrade
(SEOUL--Korea Newswire) April 11, 2013 -- The Optimus G Pro, LG's first Full HD display smartphone launched in Korea in March, will get the Value Pack upgrade with new and improved UX features on April 12.

New features include:

[Smart Video]

Recognizes the position of the viewer's eyes and automatically plays or stops the video without any manual input from the user. When the viewer's eyes are no longer focused on the smartphone display, the front camera recognizes this and immediately pauses the video. Once the user's gaze returns to the smartphone, the video resumes playback from the point last viewed.

[Dual Camera]

Extending the Dual Recording function, LG is introducing Dual Camera through this Value Pack upgrade. The world's first Dual Camera function simultaneously captures photographs of both the subject and the shooter using both the front and back cameras for a picture-in-picture composition.

[Pause & Resume Recording]

The Pause & Resume Recording feature allows the user to pause and start in record mode for one continuous video file. Until now, a new video clip would be created when recording restarted, which resulted in multiple video files.

In addition to these new features, some current functions will receive upgrades. Magic Remote Pad will be added to the existing QRemote function to work specifically with LG Smart TVs. Similar to the touch pads of most notebooks, Magic Remote Pad turns the Optimus G Pro into a remote control for LG Smart TVs. What`s more, Text Keypad, another new addition to QRemote, will make typing on a Smart TV easier than ever before by turning the Optimus G Pro into a convenient input device.

Please refer to this video for a demonstration of the upgraded UX features:

LG Optimus F7 leaked as potential suitor for Boost Mobile

LG Optimus F7 leaked as potential suitor for Boost Mobile

Travel back to the time of Mobile World Congress and you'll surely recall the LG Optimus F7, a well-specced mid-tier smartphone that left us quite impressed. Now, @evleaks has shared a peek of the device that's adorned with the Now Network's branding, and if all goes according to plans, the serial leaker suggests the phone will soon hit Sprint-owned Boost Mobile. A few notable features of the Optimus F7 include a 4.7-inch True HD IPS display, a dual-core 1.5GHz CPU, an 8-megapixel primary camera, 2GB RAM and Android 4.1.2, which would pose a heavy challenge to Boost's current premiere smartphone, the HTC One SV. Naturally, we'd certainly welcome the Optimus F7 on Sprint (and even Virgin Mobile), and given the Sprint Zone branding, we'll remain cautiously hopeful that Dan Hesse is thinking the same.

How would you change LG's Optimus L7?

Image

When we placed LG's Optimus L7 into the palm of our reviewer, they found the handset to be stylish, with a cracking display, excellent battery life and a (then) up-to-date version of Android. Sadly, the party ended after that -- with sluggish internals that can't cope with the company's UI tweaks, weak touchscreen and a lackluster camera. But we're fairly sure our review didn't dissuade all of you from buying one of these, so to those people we ask the following: what, if you were Mr. and Mrs. LG, would you have done differently?

LG E980 arrives in the FCC's database with LTE: is this the Optimus G Pro for AT&T?

LG E980 arrives in the FCC's database with LTE is this the Optimus G Pro for AT&T

It's reported that the E980 is LG's codename for the Optimus G Pro (considering that the E970 is the Optimus G), and while we've already reviewed the global variant, it sure looks as if AT&T is setting itself up to carry the handset here in the US of A. Arriving in the FCC's database today is the item you see above, replete with LTE bands that match AT&T's profile. Assuming it's the G Pro, AT&T loyalists can get ready for a 5.5-inch, 1080p display, one of the fastest mobile processors on the planet, 2GB of RAM and a Jelly Bean-infused edition of Android. The only remaining questions? When, where, how much, and in what color.

LG trolls Samsung's Times Square billboards with Optimus G '4' ads

LG trolls Samsung's Times Square billboards with Optimus G '4' ads

The press is headed to Radio City Music Hall for Samsung's Galaxy S IV event in a few hours, but the company has also taken up consumer-focused presence in Times Square -- where rival LG is waiting. As shown in the pic, LG has refashioned its billboards (which it already occupied for 20 years before the new neighbor moved in below last year) to mock Samsung's "4" themed advertising, touting that the Optimus G is "here 4 you now", among other messages. They'd probably have a better chance of grabbing our attention if the upgraded Optimus G Pro were here 4 us instead, but that's not an option yet. Still, we have to appreciate a prank pulled off well enough that it even scores some screen time in a Samsung promo video (at :49 and 2:04) embedded after the break.

LG outs Quick Cover case for the Optimus G Pro

LG outs Quick Cover case for the Optimus G Pro

LG's just pulled back the curtains on Quick Cover: a magnet-infused case for the Optimus G Pro. Thanks to a Smart Cover-like design, the jacket turns the smartphone's screen on when its front flap is lifted, and off when it's shut. The sleeves come in black, blue, lime green, pink and white hues reminiscent of Samsung's own flip covers, and are accompanied by a reflective cube pattern option that comes in shades of black and white. By the sound of LG's press release, wireless charging and NFC capabilities should go unhindered when hardware is dressed up with a Quick Cover. South Korean online stores and brick-and-mortar shops will soon have the solid colors available for 43,000 won ($40), while the patterned variety will ring up at 39,000 won ($36). There's no word of a release in other territories just yet, so you'll have to sit tight if the accessories strike your fancy.

Alleged press shots out LG Optimus F5 as Verizon's mid-range Lucid 2

DNP

About a week ago, we went hands-on with LG's new mid-range LTE-capable Optimus F5 and F7 smartphones at MWC. At the time it was unknown where these handsets would land in the US, but it appears that we now have the goods on the former. According to a pair of alleged press shots obtained by UnwiredView, LG's F5 will be showing up on Verizon in the not so distant future. Said to be a follow up to last year's Lucid, this mid-tier device's main bullet points include a modest 4.3-inch qHD display, a 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor, a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera (capable of 1080p video capture) and Android 4.1.2. Sure, the Lucid 2's specs remind us more of a keyboard shortcut and less of a powerful storm -- we just hope that its price tag will also be a refresh. If so, that should make this device a considerable option for first-time smartphone buyers looking to make the jump to LTE.

LG reveals Optimus L3II worldwide rollout starts this week in Brazil

LG OPTIMUS L3II MAKES ITS WORLD DEBUT
Second Device in LG's New L SeriesII Launches In South America

BARCELONA, Feb. 27, 2013 – Hot on the heels of the Optimus L7II launch in Russia, LG Electronics (LG) announced that the second model in its new generation Optimus L SeriesII will make its world debut in Brazil this week. This will be followed by single and dual SIM models being introduced in the other markets of South and Central America, Europe, Asia, Middle East and Africa.

Optimus L3II advances the styling and convenience of the original Optimus L3 smartphone with a new flair that complements its user experience. The Optimus L3II continues LG's design heritage with four new elements that make the device eye catching and fun to use: Seamless Layout, Laser Cut Contour, Radiant Rear Design, and colorful Smart LED Lighting on the home button.

Beyond the phone's sleek exterior, Optimus L3II offers an upgraded user experience with a stylish makeover. Thanks to its larger capacity battery, Optimus L3II now offers QuickMemo with Overlay mode - previously only available in LG's premium smartphones - to boost productivity. QuickMemo with Overlay mode allows users to jot notes on a transparent "layer" while still being able to view another screen in the background. This eliminates the need to split the screen and allows both QuickMemo and the other application to be viewed in full-screen mode simultaneously.

"The Optimus L3II is a versatile phone for the smart and stylish individual," said Dr. Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. "Its improved user experience makes this an attractive device for customers who want to express their sense of style without sacrificing functionality."

The Optimus L3II comes in four colors tailored to users' individual styles: indigo black, white, pink and titan. Prices will be announced at a later date.
Optimus L3II Key Specifications:
• OS: Android Jelly Bean 4.1.2
• Processor: 1 GHz Single Core
• Display: 3.2-inch QVGA IPS
• Memory: 4 GB / 512 MB RAM
• Camera: 3.0MP
• Battery: 1,540mAh
• Size: 102.6 x 61.1 x 11.9mm (Single SIM) / 102.9 x 61.3 x 11.9mm (Dual SIM)

LG's 5.5-inch Optimus G Pro is the first with a Snapdragon 600 quad-core CPU

LG finally showed off the XL 5.5-inch version of its upcoming Optimus G Pro at the end of a Facebook promo last week, and now it's revealed a launch date in Korea, more specs and a window for arrival in North America. Also of note? Its CPU is the just-announced quad-core Snapdragon 600 running at 1.7Ghz. Announced at CES, the 600 is supposed to be a milder upgrade (compared to the potentially 2.3GHz Snapdragon 800) to its predecessor, the powerful S4 Pro. New software tweaks include a dual record that uses both cameras simultaneously and VR Panorama that appears to be similar to Google's Photo Sphere stitching.

Besides the expanded 1080p screen and updated internals, the larger version also sports a slightly larger battery than the Japanese version announced previously by NTT Docomo with 3,140mAh compared to 3,000, but keeps the 2GB of RAM, 13MP rear camera, microSDXC slot and LTE. The phone will be released on local carriers SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus on Wednesday for 968,000 won ($897), while a North American launch is mentioned for Q2 along with the Japanese release. We'll find out more about this phone -- and likely a few others -- at MWC 2013 later this week, for now check out the press release after the break for more specs.LG Optimus G Pro 5.5-inchSee all photoswhen.eng("eng.galleries.init")

LG touts 15 million Optimus LSeries phones sold like so many washing machines

As stylish as it can be, LG's Optimus L Series is very appliance-like, the smartphone line that gets the job done versus the more luxuriant Optimus G. It's almost no surprise, then, that LG's sales rate has accelerated to the volume we'd expect from an air conditioner or fridge: just two months after the L Series hit 10 million in sales since launch, it's already at 15 million. That's no doubt heartening to LG, especially with the L Series II right around the corner. We doubt Samsung will break into cold sweats, though. When the Galaxy S III alone moved twice as many units by November of last year, LG still has some catching up to do in 2013.

15 MILLION CUSTOMERS APPROVE OF LG OPTIMUS L SERIES

SEOUL, Feb. 15, 2013 ? LG Electronics (LG) announced today it sold an Optimus L Series device every second over the past two months, propelling sales of the popular smartphones to over 15 million units. Since its launch at Mobile World Congress (MWC) last year, Optimus L Series smartphones have become the device of choice for individuals around the world who favor a well-balanced smartphone with a unique design. Building on this momentum, LG will unveil a new generation of the stylish series at MWC 2013 with an upgraded design and improved features.

The Optimus L SeriesII will carry on the legacy of its predecessor, offering a user experience unique to LG smartphones. The Optimus L3II, Optimus L5II and Optimus L7II all feature a comfortable contour with laser-etched details in a slim unibody design. The sleek and customizable devices are also differentiated by smart LED lighting around the home button to mirror users' unique styles.

"The success of the Optimus L Series is testament to our belief all along that there is indeed a market for well-balanced smartphones that represent individuals' unique tastes," said Dr. Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. "The new Optimus L SeriesII expands upon the design philosophy of the original series so we're quite confident that we'll have another hit on our hands."

The new Optimus L SeriesII smartphones will be unveiled at Mobile World Congress later this month. Visitors to MWC are encouraged to see these new models up close at the LG booth in Hall 3.

LG reveals 5.5-inch Optimus G Pro design with curved glass

LG reveals 55inch Optimus G Pro design with curved glass

Clearly, a lot of us wanted LG to reveal the design of the 5.5-inch Optimus G Pro as quickly as possible: just a day after a teaser, we're looking at the complete picture. And it's quite a looker, by all counts. While it has the familiar digital cube pattern on the back, it's also using curved glass in black or white, which LG says produces a "2.5D" effect. Those other details that LG is willing to divulge are largely what we expected based on the Japanese edition, including a full HD (1080p) display and a quad-core processor that's likely the Snapdragon S4 Pro. LG expects the larger G Pro to launch in late February, although it didn't say whether or not this is limited to South Korea; based on the timing, though, we might get a peek at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. LG reveals Optimus L Series II, dualSIM L7II is the first to launch

As usual, LG can't wait for the show to start to display its latest phones and is previewing the Optimus L Series II line ahead of MWC 2013. Just like its predecessors, the L Series II will come in a variety of sizes, with a 3.2-inch L3II, 4.0-inch L5II and 4.3-inch L7II on the way. According to LG, the second coming of the L Style adds Seamless Layout, Laser Cut Contour, Radiant Rear Design and Smart LED Lighting design elements to the beauty of the original phones. LG INTRODUCES NEXT GENERATION OPTIMUS L SERIES AT MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS

SEOUL, Feb. 12, 2013 – LG is staying true to its rich design heritage at this year's Mo-bile World Congress (MWC) with the introduction of the Optimus L SeriesII. The widely successful L Series has evolved to include contemporary design aesthetics and innovations that improve on the original. With more than 10 million Optimus L Series phones sold in the first 10 months, L SeriesII looks to continue this momentum with its sophisticated style and differentiated features.

Optimus L SeriesII embodies the beauty of the first L Series but with a more refined touch. The design philosophy of L SeriesII has been enhanced to include four new design elements: Seamless Layout, Laser Cut Contour, Radiant Rear Design and Smart LED Lighting on the home button.

Safety Care offers three options – Emergency Call Forwarding, Phone Non-Usage Notice and My Location Notice – which can be programmed to contact a loved one in case of an emergency.

User experience is enhanced with the high-resolution IPS display and extended capacity battery in the Optimus L SeriesII. What's more, Dual SIM versions of the Optimus L SeriesII smartphone will enable customers to use one device for both business and per-sonal calls.

"LG has a history of pushing the envelope when it comes to style and Optimus L SeriesII builds on this heritage of design innovation," said Dr. Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. "By evolving the sophisticated style and premium features of the original Optimus L Series, its sequel is expected to continue the popularity of the L Series around the world."

The Dual SIM version of the Optimus L7II will be the first of the new series to launch, making its debut in Russia this week. Bigger LG Optimus G Pro spotted with 5.5-inch 1080p display, headed for Korea?

Are LG working on a bigger Optimus G Pro 55inch screen and an even bigger battery spotted

Remember the LG Optimus G? Then the Optimus G Pro, headed exclusively Japan? Well how about another iteration? Apparently bound for the Korean homelands, this one's still called the Optimus G Pro, but expands to a 5.5-inch 1080p display, as well as getting a battery bump-up to 3,140mAh. According to the leaked spec sheet sent to Phone Arena, this will join a 1.7GHz Snapdragon processor, alongside a healthy 2GB of RAM and a whopping 32GB of storage -- plus microSD expansion. Is LG readying something similar for its global fans? We'll give them a few more weeks to fill us in.

LG Optimus L7 successor leaks in Russia with 4.3-inch display, dual-SIM ability

Successor to the budget LG Optimus L7 leaks in Russia with 43inch display, dualSIM ability

As entry-level phones go, last year's Optimus L7 had a few pluses on its score sheet -- but equally some serious drawbacks, including a reluctant touchscreen and a shoddy camera module. There's always hope for progress in this business, however, and given that LG already hinted at a new L-series phone in its earnings report, we're inclined to believe a leak that's just come in from Russian site Hi.tech.mail.ru. The pictures show a much softer-edged design with a dedicated SIM-switch button down below, in both black and white. In terms of specs, we're looking at a 2,460mAh battery that is said to last for two days, an 8-megapixel rear camera capable of 720p video and a 1GHz dual-core chip powering Android 4.1 with LG's custom UI on top. The Russian price of 12,990 rubles equates to around $430, which is a lot more than the $300 SIM-free price of the first L7 (not to mention a Nexus 4) -- but then these currency conversions are often wayward.

LG bends the rules and says the LG Optimus Vu sold 1 million units in South Korea

Earlier on Monday,we told you that the Samsung GALAXY Note II had sold 1 million units in South Korea over 90 days. But Samsung isn't the only South Korean manufacturer to sell 1 million units of a phablet in its own back yard. LG has announced that it has has sold 1 million units of the LG Optimus Vu in South Korea. With a 5 inch screen (as opposed to the 5.5 inch panel on the Samsung GALAXY Note II), what really makes LG's offering different is the 4:3 aspect ratio which makes the screen somewhat boxy and and the device hard to hold.

We should add that while both the Samsung GALAXY Note II and the LG Optimus Vu both sold 1 million units in South Korea, Samsung accomplished the feat in 90 days while it took LG three times as long. And it would seem that LG is combining sales of both its LG Optimus Vu and LG Optimus Vu II units to reach the 1 million mark. That would seem to muddy the comparison with Samsung's model.
