Google Glass hackathon in pictures: geeks get coding on headgear of the future

Google Glass hackathon in pictures geeks galore in

You might remember that Google decided to host a little get together with those lucky "explorers" that pre-ordered Glass. Well, no one is allowed to tell us a darn thing about what went down thanks to those pesky NDAs the devs were required to sign. But, the folks at Mountain View didn't want us to feel completely left out, so they posted a bunch of pictures from the hackathons so we could get a glimpse at what it's like to be granted early access. Predictably, what you get is a bunch of geeks wearing computers while typing on computers. In total the "pioneers" built 80 new ways to use Glass, at least one of which we're sure involved viewing pornography (that's a right of passage for all new tech), and eight winning teams picked up the grand prize -- Google footing the bill for their Explorer Edition headset. We've got one more image after the break, but you can peruse the entire gallery at the source link.

CES 2013: In pictures: Samsung S9 UHD 4K TV

In pictures: Samsung S9 UHD 4K TVSamsung brings ultra to high def

Samsung revealed its latest TV upgrade at CES 2013 this week, the ultra high-definition S9 UHD. This 4K Ultra High Definition television packs in a whole host of new features, all within a chassis that's different to pretty much all televisions on the market.

You can choose from a 85-inch or 110-inch screen – unfortunately, those living in flats may have to pass on this one – and the panels come with a frame that's been shaped like an artist's easel. This gives the television something of a lean-back look, which is eye-catching but probably not to everyone's tastes.

Samsung believes in its design, though, saying the "timeless, premium design of the S9 raises the standards of luxury television design"

The TV does appear to be floating within its frame which is quite a feat, considering the size of the thing.

Given that there isn't too much 4K content around, the Samsung S9 has a proprietary up-scaling engine can that can up-convert HD or Full-HD to UHD-level picture quality.

This is coupled with Samsung's Precision Black Pro technology, LED dimming and a "high" contrast ratio.

Inside the easel-like frame is a decent sound system for the S9 UHD. This comprises a three-way 2.2 channels of 120 watt sound, which is equivalent to six times better sound than a typical TV. Well, that's what Samsung is saying and until we get into our labs we will have to believe it.

The S9 UHD also comes with the same quad-core chip that's in its top-end 2013 series of LED TVs – this will be updatable in the future too, thanks to the company's Smart Evolution chip upgrade kit. With the current quad-core you get the new Smart Hub with S-Recommendation, enhanced Voice Interaction and Gesture Control, as well as apps and social features.

There's no Samsung S9 UHD release date or pricing as of yet, but we will be getting a closer look at the television this week so stay tuned for more information.

These Polaroids Might Be the Oldest Pictures of an Apple Computer

This story will display in ...Nov 24, 2012 12:02 PM

These Polaroids Might Be the Oldest Pictures of an Apple Computer In 1976, Apple products were far from the thin, glossy blades they are today. Apple's humble beginnings started with the Apple I, hand-built by Steve Wozniak himself, and sold for $666.66. When Paul Terrell, owner of the Byte Shop, purchased 50 of the machines for sale way back then, he took a few pictures with his Polaroid camera. Now, those pictures are quite possibly the oldest pictures ever taken of an Apple product.

Terrell recently posted some of the pictures to Facebook, and they about as chock full of tech nostalgia as pictures can be. Featuring shots of the computer's innards as well as shots of it in working order, the pictures are a sight to see, and must be even more of a joy to actual hold. You can see all of them over on the Technologizer. [TIME]
