Google's new Places for Business app lets you verify and update listings on your iPhone

Google's new Places for Business app lets you verify and update your listing on your iPhone

When you run your own business, time is money and sometimes you don't have the excess minutes to return to your PC and tweak your Google Place Google+ Local listing, right? Fortunately, if you're carrying an iPhone in your pocket and have Google's new Places for Business app, you can adjust those opening times, verify your establishment (and more) on the go. Other features include web traffic tracking, plus the ability to beautify your Google+ listing with fresh images and handle multiple branches from one place. Google's latest business-facing software is available to US-based business owners on iTunes -- it's Apple-only for now.

Foursquare for Android now makes it easier to find friends, places nearby

Foursquare for Android now makes it easier to find friends, places nearby

It's safe to say the Android folk account for a pretty good chunk of Foursquare's hefty user base, so it's only logical for the social firm to often bring more and more new features to the highly-rated app. As such, today Foursquare announced it has added a few additional tidbits to its Android offering, including a couple which are bound to make it simpler for users of the service to find nearby spots and friends via the application's main map. What's more, Foursquare's moved the "To-Do List" feature over to the app's left drawer for easier access, while the essential "Check In" button also has a new home on that same side but toward the bottom corner. It's worth noting that despite the latest version being live right now, Foursquare says these changes will be rolling out "over the next few weeks" -- in other words, fret not if you're not seeing the novelties show up just yet, as they're sure to be coming very soon.

What were the most popular places to shoot an Instagram picture in 2012?

Forgetting for a moment the uproar that was created when Instagram briefly changed its ToS, and the subsequent class action suit that was filed, Instagram is a pretty popular app. Purchased last year by Facebook, Instagram had 30 million users on iOS alone in April. Once the Android app became available, 50 million new accounts were created for those using a device powered by Google's open source OS. That brought the total number of users to 100 million, a number that is certainly much larger now. Now that Instagram is about to close out 2012 as a well-known name ("Twitter is stupid and Instagram is Twitter for people who can't read," quips Kat Denning's Max on CBS' hit comedy 2 Broke Girls), the site has released a Top Ten list of the most photographed places on Instagram this year. With more than 100,000 pictures at the location, the Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok, Thailand was on top. This includes self-portraits, group shots, pictures of statutes and architecture.

Another Thailand spot was second, the Siam Paragon shopping mall in Bangkok. A more familiar name-Disneyland-was third, while New York City's Times Square was fourth. In fifth was AT&T Park in San Francisco, home of the World Champion San Francisco Giants. Winning the titile for the second time in three years certainly brought millions of fans to the stadium this past season.

In sixth place was Los Angeles International Airport (the famous LAX). Speaking of  L.A., Diodger Stadium was next. The iconic Eiffel Tower in Paris was eighth while Staples Center in L.A. was ninth. Rounding out the list is another Los Angeles landmark, the Santa Monica pier.

How many of the Top Ten locations did you snap an Instagram picture from in 2012?

Remains of the Day: Places of interest

Dan Moren Follow @dmoren

Dan has been writing about all things Apple since 2006, when he first started contributing to the MacUser blog. Since then he's covered most of the company's major product releases and reviewed every major revision of iOS. In his "copious" free time, he's usually grinding away on a novel or two.

It’s a globetrotting sort of day: Rumors say Apple is turning on Apple TV tests in China, even as Oregon and New York battle out what may be Apple’s first U.S. manufacturing facility. Elsewhere, Apple lays down roots in Texas and we get some quality Time with Tim Cook. The remainders for Wednesday, December 19, 2012 are going places.

Apple TV tests underway at Hon Hai (Central News Agency)

Is Apple partner Hon Hai ramping up tests of the Apple TV? So a source tells Taiwan’s Central News Agency. Then again, the source also says that “new Apple TV-related products might be put on display at … CES” which suggests to me that this guy is talking out of his, er, HDMI port.

Oregon courts mysterious ‘Project Azalea,’ said to be a massive chip factory (The Oregonian)

Oregon and New York are both contending for a mysterious project codenamed “Azalea,” which some believe to be Apple’s U.S. manufacturing plans. Clearly, though, if it were actually an Apple project it would be codenamed something decidedly more feline: Project Don’t Eat the Poinsettias, They’re Toxic or something.

Apple Breaks Ground on 1-Million-Square-Foot Texas Outpost (Wired)

Speaking of Apple-related construction, the company’s now broken ground on a 1 million square foot campus in Austin, Texas. That’s a lot of potential employment opportunities for Austin’s most disadvantaged social class, the hipster.

Runner-Up: Tim Cook, the Technologist (Time)

Though Apple CEO Tim Cook lost out to some dude named Barack Obama for Time’s annual honors, he does get a nice profile in the magazine: “He doesn’t look like Jobs, he looks like something Jobs would have made. Cook’s flawless cap of white hair could have been designed by Jony Ive and fabricated in China out of brushed aluminum.”

Hey, wait a second! Jony Ive jokes are my territory! Back off, Time!
