Facebook's paid messaging experiment lets you harass celebrities for a premium

Facebooks paid messaging experiment lets you harass strangers, celebrities for a premium

Remember the Facebook experiment that'd let you pay to send messages to strangers inboxes? According to several reputable sources, not only will you be able to inflict your opinions on members of the general public, but for a premium you'll also be able to abuse celebrities. According to The Sunday Times, figures such as Michael Rosen, Tom Daley and Salman Rushdie can all be reached if you splash out around £10.68 ($16) -- with the fees on a sliding scale based on how many followers they have. According to prolific twitterer Rosen, he wasn't asked about being charged for access, and won't receive a penny of the paid fan mail. In an effort to test it out, we sent a cheery Monday morning missive to Snoop Dogg Snoop Lion, who is meant to be on the price list, but strangely we weren't charged a penny -- so we're not sure how far this has been rolled out. Either way, that's a tenner saved right there.

Microsoft talks plans for premium content production, details Xbox 360's transition to an 'entertainment console'

Xbox Execs Talk Momentum and the Future of TV
Feb. 11, 2013
At the D: Dive into Media conference, Microsoft's Yusuf Mehdi and Nancy Tellem discuss Xbox entertainment growth and strategy.

REDMOND, Wash. – Feb. 11, 2013 - Living room entertainment is in its largest evolutionary period since the transitions of black-and-white to color, and from standard definition to high definition. The Xbox 360, alongside Microsoft's entertainment industry partners, is at the forefront of that evolution as one of the only devices that brings all forms of entertainment together in one device, while making access to content easy and providing new ways to interact with existing programming. In 2012, the amount of TV and other entertainment offerings on Xbox almost tripled, now surpassing 100 custom, voice-controlled TV and entertainment apps on Xbox LIVE.

Snapshot of Xbox Momentum

New data illustrates how entertainment usage on the Xbox has exploded during its living room transformation.

"Yes, we started with video games, but we have been on a journey to make Xbox the center of every household's entertainment," says Yusuf Mehdi, corporate vice president of Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business.

Today Mehdi, along with Nancy Tellem, president of entertainment and digital media at Microsoft, participated in a D: Dive into Media session, facilitated by Peter Kafka, to discuss that journey and the opportunities that lie ahead. Mehdi revealed some new data that illustrates how entertainment usage on the Xbox has exploded during its living room transformation, and Tellem shared more about her newly created Los Angeles-based Xbox Entertainment Studios.

Today, there are more than 76 million Xbox 360 consoles around the world. That's three times the number of original Xbox consoles sold. And a Kinect sensor now sits next to roughly one third of those Xbox 360 consoles; the company has sold 24 million Kinect sensors since launch.

Social has been an important part of Xbox from the beginning, and that's true today more than ever. The Xbox LIVE community has grown to 46 million members, a 15 percent growth since last year.

2012 also marked the Xbox's biggest year for entertainment and games usage. Users enjoyed more than 18 billion hours of entertainment in 2012, with entertainment app usage growing 57 percent year over year globally. Last year in the United States, Xbox LIVE Gold members averaged 87 hours per month on Xbox, an increase of 10 percent year over year.

Those numbers strongly indicate that consumers enjoy all kinds of entertainment via Xbox, and Mehdi believes the future of entertainment is even brighter, as Microsoft plans to keep the momentum rolling.

"We believe that Xbox is being used by more people in the household, during more hours in the day and for more forms of entertainment," he says. "People are using Xbox in the morning to work out with the Kinect Nike+ Fitness program, kids are watching cartoons, families are enjoying movies, and of course people are playing blockbuster games like 'Halo 4.'"

The Future of TV Is Interactive and More Engaging

According to Mehdi, Xbox has something in the living room no one else has – a large installed base of devices already in the home, connected to TVs, and over half of those are already linked together, delivering amazing personalized and social entertainment experiences via the Xbox LIVE network.

Microsoft believes that the future of TV and entertainment is one where the TV becomes interactive and more engaging, Mehdi and Tellem explain. Microsoft sees that viewers want to do more with their TV shows, movies, sports and other forms of entertainment.

"We believe that we are at the start of the next wave of truly interactive entertainment," Tellem says.

Tellem is spearheading a new L.A.-based studio called Xbox Entertainment Studios, where the mission is to create true interactive content for Xbox and other devices that will change the way entertainment content is experienced and delivered. Tellem also now oversees live event programming for Xbox LIVE. Xbox has had success with live events such as the Elections 2012 Hub on Xbox LIVE, which aired the presidential debates with an added interactive polling capability. Viewers submitted 3 million answers to on-screen questions during the live telecast of one of the debates. More recently, Xbox aired an interactive red carpet experience for this year's Grammy Awards and will be doing the same for the 85th Academy Awards.

Nancy Tellem
February 11, 2013
Nancy Tellem, former president of CBS Network Television Entertainment Group, has joined Microsoft as Entertainment & Digital Media president.
"When I worked in traditional TV, we would find ourselves saying things like 'Wouldn't it be cool if we could add an interactive aspect directly into the show and engage directly with the viewers?'" says Tellem. "With Xbox, that is possible today."

Xbox already offers content such Kinect Sesame Street TV, which blurs the lines between traditional linear TV show and interactive experience, where a kid can jump into their beloved Sesame Street and throw coconuts at Grover.

But it's not just about new types of entertainment; it's also about new business models and new engagement opportunities for advertisers. Mehdi called the launch of NUads – a new ad format that harnesses Kinect and natural user interface – an important moment for TV advertising. NUads deliver what is most scarce to advertisers today: consumer engagement. NUads enable natural interactivity using the simplicity of a spoken word or the wave of a hand. The first wave of NUads, which launched last fall with interactive polling, saw a record level of consumer engagement with 37 percent of people responding. With this model, passive TV advertising is transformed into engaging and actionable experiences.

Pioneering the Future of TV

In addition to Xbox Entertainment Studios creating content that will highlight what's possible and demonstrate the capability of the Xbox platform, Microsoft will continue to partner with content creators, networks, aggregators and advertisers to "pioneer the future of TV," says Tellem.

During 2013, Microsoft is planning to launch more than 40 new voice-controlled, customized TV and entertainment apps on Xbox.

"We want to partner with the industry to bring entertainment into a new era," she says. "It's an era when interactive entertainment becomes the greatest form of all entertainment – and we couldn't be more excited to play a part in it."

Switched On: PixelSense without the premium

Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology.

DNP Switched On PixelSense without the premium

Amid all the origami variations of the PC at CES this year -- things that swiveled, folded, docked and rotated around their hinges -- one of the more intriguing form factor variations came not from a twist on the classic clamshell, insurgent slate or a hybrid of the two. Rather, it was a variation of the desktop via the all-in-one, one of the few of that embryonic breed known as table PCs courtesy of the Lenovo IdeaCentre Horizon.

Table PCs entered a broader collective consciousness in 2007 when Microsoft introduced Surface (a name it would later repurpose for its tablet line). A chunky, waist-high device that married a Windows PC with a 30-inch projection display and five embedded cameras, the original Surface offered an integrated multi-touch experience without a touchscreen.

Surface was capable of interaction with other devices that seemed magical, especially without using NFC. Place a marked glass on top of it and it could tell you the ingredients in the cocktail it contained. Place a WiFi-enabled camera on it and the photos would appear to spill out onto the screen, ready to be freely flipped, rotated, stretched and easily converted into emails via a simple postcard creation feature.

Alas, at about $10,000 and with most consumers already having a coffee table, Surface was too pricey for consumers. Mocked as a "big-ass table" in a parody video, it was relegated to a few hotels, casinos, AT&T stores and other public places. Prior to the release of the Surface tablet, Microsoft recreated the table-based incarnation using flat-panel technology. Samsung offers that product as the 40-inch SUR40 with Microsoft PixelSense. With a street price of about $8,000, it retains the ability to handle more than 50 touch points and interact with real-world objects.

DNP Switched On PixelSense without the premium

Starting at around $1,699, though, the Lenovo IdeaCentre Horizon promises to deliver much of the Surface experience at a consumer price. Unlike the original Surface, it is practical to use as a regular Windows 8 all-in-one desktop. Snap in the stand and lay it flat, though, and you can take advantage of a Lenovo app store that includes optimized games and other media-centric apps for the device. They are very much in the spirit of those early Surface apps.

Moving to a device the size of the Horizon forces one to give up the kind of orientation features one takes for granted in today's smartphones and tablets.

A good example of how this works is with the classic board game Monopoly, an engaging version of which has been created for the iPad. But putting that same experience on the Horizon really opens it up to multiplayer interaction in a way that the tablet-driven experience cannot. You can see the whole board during everyone's turns. Air hockey comes closer to approximating the actual experience (although there was some controller lag in the version shown at CES).

Just as the iPad's larger palette enabled experiences that were either inferior or impossible on the iPhone, the same can be said for Horizon versus the iPad. This is especially true for multiuser experiences, a novelty in the realm of personal touch devices. That said, moving to a device the size of the Horizon forces one to give up the kind of orientation features one takes for granted in today's smartphones and tablets. With Horizon you don't rotate the tablet; you rotate around it.

Horizon is not the first time Lenovo has been led down the sometimes challenging path of creating its own app store; it rolled its own for TV apps when it introduced its Android-based smart TV (not available in the US) at last year's CES. Indeed, yet another challenge that 2007's Surface faced was competing for developer mindshare with Apple's iPhone. But just as modern Windows 8 dockable tablets or convertibles reduce risk for the PC manufacturer by serving as a PC as well as a tablet, Lenovo can fall back on the Horizon's use as a large all-in-one with normal viewing angles and keyboard input if optimized apps don't take off. It's low table stakes for a table PC.

Original Galaxy Note getting Jelly Bean, multi-window and other features in new Premium Suite

Android CentralBack in the spring the original Samsung Galaxy Note got Android 4.0 and new TouchWiz apps as part of the phone’s first “premium suite” software upgrade. Today, Samsung has confirmed that a second premium suite will bring the OG Note right up to date with newer handsets like the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2.

A new entry on Samsung’s Galaxy Note micro-site confirms that along with an upgrade to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, the Note will get multi-window (full-screen multitasking), pop-up video/browser/note apps, photo note/photo frame, easy clip, paper artist, and new S Planner and email apps. That’s in addition to standard Jelly Bean features like Google Now and Project Butter.

Last month we reported on rumors that the original Galaxy Note was in line to receive such an upgrade. In the past month we've even seen leaked builds start to appear, suggesting the new firmware is close to being finalized.

There’s no information on when this new premium suite might arrive. However with Android 4.1.2 updates already rolling out for other devices, and major events like CES and MWC looming, we suspect Samsung won’t waste any time in rolling this update out to global Note models. Owners of the U.S.-specific versions may have to wait a little longer, as usual.

Galaxy Note Jelly Bean

Split-screen multi-tasking in the original Galaxy Note? Yes, please!

Original Galaxy Note owners no longer have to look at their Galaxy Note II brethren with envy, at least not as it pertains to software. That's because Samsung is allowing Galaxy Note owners to feast on Jelly Bean, as confirmed by an updated product page detailing the device's Premium Suite update. It's a pretty extensive update that brings with it many of the same tricks and features found on the Galaxy Note II, including dual-window multitasking, pop-up Notes, photo frames, an enhanced S Note, and more.

The multi-window feature is probably the most intriguing. After applying the update, Galaxy Note owners will be able to split the screen into two sections, allowing you to make more efficient use of all that screen real estate. And of course there's all the functionality that Android 4.1 Jelly Bean brings to the table, including better performance and the Google Now voice assistant software.

Samsung didn't say exactly when it will roll out the updated software, but with the product page facelift, we imagine it will be very soon.

As long as ROMs like Cyanogenmod exist, I don't need manufacturer updates. ;)

avatar boidsonly December 27, 2012 at 2:31pm

It is good to see Samsung treating its customer base with such gratitude-they realize the sale of just one phone is one less iphone sale.

After the way MS treated their Win 7 owners, I am surprised folks are buying the newer Win 8 phones; I know I never will own another MS phone. Write that down, MS, write that down...

My wife owns the SGSIII and she is looking forward to the rumored Premium Suite release for her device-another nice perk from Samsung.

avatar AETAaAS December 27, 2012 at 1:45pm

I do hope they launch the updates in a timely manner. The ICS update was rolled out quite slowly previously. It certainly took a few weeks or months (I can't remember clearly) between when the initial ICS updates launched in Germany and the last updates being released. UK phones certainly had to wait a while to get the update.

That said, it is great to see Samsung give us such a long update run (all the way from 2.3 Gingerbread) and the new features. :)

Samsung Galaxy S3 gets upgraded in UK with Premium Suite

Samsung Galaxy S3 gets upgraded in UK with Premium SuiteSuite, dude

Good news for anyone in the UK with a Samsung Galaxy S3 - there's a new software upgrade out right now.

Called Premium Suite, it brings some features previously found on the Galaxy Note 2 to your (only marginally smaller) S3.

New features include Multi-Windows Views, which lets you use two apps at once in separate windows, and Page Buddy, which loads your favourite tunes as soon as you plug in your earphones. Contextual Menu arranges apps by most used in the list menu, and Facebook Lock Ticker brings your Facebook feed to your lock screen, so you don't have to open the app.

But there's more. Paper Artist improves your images, while Low Light Shot helps when taking pictures in dimly lit environments. Best Face takes fizzogs from five different snaps to make one photo that's as close to perfect as it's going to get.

Easy Mode, meanwhile, helps aid the transition from a regular feature phone to a smartphone, so is ideal for first-time Galaxy S3 owners. And Sound Balance lets you pick one audio channel over another when using headphones.

In all, there are 14 new features in Premium Suite. Let us know what you make of them in the comments.

DNP Evernote Clearly offers texttospeech to its Premium portfolio

If you ever wanted to catch up on your online reading while on the treadmill or puttering about the kitchen, Evernote now offers you the ability to do so without actually, well, reading. The online brain dump has introduced text-to-speech functionality to its Clearly extension for Google Chrome, a plugin that clears out ads and other distractions for a clean reading experience. While the Clearly extension itself is free, the text-to-speech feature is only for Premium accounts, each of which costs $5 a month or $45 a year. Words are highlighted as they're read, and you can pause and skip as you like. The feature launches with support for over twelve languages and is powered by iSpeech, which has worked with BlackBerry apps and connected homes in the past. Just don't accidentally blast TMZ articles during your next conference call, ok?
