Qualcomm Q1 2013 earnings: $1.91 billion in profit on revenues of $6 billion

The folks in San Diego are making it rain once again, as Qualcomm has just announced its earnings for the quarter with $6 billion in revenues, which represents a 29 percent year-over-year increase and a new record for the firm. It seems the company's Snapdragon chips are everywhere you look these days, and it should come as no surprise that Qualcomm also hauled in a profit of $1.91 billion, which is a 36 percent hike over the previous year. Seeing that the company is so well off, it's also announced a cash dividend payment of $428 million that will go back to shareholders, along with stock repurchases in the amount of $250 million. In case you were wondering, Qualcomm managed to push 182 million of its SoC's out the door during Q1, which represents a 17 percent year-over-year increase. With the Snapdragon 800 due by mid-year, we've a feeling that it'll keep raining in San Diego for some time -- even if the nice weather says otherwise.

CES 2013: Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 and 600 give clues on smartphones to come

Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 and 600 give clues on smartphones to comeQualcomm - snappy

Not to be outdone by Nvidia's new Tegra 4 processor, Qualcomm has unveiled its latest high-end mobile-friendly chipsets at CES 2013, with the Snapdragon 800 promising to bring UHD video and mind-boggling battery performance to phones and computers later this year.

Qualcomm says that the high-end Snapdragon 800 will deliver 75 per cent better battery performance than the current top-end S4 Pro.

It's all thanks to the move to the 28nm manufacturing process coupled with a new Krait 400 CPU quad configuration that brings better performance per watt of power.

Qualcomm's also managed to fit asynchronous SMP architecture in, which ekes the best possible performance from each core without needing specialist cores.

So, in short, lots of power saving moves being made. That doesn't mean the processors will skimp on nifty new tricks though; the Snapdragon 800 chip will allow phones to record and play back Ultra High Def 4K video, as well as improving still photography, global 4G/LTE with certain add-ons, multi-channel HD audio and allowing for higher-res displays (2560 x 2048).

Excitingly, Qualcomm reckons the Snapdragon 800s will be making their way to high-end devices and thus our pockets by the middle of 2013.

And it's not just intended for the top-end smartphones - the 800 processor is also designed for Smart TVs, tablets and digital media adapters.

Somewhat overshadowed by the 800 but still impressive is the new Snapdragon 600, intended for mid-to-high-end mobile devices and offering rich graphics and 40 per cent better battery performance than the S4 Processor that's around now.

It comes with a new Krait 300 quad-core CPU with speeds up to 1.9GHz, a speed-enhanced Adreno 320 GPU and support for LPDR3 memory.

The Snapdragon 600 should also hit phones sooner than the 800, expected by the second quarter of the year (April-June).

Steve Mollenkopf, Qualcomm's president and COO, said that the Snapdragon 600 and 800 already have "more than 50 design wins… secured" between them, so we could feasibly see some of the first devices on show at MWC 2013. We sure hope so.

LAS VEGAS | Tue Jan 8, 2013 12:37am EST

LAS VEGAS (Reuters) - Qualcomm Inc Chief Executive Paul Jacobs announced an improved smartphone chip and had help from guests ranging from Steve Ballmer and Big Bird to Maroon 5 during his opening keynote at the world's biggest technology conference.

Jacobs opened the annual Consumer Electronics Show on Monday with a "Born Mobile" theme, saying that as many as a million new smartphones are being added to mobile networks every day, roughly double the number of babies born daily.

CES, which attracts thousands of exhibitors and is expected to be attended by more than 150,000 people, is used by the industry each year to showcase upcoming products ranging from cellphones to giant televisions.

In the keynote, which was historically reserved for Microsoft Corp, Jacobs streamed a clip for an upcoming movie using his company's new chip Snapdragon 800. Qualcomm is the world's biggest maker of chips for cellphones.

He also showed how the chip, which will be available in the second half this year, would support mobile video games with a much greater level of detail than today's most powerful phones.

"This is console quality gaming on a mobile device," Jacobs said.

The Snapdragon 800 chip can also support recording and playback of ultra high-definition video, which has roughly four times the resolution of high-definition TV.

Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer said last year that CES 2012 would be his company's last time leading the show and exhibiting there as it no longer fitted with Microsoft's timeframe for product launches.

But Ballmer did join Jacobs on stage for part of the presentation, promoting phones based on the Microsoft Windows Phone 8 operating system.

Other guests during the keynote included Mexican film director Guillermo del Toro, who showed a clip of his new movie, and Sesame Street character Big Bird, who showed off an upcoming children's application called Big Bird's Words.

Pop rock band Maroon 5 ended the event by playing several hit songs including one called Payphone.

"I think that song should be called cellphone," quipped Jacobs before saying goodnight.
