FAA may ease 'reading device' restriction during takeoff and landing later this year

NYT FAA may announce reduced takeoff landing electronics restriction this year

By early 2014, passengers may be able to use certain electronic devices in airplane mode during takeoff and landing, according to a New York Times report. The publication's industry sources say that the Federal Aviation Administration may announce more lenient electronics policies later this year, allowing passengers to use "reading devices" during takeoff and landing -- while it's not clear which gadgets would qualify, cellphones would remain on the ban list. The FAA commissioned an industry group to study the issue of in-flight electronics use -- the team, which includes representatives from Amazon, Boeing, the CEA, FCC, and others, will announce the results of its study by July 31st.

The issue has support from key lawmakers as well. Senator Claire McCaskill is calling the FAA out on its authorization of pilots to use iPads in the cockpit and flight attendants to use devices of their own, while restricting passengers from reading books on e-readers -- "A flying copy of 'War and Peace' is more dangerous than a Kindle," she told the Times. And we'd have to agree. Until the FAA announces a policy revision, we all have no choice but to reluctantly comply with the ban, but with devices like Google Glass on the horizon, updated restrictions could not come too soon.

Lumio desk lamp takes light reading literally (video)

Image

With the future of reading heading squarely in the direction of electronic devices, what to do with the old timey book form? Build a lamp, of course. During a recent visit to the City by the Bay, we popped into the TechShop hackerspace and were introduced to Max Gunawan, the designer behind Lumio (not to be confused with a certain smartphone line of similar name). The product, developed in that very space, offers up a cool take on the desktop lamp, fitting it into a wooden, old timey-looking book form. Open it up and the pages fan out into what looks like a paper lantern.

It's an LED light powered by a lithium ion battery that'll give you around eight hours on a charge. Due to the foldable nature of the Lumio, the device is portable and can be opened into a number of configurations, to suit your needs. Gunawan is a couple of days away from launching a Kickstarter page for the project, in hopes of getting together $60,000. Interested funders will be able to pick one up for around $95 -- wait for it to come to market, and that price will jump to around $125 or $135.

After the break, check out a video of Gunawan giving us the lowdown on Lumio.Lumio desk lamp takes light reading a bit too seriouslySee all

Gizmodo's Winter Reading List

Gizmodo's Winter Reading ListWinter break is a time for video games and snoozing. But it's also a good time to get some reading done, or at least pretend like you're going to read all the books on those end-of-year lists. Here's what the Gizmodo staff is reading:

Leslie Horn: I need a book to read. What's everyone reading?

Peter Ha: Snow Crash

Eric Limer: Real nerdy but:

Fuck the movie, but World War Z is an awesome book I just reread.

Also John Hodgman's complete world knowledge trilogy: The Areas of my Expertise, More Information than You Require, and That Is All.

There's also this book called "Occupational Hazards" by Jonathan Segura that has the best use of profanity probably ever. And the MC works for a newspaper! How quaint!

Sam Biddle: The Stories of John Cheever

Brian Barrett: Reading Sweet Tooth now, and it's fine so far. Recently really enjoyed The Sisters Brothers.

Kyle Wagner: How I Became a Famous Novelist is a v funny satire novel. Quick read, nice for a plane. Circling back and finishing the Sepinwall TV book now.

Ashley Feinberg: In the middle of this right now, and it's fantastic: Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore: A Novel

Also, if you haven't before, you should read The Devil in the White City. Something tells me it's right up your alley.

Michael Hession: Gotham: a history of New York City to 1898

it's monumental, but good to pick away at.

Why Does the World Exist by Jim Holt.

just started it, but gets good reviews.

Harry Sawyers: Not exactly a new release any more, but Gary Shteyngart's latest, "Super Sad True Love Story," is fantastic.

Big Boi Reading How the Grinch Stole Christmas Is the Best

This story will display in ...Dec 24, 2012 3:00 PM

Big Boi Reading How the Grinch Stole Christmas Is the Best I love the How the Grinch Stole Christmas. My mother used to read it to us every year at Christmas. But you know who's cooler than my mom? The rapper Big Boi.

Therefore, this video of Sir Luscious Leftfoot aka Daddy Fat Sax aka is just fantastic. Watch it once. Watch it twice. Make it a family tradition. He just came out with a brand new album, he breeds dogs and he's reading classic children's Christmas tales. The man does it all.
