Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 3G arrives at the FCC, remains a really big phone

DNP 3G version of Samsung Galaxy Note 80 arrives at the FCC, remains a really big phone

Not long after we got our hands on the Galaxy Note 8.0 at Mobile World Congress, the 3G global version has finally made its way through the FCC for certification. We already saw the WiFi model come through in January, but this one has those all-important 800/1900 MHz 3G bands that'll have you web browsing with your stylus while you're out and about; as long as you have an activated SIM anyway. As a reminder, the Note 8.0 sports a 1.6GHz Exynos 4 Quad processor, WiFi a/b/g/n radios, 2GB of RAM, Bluetooth 4.0, A-GPS, GLONASS, Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean and a 4,600mAh battery. This is certainly not the one that'll be offered by stateside carriers however, as we'll get an LTE variant instead. Still, if you want an eight-inch tablet that also doubles as a phone, its FCC approval takes that dream one step closer to reality. In the meantime, feel free to hit up the documents at the source to suss out the information yourself.

Curiosity rover leaves safe mode, remains in Martian limbo

Curiosity rover leaves safe mode, remains in Martian limbo

The Curiosity rover has been in an especially precarious position since late last week, when a memory glitch forced it into a safe mode while NASA prepared a backup and diagnosed the trouble. We're glad to report that the worst is over. Scientists have confirmed that the rover left safe mode on later on Saturday and started using its high-gain antenna for communication a day later. However, it's not quite out of the woods yet -- if Mars had woods, that is. The backup is still taking on the information it needs to assume full responsibility, and NASA wants to evaluate the suitability of the one-time primary computer as the new backup. Nonetheless, all the early indicators point to Martian exploration going back on track within days.

DirecTV scores a batch of 4K TV trademarks, content remains a pie in the sky

DirecTV trademarks 4K TV channel names, but content is still a pie in the sky

Despite the flood of 4K TVs that are emerging this year, there won't be a lot of content to play on them in the near future short of space galleries and the World Cup. The team at DirecTV can't provide an immediate solution, but it's at least getting ahead of the curve with a spate of new trademarks. The satellite giant now owns trademarks for the terms 4K, 4KN, 4KNET, 4K Network and 4KNetwork, the lot of which would cover broadcasts, streaming and VOD -- all hinting that the company is at least toying with the prospect of a 4K-only channel or service. Don't get your hopes up, however. DirecTV has declined comment, and there's a big difference between securing a trademark and having the resources to do something with it. We'll have to wait for sufficient capacity on TV networks -- and in our wallets -- before 4K TV channels exist as more than names.

LG teases 'new series' of mobile phones with 'unexpected distinction,' remains indistinct

LG teases 'new series' of mobile phones, not much else

Offering up its Facebook fans a loving wrapped teaser image, LG Mobile reckons it's got something up its sleeve. On the social network entry, it notes that the new series will have an "unexpected distinction", which is hopefully more than just a baffling screen ratio. Will it be ready for MWC in a few weeks? Or will the company go the way of other smartphone makers and just launch whatever it has at its very own event? Who knows? LG does, that's who.

SHARP® GARNERS #1 SHARE IN LARGE SCREEN (60"+) CATEGORY IN 2012

More than Doubles Market Share on a Revenue Basis According to NPD Data

Mahwah, NJ, (January 28, 2013) – Sharp achieved the top U.S. market share in the 60"+ LED TV segment in 2012, according to The NPD Group's Retail Tracking Service. Fueled by an unmatched selection of large screen choices, picture quality performance and brand strength, Sharp more than doubled its market share between 2010 and 2012 (based on revenue share).

"The large screen market is a sweet spot right now for the TV industry," said Ben Arnold, Director of Industry Analysis at The NPD Group. "60"+ TV sales doubled in 2012 compared to 2011 and Sharp has top market share among U.S TV brands. This segment of the market is poised to grow even more in 2013."

Sharp offers the widest selection of 60" and larger LED TVs, including more than twenty 60" (diagonal) and above AQUOS LED televisions, including nine 60" class models, eight 70" class models, three 80" class models and the 90" class, the world's largest commercially available LED TV. This extensive lineup is tailored to meet the needs of virtually any large screen TV buyer, best positioning Sharp to meet the increasing consumer appetite for larger screens. In fact, Sharp's 60" class 6-Series AQUOS model (LC-60LE640U) was the number one selling large screen LED TV in 2012 on a revenue basis.

"Sharp is creating and leading the market for 60" and above LED TVs, making us the fastest growing brand in the industry," said John Herrington, President, Sharp Electronics Marketing Company of America. "In 2013, we will continue this momentum with an all-smart, all-LED, large screen Sharp AQUOS lineup that features more models with Quattron™ technology and striking new slim designs."

At CES 2013, Sharp unveiled its 2013 AQUOS large screen LED TV lineup, which will start rolling out in February. The all-smart, all-LED Sharp AQUOS large screen lineup will include 21 models in the 60" class or larger, more than half featuring Sharp's proprietary Quattron color technology.

Samsung gives its Series 3 Chromebox a facelift, hardware remains unchanged

DNP Samsung gives its Series 3 Chromebox a facelift

Keeping the Chrome OS party going, Samsung released an updated model of last year's Series 3 chromebox. Gracefully named the XE300M22-B01US, this cloud-based workstation features the same 1.9GHz Intel Celeron B849 processor, 4GB of RAM, six USB 2.0 ports and 16GB SSD as its predecessor. The only real change here is the system's appearance, which is now a sterile white plastic shell with a latch covering its front-facing inputs. The computer recently went on sale in the UK for 279 GBP ($453.50) with Samsung remaining mum on stateside release plans. However, if patience isn't your strong suit and you've gotta have this machine now, you can pick up last year's model (virtually the same hardware) for around $329 or less.

Remains of the Day: Places of interest

Dan Moren Follow @dmoren

Dan has been writing about all things Apple since 2006, when he first started contributing to the MacUser blog. Since then he's covered most of the company's major product releases and reviewed every major revision of iOS. In his "copious" free time, he's usually grinding away on a novel or two.
More by Dan Moren

It’s a globetrotting sort of day: Rumors say Apple is turning on Apple TV tests in China, even as Oregon and New York battle out what may be Apple’s first U.S. manufacturing facility. Elsewhere, Apple lays down roots in Texas and we get some quality Time with Tim Cook. The remainders for Wednesday, December 19, 2012 are going places.

Apple TV tests underway at Hon Hai (Central News Agency)

Is Apple partner Hon Hai ramping up tests of the Apple TV? So a source tells Taiwan’s Central News Agency. Then again, the source also says that “new Apple TV-related products might be put on display at … CES” which suggests to me that this guy is talking out of his, er, HDMI port.

Oregon courts mysterious ‘Project Azalea,’ said to be a massive chip factory (The Oregonian)

Oregon and New York are both contending for a mysterious project codenamed “Azalea,” which some believe to be Apple’s U.S. manufacturing plans. Clearly, though, if it were actually an Apple project it would be codenamed something decidedly more feline: Project Don’t Eat the Poinsettias, They’re Toxic or something.

Apple Breaks Ground on 1-Million-Square-Foot Texas Outpost (Wired)

Speaking of Apple-related construction, the company’s now broken ground on a 1 million square foot campus in Austin, Texas. That’s a lot of potential employment opportunities for Austin’s most disadvantaged social class, the hipster.

Runner-Up: Tim Cook, the Technologist (Time)

Though Apple CEO Tim Cook lost out to some dude named Barack Obama for Time’s annual honors, he does get a nice profile in the magazine: “He doesn’t look like Jobs, he looks like something Jobs would have made. Cook’s flawless cap of white hair could have been designed by Jony Ive and fabricated in China out of brushed aluminum.”

Hey, wait a second! Jony Ive jokes are my territory! Back off, Time!
