Upcoming Netflix family plan allows four simultaneous streams

Netflix recently announced some new family-oriented changes to the streaming service. In a quarterly letter to shareholders, CEO Reed Hastings and CFO David Wells noted the company intended to launch a new family plan that would allow up to four simultaneous streams for just $11.99 per month.

The plan will likely solve the conundrum affecting a number of families nationwide – who gets to use the service at any given time (or letting your buddies “borrow” your account credentials). The existing $7.99 plan only allows for two streams at the same time. With four simultaneous streams possible as part of the new plan, the only issue likely to arise is a lack of bandwidth with four concurrent streams on the same Internet connection.

Interestingly enough, Netflix anticipates that only one percent of existing customers will take advantage of the upcoming plan. It would seem that Netflix is pretty confident that the vast majority of their members are perfectly happy with the two stream limitation. Of course it’s also entirely possible that Netflix is hoping the family plan will lure new customers that have been weary of commitment due to existing limitations.

It’s not entirely clear when Netflix will roll out the new family plan but we do know it will be limited to the US when it does arrive. It’ll be interesting to see if other streaming media players like Hulu Plus follow in Netflix’s footsteps. At current, Hulu Plus allows for just one stream at a time.

Apple says iOS 6.1 Exchange bug will be zapped in 'upcoming release'

Apple says iOS 61 Exchange bug will be zapped in 'upcoming release'

Apple's iOS and Microsoft Exchange Server have been cronies for quite awhile now, but since iOS 6 there's been some issues. The latest rift is a version 6.1 recurring calendar event bug that causes "excessive communication" if you respond to an exception error. Cupertino's identified the problem and says a fix is incoming, though it didn't specify exactly when -- and iOS 6.1.1 just hit devices to fix network connectivity issues, so it may not be imminent. Meanwhile, Apple advises that you not respond to the exception and to disable, then enable any Exchange calendars that run amok -- which should keep you BYOD-ing in the interim.

Upcoming Nokia Lumia 920 firmware offers improved camera quality

Upcoming Nokia Lumia 920 firmware offers improved camera qualityNokia will soon give Lumia 920 users improved image quality

If you're a Lumia 920 owner who's been getting less than stunning image quality from Nokia's flagship Windows Phone 8 smartphone, an upcoming firmware update might be just what the doctor ordered.

Engadget reported Monday that Nokia is preparing a firmware update to address image softness in photos taken with its Lumia 920 handset, which will be rolled into a larger Microsoft update already announced.

The website managed to get its hands on two sets of identical photos: One taken with the current PR1.0 firmware, and another with the upcoming PR1.1 update.

The newer firmware appears to clearly fix fuzziness problems that have been plaguing Lumia 920 owners since its early November launch.

Nokia's PR1.1 firmware is expected to arrive alongside a larger Windows Phone 8 operating system update expected in December, which was already confirmed by Nokia's U.S. Twitter support team late last week.

That update will include the ability to decline calls via SMS along with improvements to web browsing, LTE and the overall stability of Windows Phone 8 devices.

While Engadget sources have confirmed the PR1.1 update, it may not be a cure-all, as white balance issues reportedly remain, even after the latest firmware.

Nokia did not respond to TechRadar's request for comment by the time this post was published.
