Facebook revenue at $1.46 billion in Q1 2013, active users on the rise

facebook, social network, earnings report, q1 20

Facebook's days as a public company have seen some serious ups and downs, with most of the news focusing on the down side. Today the company released its first quarter 2013 results, and overall, things are looking quite positive for the social networking giant, with a sizable increase in revenue and almost every other category.

In Q1 2013, Facebook generated $1.46 billion in revenue, compared to $1.06 billion in Q1 2012. This equates to a solid increase of 38-percent year over year. As much as $1.25 billion came from advertising, or 85% of the total, and 30% of ad revenue came from mobile ads.

To go along with the revenue increase, the company also spent substantially more money in Q1 2013. Facebook spent $1.08 billion during the quarter, up 60% from 2012. Facebook's earnings report cites "infrastructure expense and increased headcount" as the reason for the large increase in spending.

The social network also shows a large bump in the amount of active users over the last year. In 2013, Facebook saw 665 million active daily users worldwide, while it saw 526 million in Q1 2012. Mobile usage is also on the rise, with Facebook seeing 751 million users accessing the social network each month through smartphones and tablets. Meanwhile, Facebook-owned Instagram also saw healthy growth with more than 100 million active monthly users on the service.

All in all, Facebook ended up with a net income of $312 million and earnings of 12 cents per share.

The After Math: Intel's revenue billions, Android's active millions and a few new Earth-like planets

Welcome to The After Math, where we attempt to summarize this week's tech news through numbers, decimal places and percentages

The After Math Intel's revenue billions, finances from ten years ago and 15 million Android activations a day

As we scratch our head and puzzle over the almost-daily financial results for the last quarter, this week's missive takes a slightly sentimental look at how two tech companies were faring a decade earlier. Is it unfair to compare the yesteryear Nokia to Google? Possibly. But it was the same year that a certain Engadget regular claimed a best-selling album -- so it wasn't all bad. Toshiba also unveiled a new pin-sharp Ultrabook to stand up to Apple's Retina displays, and NASA continued the search for habitable planets.

Predicted pricing for touch-enabled laptops with Intel's Bay Trail processor: $200 to $300 Intel's revenue for Q1 2013: $12.6 billion Nokia's revenue for Q1 2013: $7.7 billion Nokia's revenue for Q1 2003: $7.38 billion Google's revenue for Q1 2003: $249 million Artist with the US' top-selling album of 2003: 50 Cent Price of donating via Google's One Today app: $1 Price Google paid for Utah's iProvo fiber network: $1 DNPThe After Math Intel's revenue billions, Android's active millions and a few new Earthlike planets

Price of Kohler's second-generation Numi Comfort Height toilet: $6,000 Record-setting reported number of illegal downloads of Game of Thrones season 3 premiere: 1 million-plus Number of KIRF headphones believed to have been sold by counterfeiter Michael Reeder: 400,000 Pixels per inch on Toshiba's new 13-inch KIRAbook: 221 Pixels per inch on last year's Toshiba Satellite U845: 112 Daily Android activations as of this week: 1.5 million Possibly habitable planets recently discovered by NASA's Kepler telescope: 3 Known planets in our solar system (not including dwarf planet Pluto): 8 Number of Sega's Pluto game consoles to make it to market: 0 Bezel size on Pantech's "zero bezel" Vega Iron: 2.4mm

Instagram tops 100 million active users per month: what policy uproar?

Instagram tops 100 million active users a month what terms of service uproar

Instagram started reporting its active user base in what many saw as an attempt to quell talk of an exodus following its terms of service debacle. It has a better reason to post hard numbers today, however: there's now a neat, tidy 100 million active Instagram users every month. The milestone suggests that another 10 million mobile photographers got hooked on square-shaped photography in about five weeks, and it implies that the Facebook-owned company isn't about to slow down just yet. Not that everyone is in a position to join the party, mind you.

Outlook.com exits preview with 60 million active users, Hotmail UI to be retired this summer

Outlook.com exits preview with 60 million active users, Hotmail UI to be retired this summer

It's been so long since Microsoft launched Outlook.com that we forgot it was technically in preview mode. Well, that ended today, at 12:01AM ET on the dot. The company just announced that the email service is no longer in beta, and that the site has racked up 60 million active users -- over a third of them Gmail converts. If you decide to join today, you'll be getting the same feature set announced last summer, just with a smoother, less glitchy experience (not that it was ever that buggy to begin with, if you ask us). To lure in even more users, Microsoft is planning on launching a massive advertising campaign, one that will include TV and radio spots (see one of them after the break), online ads and even posters in subway stations. Basically, the sort of heavy promotion Microsoft is already doing for Surface.

Regardless of how much success Microsoft has in converting Gmail loyalists, though, a lot more people are about to become acquainted with Outlook's clean UI: the company has said it plans to switch Hotmail users over to the Outlook interface by summertime. To be clear, Microsoft says it has no plans to shut down the hotmail.com domain, so your existing Hotmail email address is safe, and you don't even have to register for an Outlook.com addy if you don't want to. Additionally, all of your folders and settings will be preserved. It's just that you're soon going to have to say goodbye to the old Hotmail. Onward, we say.

Twitter notches more than 200 million active monthly users

Twitter notches more than 200 million active monthly users

Sure, Facebook may have scored one billion active monthly users earlier this fall, but Twitter has some celebrating to do as well -- albeit for a significantly smaller figure. Rather than commemorating the announcement with an awkward commercial comparing itself to furniture, Twitter sent out a solitary tweet stating that it now has more than 200 million monthly active users. We last checked in on the microblogging service's traction when it had 175 million registered users in 2010, and as of last summer it's said to be sitting pretty with more than 500 million in total. Costolo and Co. may not have numbers as enormous as Facebook, but these stats aren't exactly something to scoff at.
