Huawei has lost interest in US market for its network gear after inquiries

In recent months scrutiny has intensified over the involvement of Chinese companies in US networking infrastructure, and as a result Huawei announced it's through trying to crack the market. Financial Times quotes VP Eric Xu saying that it is "not interested in the US market anymore" after years of efforts to count US operators among its customers. Ranked as the world's #2 telecom equipment maker, it's now recalibrating sales expectations for the next few years down to $10 billion by 2017 from the $15 billion it projected in more optimistic times. Reuters reports Xu didn't answer questions about any expansion of its handset business, so while Europe may be looking forward to new phones, we doubt the A199 is coming over here.

The CW app brings full episodes streaming to Xbox 360 a day after they air

The CW app brings full episodes streaming to Xbox 360 a day after they air

The latest entertainment app to launch for the Xbox 360 comes from The CW (the relationship has now come full circle), bringing shows like Arrow, Supernatural and The Vampire Diaries to the console. Special to this offering is that it will stream full episodes the day after they air on network TV, and will not require users to verify a cable or satellite subscription. Xbox Live Gold is required, so it's not an entirely free pass to stream away. Still, for fans of the shows it's another way to watch and this Friday's Vampire Diaries episode will feature some exclusive second screen content available via SmartGlass. Not into The CW's teen-centric offerings? Beyond the just-launched Pizza Hut app, XBL Silver sports fans can enjoy a free weekend (25th - 28th) of access to ESPN, MLB.tv, UFC (the 7 pre-fight stories), NHL GameCenter and NBA Game Time. There's also the Hockey Night in Canada app, and an update for Hulu Plus that lets parents search for kids shows based on age group.

This weekend, several popular sports apps will be unlocked from Gold from April 25 – 28 for Xbox LIVE subscribers in the U.S. and Canada. This is a great opportunity for sports fans to give their current sports subscription packages the Xbox LIVE makeover. More details below.

Pizza Hut is launching the first-of-a-kind ordering app, allowing Xbox LIVE members in the U.S. to purchase pizza, wings, pasta and more from Xbox 360. The full menu, including new products, can be ordered from the Xbox LIVE dashboard and operated using an Xbox 360 controller or hand gestures and voices commands via Kinect for Xbox 360.

CBC's Hockey Night in Canada keeps you connected to the game you love with Xbox.* Watch live games and stay up-to-date with special in-game features designed especially for you. Graphics chip designer Raja Koduri heads back to AMD after four-year stint at Apple

Image

Well, it looks like AMD had a bit of news up its sleeve that it chose not to drop during its earnings call yesterday. The Wall Street Journal has confirmed that famed graphics chip designer Raja Koduri is heading back to the company, which he left in 2009 to take on the graphics CTO role at Apple. Presumably, Koduri will again be performing some similar duties at AMD, but the company isn't offering any further details just yet apart from saying that it's "very pleased" about the move.

The After Math: Intel's revenue billions, Android's active millions and a few new Earth-like planets

Welcome to The After Math, where we attempt to summarize this week's tech news through numbers, decimal places and percentages

The After Math Intel's revenue billions, finances from ten years ago and 15 million Android activations a day

As we scratch our head and puzzle over the almost-daily financial results for the last quarter, this week's missive takes a slightly sentimental look at how two tech companies were faring a decade earlier. Is it unfair to compare the yesteryear Nokia to Google? Possibly. But it was the same year that a certain Engadget regular claimed a best-selling album -- so it wasn't all bad. Toshiba also unveiled a new pin-sharp Ultrabook to stand up to Apple's Retina displays, and NASA continued the search for habitable planets.

Predicted pricing for touch-enabled laptops with Intel's Bay Trail processor: $200 to $300 Intel's revenue for Q1 2013: $12.6 billion Nokia's revenue for Q1 2013: $7.7 billion Nokia's revenue for Q1 2003: $7.38 billion Google's revenue for Q1 2003: $249 million Artist with the US' top-selling album of 2003: 50 Cent Price of donating via Google's One Today app: $1 Price Google paid for Utah's iProvo fiber network: $1 DNPThe After Math Intel's revenue billions, Android's active millions and a few new Earthlike planets

The After Math: beer, lasers and $5K 4K TVs

Welcome to The After Math, where we attempt to summarize this week's tech news through numbers, decimal places and percentages

The After Math Samsung's literal Mega phone, lasers and 4K TVs for $4K

In a bid to neatly wrap up this week's events, we gaze at some high-priced 4K gear at NAB 2013, figure out whether we can physically... pocket either of Samsung's Galaxy Mega variants and think about lasers: sometimes beautiful, sometimes deadly and sometimes fighting the future war against drones. We've got the numbers -- and a few dollar signs -- right after the break.

Pricing for Blackmagic's 4K Production Camera: $3,995 Starting price for Sony's 55-inch 4K TV, coming later this month: $5,000 Advertised price of a 12-inch RCA television in 1939: $600 That price adjusted for inflation today: $10,022 Number of grip patterns on Touch Bionics' new prosthetic hand: 24 Number of bones in the human hand: 27 Screen size, in inches, of Samsung's biggest Galaxy Mega: 6.3 Screen size, in inches, of the Galaxy Pocket Neo: 3 Screen size, in inches, of the BlackBerry 6200: 2.6 Percentage of drop-off in PC shipments for Q1 2013, according to IDC: 13.9 Yearly percentage of growth in PC market in 1994, according to IDC: 27 Number of Roku devices sold so far in the US: 5 million Most minutes streamed by one Roku player in a week: 10,080 Minutes wasted by Engadget editors watching Heineken's interactive beer bottle concept: [redacted]

Google's Inactive Account Manager secures your digital existence after you kick the bucket

Google's Inactive Account Manager secures your digital existence when you no longer roam the Earth

If you're worried about what will happen to your mounds of digital data when you pass away, Google has just announced a feature for keeping said libraries secure. The outfit's Inactive Account Manager allows users to set time out periods of three, six, nine or 12 months for inactivity before deleting all of the stored files or having them handed over to a family member or "trusted contact." Those still left roaming the Earth can be granted access to Blogger, Drive, Gmail, Google+ and more without an application process, or they can simply be notified of the situation. Before any predetermined action is taken, the system will beam out a text and an email -- so if you're still around, you can halt matters from progressing further. Set up that digital will via the source links below and or by accessing the Google Account settings page.

PBS shows how hacking is reclaiming its good name after a bad rap (video)

PBS explains how hacking got a bad rap and is reclaiming its good name video

Hacking is still a loaded concept for many, often conjuring negative images of corporate espionage, fraudsters and prank-minded script kiddies. PBS' Off Book wants to remind us that hacking wasn't always seen this way -- and, thanks to modern developments, is mending its reputation. Its latest episode shows that hacking began simply as a desire to advance devices and software beyond their original roles, but was co-opted by a sometimes misunderstanding press that associated the word only with malicious intrusions. Today, hacking has regained more of its original meaning: hackathons, a resurgence of DIY culture and digital protests prove that hacks can improve our gadgets, our security and even our political landscape. We still have a long way to go before we completely escape movie stereotypes, but the mini-documentary may offer food for thought the next time you're installing a custom ROM or building your own VR helmet.

Swedish Language Council drops 'ungoogleable' from new word list after legal pressure from Google

Sweden drops 'ungoogleable' from new word list following legal pressure from Google

The Swedish Language Council appeared on Google's radar when it wanted to add the term ungoogleable (in Swedish, ogooglebar -- yep) to a list of new words. The company didn't want the word nixed, but redefined to reference Google directly and not just any general search engine -- this was the initial meaning of the term. Lawyers got involved, but instead of battling in court, the Language council decided to drop the addition entirely, not due to the objection but to bring more input to the process and avoid any legal time (and money) being wasted. The head of the council, Ann Cederberg said that "it's our use that gives it meaning -- not a multinational company exerting pressure." For now, at least, it looks like the definition is headed in the same direction of the one-time home of the Swedish Chef translator.

Some Pebble smartwatches bricking after shutdown, company replacing faulty units

It appears that Pebble's smartwatch is officially feeling its largest growing pain since debuting just two months ago. A five-page long (and growing) thread on the company's forum has some owners describing a bug that's leaving their Pebbles pebbled bricked after shutdown. Pebble's Eric Migicovsky let us know that the company is actively replacing affected units, while examining those being sent in to find out the root cause:

We've had reports of this issue, and we understand of course that it's annoying for users. We're replacing any Pebbles for users who report this issue. We're reviewing the Pebbles that get returned, working to get to the bottom of the issue. We have our support team ready to follow up to any user that reports this issue.

As it stands, there's no word on whether firmware update 1.9 has any role in keeping the devices from turning on after being shut down. Owners have further reported that no amount of charging their Pebble will help it to actually come back to life. We've reached out to the company for more info on the matter (including nailing down how many units the company has replaced so far), and we'll be sure to keep you updated. For now, let us know whether your experience with Pebble has been rocky at all so far.

Update: That was fast -- apparently Pebble has received about 30 reports of this issue since Friday. Here's the official word from Migicovsky:

We're tracking a few reports of this issue. Up to Friday, we've had 20-30 reports (out of 30,000+ pebbles in the field). We've gotten several back to the office, and we're getting to the bottom of it.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

(Nasdaq: NFLX) and Fox Television Studios (FTVS) today announced Season 3 of fan favorite The Killing, which premieres on AMC in 2013, will be available exclusively for streaming members after its airing in the U.S. In the U.S. and Canada, the deal brings Season 3 to Netflix members three months after the season finale airs on AMC. Over the next few months, members in all 40 countries where Netflix is available will be able to enjoy Seasons 1 and 2 of The Killing, prior to the Season 3 launch.

"We're excited to see The Killing back on TV and we're especially proud to bring Season 3 to our members so soon after it premieres on AMC," said Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer, Netflix. "The Killing is a terrific serialized drama and we know our members love these high-quality shows."

David Madden, president of Fox Television Studios, said, "Our agreement with Netflix played an extremely significant part in the studio's strategy that enabled us to bring The Killing back for a third season. Our showrunner, Veena Sud, has plunged our principals into new and dangerous worlds, with wicked twists and a climactic end-of-season resolution, and our acclaimed cast, including Mireille Enos, Joel Kinnaman and new cast member Peter Sarsgaard, are already thrillingly bringing it to life. We are delighted to be in business with Netflix to deliver Season 3, as well as past seasons of The Killing to a broader audience worldwide."

The critically acclaimed drama, based on the Danish series Forbrydelsen, follows various murder investigations led by homicide detectives "Sarah Linden" (Mireille Enos) and "Stephen Holder" (Joel Kinnaman). After the close of the "Rosie Larsen case," covered over the first two seasons of the series, Season 3 picks up one year later, with Linden no longer a detective. When ex-partner Holder's search for a runaway girl leads him to discover a gruesome string of murders that connects to a previous murder investigation by Linden, she is drawn back into the life she thought she'd left behind.

Earth's largest telescope gets to work in Chile after 30 years of planning

Earth's largest telescope opens after 30 years of planning, powered by a Fujitsu supercomputer

Nestled within the Chilean Andes, the new Atacama Large Millimeter-submillimeter Array (ALMA) is now open for space-staring business. The biggest, most complex telescope project to date, ALMA will be able to peer into the deeper reaches of space with "unprecedented power", according to astronomer Chris Hadfield. Covering around half of the universe's light spectrum, between infrared and radio waves, the new telescope should be able to detect distant planets, black holes and other intergalactic notables.

The Chilean desert's lack of humidity was a big reason for the telescope's placement, 16,400 feet above sea-level, aiding precision of the scope. But it's a global project, with the US contributing $500 million and making it the NSF's biggest investment ever. From Japan, Fujitsu's contribution to exploring the final frontier consists of 35 PRIMERGY x86 servers, tied together with a dedicated (astronomy-centric) computational unit. The supercomputer will process 512 billion telescope samples per second, which ought to be more than enough to unlock a few more secrets of the cosmos.

Paid apps return to Google Play in Taiwan after 18 months of legal wrangling

Paid apps return to Google Play in Taiwan

Android users living in Taiwan have something to celebrate: paid apps have returned to the Google Play store. The ability to purchase apps from the Taiwanese Play store was suspended over a year and a half ago when Google entered a legal battle with the local government. The issue? Taiwan's consumer protection laws demanded paid apps include a seven day trial period, but the Google Play refund period lasts only 15 minutes. Mountain View pulled paid apps from the region while it filed appeals and lawsuits with the local government, which eventually won it the right to handle returns and trials as it saw fit. Taiwanese users can now view Google Play's Top Paid apps page and actually purchases a few, too. Worth 20 months of waiting? We think so.

Livescribe renames Sky smartpen after losing trademark dispute with BSkyB

Joint statement from BSkyB and Livescribe

15th February 2013

British Sky Broadcasting Group plc ("Sky") and Livescribe, Inc. ("Livescribe") have today announced the settlement of trade mark infringement proceedings in the European Union brought by Sky against Livescribe in the English High Court in relation to the sale in the EU of a range of wireless smartpens under the trade mark Sky.

In the settlement, Livescribe has accepted judgment against it in respect of infringement of Sky's trade mark rights and has undertaken to respect Sky's trade mark rights in the Sky brand. Livescribe will rebrand the product as the "Livescribe wifi smartpen" with effect from 1 March 2013 and has recalled a quantity of stock bearing the Sky trade mark. To mitigate against disruption to Livescribe's business, Sky has agreed to allow Livescribe limited rights to sell-off existing stock already in the market in the EU, prior to the rebrand.

Sky said: "We are pleased to have reached a settlement with Livescribe after Livescribe agreed not to contest Sky's court action. We will remain vigilant in protecting the Sky brand and will continue to take appropriate action against those companies who seek to use our trade mark without consent."

Livescribe said: "While Livescribe does not offer any goods or services similar to those of Sky and had no intention of infringing Sky's rights, Livescribe is pleased to reach a settlement with British Sky Broadcasting. We moved quickly to settle and look forward to launching the rebranded product as the "Livescribe wifi smartpen" in the European Union on March 1, 2013."

Google's Nexus 10 tablet goes on sale in Japan after a few months delay

Google's Nexus 10 tablet goes on sale in Japan after a few months delay

Mimicking the postponed release schedule of its 7-inch cousin, Google's Nexus 10 tablet is just now going on sale in Japan. We originally expected Japanese availability at the same time as other areas last fall, but that was not in the cards for the high ppi slate. Shipping within the next couple of weeks, it's priced at 36,800 yen ($397) for the 16GB, and 44,800 yen ($484) for the 32GB, comparing very favorably with current US pricing. The specs remain the same, so if the only thing keeping you from owning one has been local availability then that's no longer a hurdle, although grabbing a hot-selling Nexus 4 is still a bit more tricky.

Ouya will come to stores for $99 in June after Kickstarter, online pre-orders ship

Whether you missed out on the Ouya console's initial Kickstarter frenzy, (and still open pre-order window) or are just waiting around to see what kind of games are available on the Android box this spring, it should still be easy to find one very soon. The company has announced that it will be available at retailers including Amazon, GameStop, Target and Best Buy for $99.99 this June, with pre-orders opening up later today. CEO Julie Uhrman informed the Wall Street Journal's Digits blog that additional controllers would be priced at $49.99 alongside the consoles at its official launch in June, with a "large suite" of gaming titles. She declined to reveal the exact number of systems already ordered, but proudly pointed to the Ouya as a box that will inventive and creative content that has never before been seen on television.

HTC's M4 and G2 Androids likely to launch after the M7

HTC's midrange M4 and lowend G2 likely to launch after the M7

Now that we know the M7 is alive and well, we can look at the other goodies that HTC is going to bring us this year. According to the pretty reliable @evleaks, two more Android phones will be launched at some point after the M7's pre-MWC debut: a fairly powerful M4 and a low-end G2 (not to be confused with the T-Mobile G2). The former's highlights are its 4.3-inch 720p display (same as the 8X's), a 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon chip, a whopping 13-megapixel F2.0 camera (apparently the same as the M7's) and optional LTE. On the other hand, the G2 will pack a more modest 3.5-inch 480 x 320 screen, a 1GHz processor and a 5-megapixel camera, so it's very much just a slight upgrade from the Desire C which also runs Ice Cream Sandwich -- unlike the beefier M4 with Jelly Bean. The same leakster reckons we won't be seeing these two devices at MWC, but we'll keep an eye out just in case.

Jurassic Park 3D Blu-ray comes home April 23rd after its one-week theatrical return

Jurassic Park 3D Bluray comes home April 23rd after its oneweek theatrical return

We've known since last year that Jurassic Park would make its return to theaters in 3D this April, but now Universal has also dropped the details about its Blu-ray 3D release, as well as the 2D release of all the flicks individually in March. Just to fill in the timeline: first Jurassic Park 1, 2 and 3 will hit Blu-ray/DVD individually (following the triple pack that shipped in 2011) on March 26th, then Jurassic Park in 3D arrives April 5th in regular and IMAX theaters (no, the now-dated CGI has not been redone, you can get a peek in the trailer embedded after the break) followed finally by the Blu-ray 3D April 26th.

While news that the flick is back on the big screen is exciting, we can't help but think there's a few missed opportunities here like the previously mentioned CGI, and lack of any extras detailing the conversion process on the disc. Still, some had complaints about the picture quality of the previous release and it's possible that remastering done in the name of 3D could see a better version this time around for all viewers. Either way, after Titanic, I, Robot and even Top Gun seeing 3D re-release it appears this is definitely a trend. The individual movies are priced at $24.49 on Amazon, and the 3D combo pack is $34.99.
