Samsung Galaxy S 4 heads to AT&T for $250 on contract, pre-orders begin April 16th

Samsung Galaxy S 4 headed to AT&T for $250, preorders begin April 16th

Just two days ago, T-Mobile's potty-mouthed CEO John Legere gave us a tentative May 1st launch date for Samsung's Galaxy S 4 on that network. And now, AT&T's making its S 4 plans public, opening up pre-orders for the device on April 16th. Subscribers that sign-up for a two-year plan will be able to snag the 5-inch 1080p GS 4 for $250. As to when it'll actually ship, well, that bit's still up in the air and we expect AT&T to elaborate in the weeks to come. But you can bet it won't be long before Samsung rushes to get its next big Galaxy thing into eager hands.

Instagram, Twitter posts begin to flow from North Korean 3G network

Instagram, Twitter posts begin to flow from North Korean 3G network

This week, tourists (and at least one reporter) visiting North Korea began accessing the web directly from their smartphones, through the country's Koryolink 3G network. Associated Press journalist Jean H. Lee has been tweeting from Pyongyang since Monday, though she didn't get around to detailing the service until yesterday. Her tweet, "Hello world from comms center in #Pyongyang," is believed to be the first to come through the new wireless data service, which can be activated for the princely sum of €75 (about $100). From there, data rates range from €150 for 2GB to €400 for 10 gigs, according to a DailyNK report. (Those tariffs should come as no surprise to DPRK visitors, who often shell out thousands for week-long tours that include meager accommodations and constant monitoring.)

The Koryolink network, which was built in cooperation with Egypt's Orascom Telecom, marks a radical shift in policy for North Korea, which also recently began to allow tourists to enter the country with their own cellphones -- previously, visitors were required to hand over the devices upon landing in Pyongyang. With the exception of approved users (certain government officials, we presume), North Korean residents remain offline, however. For those authorized, access may be pricey, but considering that connectivity can provide peace of mind to travelers and their families at home, a data-enabled SIM seems a worthwhile acquisition for anyone visiting one of 3G's famous final frontiers.

HP may begin selling off business units

HP is ringing in the New Year with plans to evaluate and dispose of businesses that are not meeting targets, the personal computer unit is safe from any potential divestiture however (that includes the printer unit which CEO Meg Whitman combined with the PC unit).

Unfortunately, some of the units that HP may be interested in selling may be a tad radioactive. A couple of examples that come to mind are the company’s acquisitions of EDS and Autonomy. The latter has garnered more of the news though. Autonomy was acquired by HP in 2011 which resulted in an $8.8 billion writedown in 2012, the transaction now being investigated by the Department of Justice over cooked books by Autonomy. That deal was designed by then-CEO Leo Apotheker before he was fired in late 2011, and the deal closed barely a month after Meg Whitman took the helm.

In a disclosure filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, HP acknowledged that it might have trouble selling some businesses, that it may “dispose of a business at a price or on terms that are less desirable than we had anticipated.” Moreover, HP expects such divestitures may have a larger impact on future growth than initially projected.

Consider this the first move in what HP said would be a difficult year ahead. It also sets the environment that we knew about in terms of HP’s plans to compete in the mobile phone segment – that will happen in 2014...we hope.
