Google, Office 365 and Dropbox lead in SMB cloud growth

Onwards and upwards for cloud servicesRelated storiesMicrosoft's Office 365 Home Premium races past one million usersShould you choose Office, Google or OpenOffice? How easy is it to migrate to Office 365?

Small and midsized businesses (SMBs) are using an increasing number of cloud services, especially for hosted email and file sharing, according to a newly published report from vertical IT network Spiceworks.

The survey, sponsored by cloud connectivity services provider LogMeIn, took in 500 IT professionals from SMBs predominantly in Europe and North America, and shows that the desire to access applications and data on the go has prompted increased use of cloud services.

Hosted email is on the verge of surpassing on-premise, with deployments edging up from 42% to 46% over the past year, and another 5% planning to migrate in the next six months.

Google is the leading provider with 32% of the business, but its share is down from 34% a year ago and it is facing increasing competition from Office 365, for which the share has grown from 16% to 30%.

File sharing

File sharing is also becoming more widely used, with 24% of respondents having an approved vendor, up from 19% last year, and another 6% planning to have one in place within six months. 50% acknowledge that employees use the services off their own backs, up from 33%.

Dropbox is the stand out supplier, accounting for 40% of the company approved activity and being used by 93% of employees. Google Apps is the closest competition with respective figures of 24% and 14%.

When it comes to productivity suites, 35% of respondents are using cloud-based systems and 13% plan to adopt them in the next six months. Office 365 and Google Apps are competing closely for their attention, figuring in the plans of 60% and 59% of the respondents.

Cloud-based web conferencing is also growing in popularity, with 42% currently using the technology and another 9% planning to do so soon.

Kathryn Pribish, Voice of IT Programme Manager at Spiceworks, said: "The survey results show that cloud-based services continue to be an integral way employees access information, communicate and collaborate during their work day."

Nest Energy Services link home cooling to utilities' cloud data

Nest Partners with Energy Companies Across U.S. to Offer Energy-Saving Plans and Instant Automatic Rebates

Rush Hour Rewards and Seasonal Savings Services Help People Save Energy, Money

Palo Alto, Calif. – Apr. 22, 2013 – Nest Labs, Inc. (www.nest.com) today announced that the company is partnering with leading progressive energy providers in the U.S. to offer more than 90 million people the opportunity to earn money and save even more this summer. Together with NRG Energy, its subsidiaries Reliant and Green Mountain Energy, National Grid, Austin Energy and Southern California Edison, Nest is enabling instant rebates and exclusive offers for the Nest® Learning Thermostat™, as well as introducing new ways to save energy with Rush Hour Rewards™ and Seasonal Savings™ services.

Rush Hour Rewards helps people earn money or credits from their energy provider by using less energy when everyone else is using more. With Seasonal Savings, a Nest thermostat uses its knowledge of a customer's schedule and preferences to gradually fine-tune the temperatures in the schedule to help save more energy. Both services are powered by Nest's proprietary Auto-Tune™ technology and offered only through Nest's energy partners.

"According to data from the Consortium for Energy Efficiency and Pike Research, in 2011, energy companies allocated approximately $9 billion to energy efficiency and peak-reduction programs," said Tony Fadell, Nest founder and CEO. "Nest's new offerings have the potential to make these programs not only more effective, but effortless for consumers. We're working with some of the country's most progressive energy providers – like NRG companies Reliant and Green Mountain Energy – and applying our design and marketing expertise, focus on the customer, and understanding of technology to make energy efficiency simple and accessible."

Early results of the new programs are promising. Based on Nest's spring 2013 nationwide trial in hundreds of homes, it's estimated that Seasonal Savings can save 5 to 10 percent on energy for heating and cooling (in addition to savings generated through Nest's Auto-Schedule™, Auto-Away™ and Airwave™ features). With Rush Hour Rewards, customers can earn $20 to $60 per season depending on the energy provider and other factors, including weather conditions.

"Nest has revolutionized the home thermostat in multiple ways and we are very pleased to be the first retail electricity provider to make it easy and affordable for our customers to enjoy the benefits of the Nest," said David Crane, president and CEO of NRG Energy. "We've been working with Nest for nearly a year and we've agreed to expand that relationship because of our shared commitment to developing and delivering the next generation of energy solutions that serve the needs and lifestyles of end-use customers. As an industry, residential load management is one of the biggest opportunities that we have to curb spikes in electricity use and when we can make it simple and keep customers comfortable with innovative tools like Nest, it's a win for NRG and our customers."

Rush Hour Rewards

Just like rush hour on the freeway, when there aren't enough lanes to accommodate all the traffic, the electric grid can also get congested on hot summer days. To keep up with demand, additional – and often less efficient – power plants are brought online to cover high-demand days. Energy providers would rather reward their customers for using less energy during rush hours, and Rush Hour Rewards is designed to help customers take advantage of those rewards.

Rush Hour Rewards automatically adjusts temperatures around rush hours. Depending on what Nest has learned from you and your home, Nest might raise the temperature by a few degrees during the afternoon and/or pre-cool a home before the rush hour begins to make sure you're reasonably comfortable while using less energy during the rush hour. The customer is always in control. To override the temperature, simply change the setting during a rush hour and Nest will keep the temperatures you set.

Seasonal Savings

Over time, everyone gets settled into a schedule. We get used to the temperatures we've set and can miss easy opportunities to decrease our bills. It's possible to save a lot of money by making minor temperature adjustments to your schedule and Seasonal Savings is designed to do that automatically for you, fine-tuning your schedule over several weeks so you don't notice a difference in comfort.

Seasonal Savings can appear twice per year: early in the heating and cooling seasons. It uses everything Nest has learned about your home and temperature preferences to identify ways that you can save energy without compromising comfort. Nest slowly adjusts temperatures over several weeks – never more than a few degrees total. This allows you to get used to the change gradually to make sure you don't feel too hot or too cold. Changes could include moving a temperature so that it's a little bit earlier or later in your schedule, adjusting temperatures a few degrees, or even adding or getting rid of temperatures in your schedule. Actual savings will vary by weather, your usage, and your provider's rate plan, but Nest studies show plan participants can use 5 to 10 percent less energy when heating or cooling. You can change the schedule at any time, but if you stick with Seasonal Savings' tuned-up schedule, it will reduce your energy use for the season while still keeping you comfortable. In Nest trials, 80 percent of participants kept their new schedules after the Seasonal Savings service was completed.

Auto-Tune Technology

Nest Auto-Tune technology looks for opportunities to save people money and then makes adjustments automatically for people who opt into the new plans offered through select energy companies. Using Nest's knowledge of personal temperature preferences and schedules, the weather, and home profiles – as well as Nest's proprietary algorithms – Auto-Tune makes subtle temperature tweaks while maximizing people's savings.

Like many of Nest's features, Auto-Tune technology will continue to get better over time. Auto-Tune can be used to track energy costs, not only showing you when energy is more expensive, but adjusting your thermostat to help you keep to a specified budget. And for energy provider customers on Time of Use (TOU) plans, Auto-Tune can set an optimal schedule to preserve comfort.

No-Hassle, Instant Online Rebates for Nest

For most rebates, you have to fill out paperwork, dig up receipts, mail everything in and wait. And wait. So we reinvented the rebate: we've joined with National Grid in Rhode Island and Massachusetts to create an instant $100 online rebate when National Grid customers buy a Nest thermostat, making Nest more accessible than ever.

Rush Hour Rewards and Seasonal Savings Availability

Rush Hour Rewards and Seasonal Savings are available only to customers of Nest's energy partners. If you are an energy company interested in learning more about Nest's utility programs, contact partnerships@nest.com.

Reliant – Reliant customers throughout Texas will have three ways to save with Nest:
• The Reliant Learn & ConserveSM plan, which includes a Nest thermostat at no cost.
• The new Reliant Free WeekendsSM plan with Nest, the first plan to offer free energy all weekend along with a Nest thermostat.
• The Reliant Degrees of Difference with Nest program, which customers can sign up for alongside their existing Reliant plan. Degrees of Difference with Nest gives customers the opportunity to earn credits during energy rush hours and lets them access both Rush Hour Rewards and Seasonal Savings.

For more details, visit www.nest.com/reliant.

Green Mountain Energy – Green Mountain Energy customers in Texas, Illinois, New York and Pennsylvania who sign up for the Pollution Free™ Efficient with Nest plan will get the Seasonal Savings service beginning this summer. More details on Seasonal Savings for Green Mountain customers will be available in late May. For more information, visit www.nest.com/greenmountain.

Austin Energy – Beginning today, Austin Energy customers who own a Nest can sign up for Rush Hour Rewards and Seasonal Savings. To enroll, visit www.nest.com/ae.

Southern California Edison – Nest customers can sign up today for Rush Hour Rewards and Seasonal Savings. For more information, visit www.nest.com/sce.

Chrome for Business adds legacy browser support, cloud management

Chrome for Business adds legacy browser support, cloud management

Not one to leave its business customers out of the loop, Google updated its Chrome for Business browser today with a couple of new features: legacy browser support and cloud-based management for Google Apps. With the former, those who are obliged to use older apps at work (poor you) will be automatically switched to an alternate browser when needed, while the cloud-based management allows employees to log in to their Google Apps for Business or Education accounts from any device. Of course, both features require the approval of your friendly neighborhood IT administrator, so do remember to offer him or her a token of appreciation the next time their special day rolls around.

Boxee TV becomes Boxee Cloud DVR, adds free 'Basic' DVR service

Boxee TV becomes Boxee Cloud DVR, adds free 'Basic' DVR service

Following the trend of everything accentuating its connection to the "cloud," Boxee has rebranded its new box as the Boxee Cloud DVR. GigaOm reports the company made the shift to emphasize its DVR features as a differentiator from other $99 set-tops like those offered by Roku and Apple. Other than the name change and a website redesign, one other new tack is a free "Basic" service package. Buyers still get the "All-access" $10 service tier free for a month upfront on a trial basis, which has unlimited storage and playback across different devices. Once that runs out however, they can opt for basic service where cloud-stored DVR recordings are limited to 5 hours of monthly playback on the box itself and expire after 90 days. While the DVR service's availability is still limited to eight markets, the plan is to expand to 26 by the end of this year. Once it rolls out to more areas and the DVR features come out of beta, we'll see if buyers are ready to give this second attempt at blending online and OTA video a shot.

Drobo Ease-of-Use and Affordability Extended to Cloud for Easier Data Protection and Sharing, and to On-Premise and Mobile Devices for Media Access and Streaming

San Jose, CA - March 28, 2013 – Drobo, makers of award-winning data storage products for businesses and professionals, today announced a new software application platform that enables enhanced mobile and cloud-connect capabilities for Drobo 5N customers. The first two applications to be integrated include Copy™, a cloud-based file storage, syncing and sharing platform where users can easily store, protect and share data, and Plex, the industry's leading media server for managing and serving digital media (video, music and photos) to nearly any device (TV, PC, or mobile). The company also announced availability of a development kit by which other leading application developers will be able to further extend the power and simplicity of its new networked storage device for remote access/sharing, media streaming, and cloud integration.

"Our customers have been asking for us to help them extend the ease and affordability of Drobo beyond the four walls of their business or home," said Tom Buiocchi, CEO of Drobo. "Secure mobile and cloud enhancements to Drobo are natural and very valuable extensions, and we are delighted to be working with such industry leaders as Barracuda and Plex."

Available Thursday, March 28, Drobo's first integrated cloud application is Barracuda Networks' cloud-based service called Drobo Copy. The Copy application allows customers to easily protect and synchronize data between their on-site Drobo and the cloud, and to securely share information with friends, colleagues and associates globally. The ease-of-use delivered by the integration of the Copy application on the Drobo 5N is unprecedented. The new Copy application for the Drobo 5N is available beginning March 28 via a free download at www.drobo.com/droboapps and includes free use of 5GB of cloud storage and no per-user fees.

"Our customers understand the value of easy, affordable, and secure cloud storage that ties into their easy, affordable, and secure local storage," said Guy Suter, GM Storage Business at Barracuda Networks. "Barracuda and Drobo are delivering an industry-leading, integrated solution for the majority of business customers who want and need both."

Plex is quickly becoming the default media ecosystem for Google TVs, smart TVs, set-top boxes (STBs), game consoles, DLNA-enabled devices, Roku, home theater PCs, and mobile devices that run iOS, Android, and Windows mobile operating systems. In addition, Plex can extend the media experience across all of these devices with features like web video queuing, recommendations, PlexSync (which enables taking content with you on your mobile device) and more. Plex's user interface has been hailed as the easiest and most intuitive in the industry by reviewers and its several million users worldwide.

"Plex is proud to integrate our media serving and access capabilities to the Drobo 5N for the very knowledgeable, media-savvy Drobo customer base," said Elan Feingold, CTO and co-founder of Plex. "Given the explosive growth of personal and online rich media content and mobile devices everywhere, we think this will be a very popular solution." Plex on the Drobo 5N is expected to ship in April, and like the Copy application, will be available for free download from Drobo Apps.

The new Drobo application platform, complete with an enhanced user interface and experience, will enable Drobo 5N customers to access a growing list of diverse, integrated applications from leading commercial software developers.

"As a long-time Drobo enthusiast and developer, I have been able to create and share many new applications leveraging the simplicity of Drobo storage," said Ricardo Padilha, owner of the community portal www.droboports.com. Draft cloud editor saves writing in stages, imports from just about anywhere

Draft cloud editor saves work in stages, imports from just about anywhere

Although web-based editors like Google Docs are wonderful for writers who don't have a save shortcut hardwired in their muscle memory, they're lousy for anyone who's interested in seeing major revisions on the road to a final copy. Nathan Kontny's new Draft web app might be far more helpful for those creators who work step by step. It lets writers declare given document versions as mid-progress drafts, and offers editing side-by-side with older versions to see just what's new in the current session. The app also avoids some of the lock-in that comes with cloud services by allowing imports and syncing with Box, Dropbox, Evernote and Google Drive. There's no easy way to directly publish online as this stage, but if you're only concerned with producing a masterwork in the cloud from start to draft to finish, Kontny's web tool is waiting at the source link.

Dropbox for Teams adds an admin console for cloud storage overlords

Dropbox for Teams adds an admin console for cloud storage overlords

Although Dropbox made a concerted push into pro-grade cloud storage with Dropbox for Teams more than a year ago, it didn't have a truly centralized place for a team's overseers to keep tabs on everyone involved. An update today brings in a console to make sense of it all. Along with providing a much simpler at-a-glance view of goings on across an entire group, the console lets administrators tighten access limits from user to user: they can prevent people from using their personal smartphones and tablets with the corporate account, for example, and can ask certain people to sign in with two-factor authentication if there's more of a risk. The refresh might rain on the parades of those who want to use their Teams accounts for both work and play, but it's good news for companies that would rather not risk malware or other rude surprises.

Dubbed the Converged Cloud unit, it'll be headed by Saar Gillai who has been promoted to senior VP. The unit will manage all things cloud, from hardware and services to its marketing and networking partners. Judging from its recent financial woes, perhaps this renewed gamble on internet services will push it further into the black.

CES 2013: Cisco's Videoscape Unity software brings cloud DVR to multiple devices

Cisco's Videoscape Unity software brings cloud DVR to multiple devicesCome together over TV

Borne of the acquisition of NDS one year ago, Cisco announced its newest Videoscape Unity service at CES Monday, expanding on its 24-month old Videoscape offerings.

The world's leading networker is pushing out Unity to its cable-providing partners because, as the software's name suggests, it's looking to build an integrated and shared experience between users, their devices and the people users are connected with.

"Unity is first and foremost a transformational user experience for all content," Martin De Beer, senior vice president of Cisco's Video and Collaboration Group, said during the company's CES press conference.

To that end, the Cisco team has built an open software platform that delivers a multi-screen video experience, cloud DVR and social media experience wrapped into one.

Cisco Videoscape Unity

Unity makes social media part of the viewing process while delivering a multi-screen cloud digital video recorder so users can pick up where they left off on shows, catch up on episodes they missed and playback DVR-capture content on any device wherever they are.

"We recognize how television will change in the future," said Jesper Andersen, senior vice president and general manager of the service provider video technology group.

Whether you're watching a show on a phone, tablet or TV, Unity will let you pick up watching it on any one of the other devices.

Cisco Videoscape Unity

Recommendations are also more intuitive and predictive, the Cisco crew said, going beyond simply suggesting what users might want to watch and basically offering up options that are tuned into their preferences.

Unity doesn't just work with paid TV content - free content like a video taped by a user on their tablet will also show up on a home screen thanks to the software.

De Beer explained users don't even need to set their DVRs to record a show - Unity knows all and will record your must-watch TV from any device

Cisco's also viewing television as a place of social interaction, one it hopes to develop as such into a fully integrated, immersive viewing and interpersonl experience.

Looking ahead, the company demoed a feature where the Unity interface could be projected onto a large wall-sized screen. Pulling up a basketball game as an example, Cisco showed a 360-experience - complete with what show was playing, what's on next, player stats and social media blasts from friends and followers.

Cisco Videoscape Unity

Cisco customers - a.k.a cable providers like Fox, Cox Communications and Major League Baseball, representatives of which hopped onstage for a panel discussion following the presentation - are the entities who need to bring Videoscape Unity to offer to their customers.

With all its future possibilities, we hope cable providers embrace Unity.

"Over the past five years, we've seen a trend among parents trying to use our existing Y-cam cameras for baby monitoring. As parents ourselves, we understood that our current cameras didn't meet the needs of modern parents so we tasked ourselves with creating a baby monitoring system that integrated the high-tech video and wireless Wi-Fi technology of our current lines blended with more user-friendly features and cutting-edge app development," said Chawda. "The BabyPing Video Monitor leads the Y-cam vision to make monitoring loved ones simple and affordable for everyone."

BabyPing
BabyPing is a secure Wi-Fi-enabled smart baby monitor. Parents can hear, view and monitor their infant at all times via an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch using the free BabyPing app, which runs in the background so users can continue to read books, surf the web or listen to music on their devices while simultaneously monitoring their baby.

BabyPing has developed its own technology evolving it into a truly next generation smart baby monitor – not just a 'baby viewer.' SmartFilterTM technology cuts out background noise and static associated with traditional baby monitors, and Constant-ConnectTM acts as a permanent tether between the app and monitor notifying the user when the baby is upset or or if their Wi-Fi network status changes at any point. BabyPing+ allows for viewing when outside the home over 3G, 4G or Wi-Fi, and also gives one-tap sharing access to family and friends, wherever they are in the world. These features allow parents to not only see their baby remotely, but actually monitor their baby locally without delays or broken connections.
BabyPing is currently the only Wi-Fi monitor on the market with completely invisible infrared night vision, offering round-the-clock visibility without disturbing the baby. Modern and sleek in design, BabyPing is simple to set-up directly on an iOS device with no need for a computer, and the ability to use the monitor at home when not connected to the internet ensures parents who worry about privacy and security can rest easy. BabyPing also features all the specifications you would expect from a high tech baby monitor, such as vivid full color video with 640 x 480 resolution, a high quality built-in microphone and superfast wireless Wi-Fi, double-layer security and customizable alerts (live audio or silent vibrations) to inform parents if the baby cries, if Wi-Fi connection has been broken or if the iOS device is out of range, putting parents firmly in control by creating the safest way to monitor their baby.

Launched in September 2012 in the US, BabyPing has already received the prestigious 2012 Kind Und Jugend Innovation Award for its ingenious use of the latest in modern, safe technology. To learn more or to purchase BabyPing ($199.99), visit www.babyping.com.

Xbox Live outage temporarily disconnecting cloud storage for some users

Xbox Live outage temporarily disconnecting cloud storage for some users

Microsoft added a cloud storage feature to the Xbox 360 in its fall 2011 dashboard update, but today an outage has taken it offline for the last several hours and counting. As noted by Joystiq, trying to access your cloud saves is resulting in a 0x807b0198 error for many, although other parts of XBL like streaming video services and multiplayer gaming profiles are unaffected. For the moment, we were able to copy/move some of our saves from the cloud cache on our hard drive (Settings --> storage --> cloud storage) to the normal hard drive section, and access them from there. Your mileage may vary, but otherwise you'll just need to keep an eye out the XBL dashboard status page to see when things are back to normal. There's no word yet on when it will be fully restored, but a message there says engineers are working on a fix. We're not missing the old "gamertag recovery" feature the cloud system replaced and upgraded, but any significant outage is certainly enough to make us think about keeping our saves backed up on a memory card in a safe place -- just in case.

Amazon cloud server outage knocks out Netflix for Christmas

Amazon cloud server outage knocks out Netflix for ChristmasAmazon server outage takes down Netflix. Prime remained unaffected

An issue with Amazon's web servers took down Netflix for some subscribers as they settled into watch festive movies on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Amazon Web Services, which hosts a massive array of the world's most popular online services, said it is experiencing an issue with the Elastic Load Balancing Service on the east coast of the United States.

The fault restricted access to Netflix "on some, but not all devices" at perhaps the most important time of the year, as families gather to catch-up on old classics.

Some users testing out the the streaming platform with new gadgets and activating new subscriptions received as Christmas gifts will also have been disappointed.

Netflix tweeted on Christmas Eve to say: "We're sorry for the Christmas Eve outage. Terrible timing! Engineers are working on it now."

However, the company is likely to be furious with Amazon.

In a further twist, the rival Amazon Prime Instant Video service has reportedly remained online throughout the village, although there's little hint of an attempted Christmas coup de grâce.

As well as Netflix, the Heroku cloud application platform also fell victim to the issue, which Amazon was still working on correcting on Christmas morning.

Netflix says the majority of its customers were back online by Pacific Time in the US on Christmas Eve, which is eight hours behind UK time.

Amazon's servers last experienced a major outage back in June, when it knocked out Netflix, Pinterest and Instagram, among other popular services.

Hipster Santa Keeps His List In the Cloud

This story will display in ...Dec 22, 2012 9:00 PM

Hipster Santa Keeps His List In the Cloud Face it, Santa is pretty antiquated. I mean, what kind of crazy elf-powered factory must he have up there in the North pole in order to be churning out iPhones and laptops and Wii Us? Ridiculous as it is, you don't want him to get hip, because he'd turn into this. He'd keep his list in the cloud. He'd order all his gifts on Amazon Prime like the rest of us. God only knows what he'd do with Snapchat. Maybe some things are best left outdated. [Reddit]

Oracle buys web firm Eloqua to boost cloud presence

By Sayantani Ghosh
Thu Dec 20, 2012 12:10pm EST
n">(Reuters) - Oracle Corp agreed to buy Eloqua Inc, a maker of web-based marketing automation software that listed in August, for about $810 million as it seeks to expand its cloud-computing services.
Eloqua makes software to help businesses predict and grow revenue by monitoring marketing and sales initiatives. Its customers include AON Plc, Dow Jones, Automatic Data Processing Inc, Polycom Inc and National Instruments Corp.
Oracle, which came late to cloud computing, is trying to be a one-stop shop for operating systems, databases, computer programs and infrastructure over the Web.
"The acquisition of Eloqua will add a leading market automation solution to Oracle's strong salesforce automation products and the recently acquired RightNow call center automation solution," Nomura Equity Research analysts said in a research note.
Oracle bought RightNow Technologies last year for $1.5 billion, sparking several more acquisitions in the cloud-computing market including IBM Inc's acquisition of Kenexa and SAP AG's purchase of SuccessFactors.
Oracle, which has traditionally offered installed software products, then bought Taleo, a cloud-based HR software firm.
"We would expect Oracle to continue to make acquisitions in this space, to bolster its Fusion Applications suite and respond to competitive pressure in the applications market from SAP and Salesforce.co," Nomura said.
Oracle priced the deal at $871 million, net of Eloqua's cash. Based on the 34.5 million Eloqua shares outstanding as of October 31, the equity portion of the deal came to $810 million.
Cloud computing, a broad term referring to the delivery of services via the Internet from remote data centers, is a favorite with corporate technology buyers because it is faster to implement and has lower upfront costs than traditional software.
Oracle Chief Executive Larry Ellison mocked cloud computing in 2008 as "complete gibberish". He described it as a fad, comparing the computer industry to the fashion world.
But Oracle has since introduced its own web products and acquired several firms selling internet-based software as its corporate customers embraced web services offered by Salesforce.com Inc, Amazon.com Inc and Google Inc.
"Although Oracle already had strong marketing functionality, this gives it a cloud offering to deliver and an additional base of midmarket customers providing a recurring license maintenance stream," Nucleus Research analyst Rebecca Wettemann said.
The company's $23.50 per share offer for Eloqua represents a 31 percent premium to Eloqua's Nasdaq close on Wednesday.
Eloqua shares jumped to match the offer price while Oracle's shares were flat at $34.05 on the Nasdaq.
"Eloqua's leading marketing automation cloud will become the centerpiece of the Oracle Marketing Cloud," said Thomas Kurian, Executive Vice President of Oracle Development.
Eloqua's board has unanimously approved the deal, which is expected to close in the first half of 2013.
Oracle said on Tuesday that software sales growth will stay strong into the new year despite fears that there could be big tax hikes and U.S. government spending cuts that could cause a slump in spending by customers.

Apptio launches cloud cost service

Apptio launches cloud cost serviceThe cost of cloud can be a mystery

A free service for businesses to track the usage and costs of public cloud services has been launched by US based technology business management solutions provider Apptio.

Named Apptio Cloud Express, it can be used for a number of cloud offerings including Amazon Web Services (AWS), Windows Azure, and Rackspace.

It makes it possible for users to view their cloud costs as itemised bills, identify aggregate spending and carry out analyses to quantify potential savings from shifting to private or public cloud services. It provides recommendations on potential cost savings of moving from on-demand to reserved instances.

Users have to register their accounts from the third party cloud service providers in Apptio Cloud Express, which then automatically imports billing and usage data.

The company said the data will help companies to make informed decisions on strategies for cloud computing.

Apptio's chief executive officer Sunny Gupta said: "We've captured the emerging best practices for analysing costs and performance across different types of cloud scenarios, and made that information broadly available to our customers. Now, IT leaders can spend less time manually validating data and more time confidently providing answers."

Apptio Cloud Express is based on technology from Apptio's recent acquisition of Raveld, a Seattle based company providing software for companies to measure and optimise the cost and performance of public cloud computing services.
