Alleged next-gen iPad rear casing suggests mini-esque design and finish

Alleged nextgen iPad rear casing suggests miniesque design and finish

We've seen a possible case, what could be the front portion of Apple's next iPad and this time around, Tactus has got its hands on the other half, the rear casing. Unfortunately, it's the not-so-interesting view, but we can still make out the space for the hole for the camera lens, sharper corners and the same dark blue finish we saw on both the fifth iteration of the iPhone and the iPad Mini. Tactus reckons it'll hold onto the original iPad's 9.7-inch display, but surround it with a thinner bezel. As for the rest of the specs that will eventually reside inside the redesigned shell, well, we'll have to wait for the official reveal from Apple for the full story.

Update: It's worth noting that 9to5Mac spied a similarly redesigned iPad shell at the start of the year. We've included their leak after the break. Thanks for everyone that sent this in!

Motorola design chief: stock Android phones, cross-carrier brands coming later this year

Back in February, Google CFO Patrick Pichette said its recent purchase, Motorola, didn't "wow" on the smartphone front, but it looks like the two companies have long since smoothed over any hard feelings. Speaking to PC Mag, Motorola design chief Jim Wicks revealed plans for the first post-acquisition handsets, demonstrating a philosophy that seems perfectly in line with Mountain View. According to Wicks, his company is embracing stock Android with as little bloatware as possible, and hardware itself won't likely reach Galaxy Note II proportions; he says the new design philosophy is "better is better" rather than "bigger is better."

Motorola will also change its approach to carriers, with a move toward offering devices across several service providers rather than keeping certain handsets -- such as the Droid and Razr lines on Verizon -- as exclusives for one. For AT&T and Sprint customers who were tempted by the Razr M on Verizon, for example, this strategy could go a long way in bringing them into the Motorola fold. Wicks says the first batch of new smartphones will debut in the second half of 2013 -- and, at least according to Eric Schmidt, they should be quite impressive.

SugarSync for iOS gets an all-new design, multi-platform search functionality

SugarSync Launches Redesigned iOS App to Give iPhone and iPad Users Even Greater On-the-Go Productivity

· Completely redesigned user interface with simpler navigation for enhanced ease of use

· New Cloud Search added for quick access to any file or folder

· "Open In" functionality allows users to save files from other apps directly into SugarSync

SAN MATEO, CALIF., April 15, 2013– SugarSync, a premium service that lets you access, sync and share all of your files and folders across all your computers and mobile devices, today introduced a new iOS app addressing customers' most highly requested features for enhanced productivity on the go, and a completely redesigned interface. The latest app makes it easier than ever for Apple users to access and share files and folders from any computer or device directly from an iPhone or iPad. The free SugarSync for iOS app is available today and can be downloaded directly from the App Store.

The newest features to SugarSync's iOS app include:

New Simplified Design and Navigation - Today's update to the iOS app includes a simpler design and more intuitive navigation, allowing users to quickly access and share their files and folders. The new nav includes a device filter, which provides the ability to either view all of the folders in a user's SugarSync Cloud or only the folders syncing to a specific computer. Managing and accessing shared content has been simplified with the "Shared by Me" and "Shared with Me" sections.

The redesigned iOS app brings a streamlined, modern user interface-creating a consistent UI design across all SugarSync platforms, including the SugarSync 2.0 desktop and Web applications.

"Cloud Search" to Easily Navigate the Mobile Cloud – SugarSync's ability to sync any PC/Mac folder to an unlimited number of devices often means users have a ton of files and folders synced to one's personal Cloud. As a result, one of the most requested enhancements to date has been delivered upon with "Cloud Search." This feature allows for easy search and discovery of any file or folder synced to the SugarSync Cloud from any computer or device. Search results are grouped into different categories such as folders, documents, photos, videos, etc. making it even easier to navigate all the content.

"Open In, From Anywhere" Feature – The new iOS apps includes an "Open In" feature that allows users to open and save files from other apps directly into their SugarSync app. For example, if a Word document is received via email, there's now the option of saving this document to the SugarSync Cloud straight from an iPhone or iPad (versus the desktop), as well as the option of selecting the folder to save it to.

"With our ever-increasing mobile jobs and lifestyles, we not only recognize the importance of enabling people to access all of their data anytime, anywhere, but also how we can make it easier for people to be more productive when they're on the go," says SugarSync CEO Mike Grossman. "We've kept the same powerful features our users have come to rely on in the original iOS app and enhanced this version with some highly requested new features such as Cloud Search and "Open In" functionality."

SugarSync has always offered the ability to sync any folder on any computer –versus boxing content into one specific syncing folder-allowing the flexibility of having all important folders and files synced to one's SugarSync Cloud. This unique and essential feature will always be the foundation of SugarSync and is a significant part of what makes it one of the highest rated cloud services. SugarSync offers a free 5GB version with larger plans for SMBs ranging from 60GB to 1T.

Apple updates iOS Podcasts app with new design, custom stations

Apple overhauls iOS Podcasts app, adds custom stations

There's been few Apple iOS apps that have garnered more complaints than the company's Podcasts app (outside of Maps, at least), and it looks like it's now finally taken some of those criticisms into consideration with the latest update (version 1.2). That includes the overly-stylized design, which has been ditched in favor of a simpler approach that's more in line with the iTunes app (including a far more basic player interface). Along with those changes come some new features like custom stations, which are each stored in iCloud and updated automatically, and so-called On-The-Go playlists that'll let you load up any individual episodes you like. You can find the app itself and the full list of changes now in the App Store.

Samsung Galaxy S IV design, specs potentially leaked on Twitter (update: they're from Expansys)

Samsung Galaxy S IV design, specs potentially leaked on Twitter

Even as the secret of Samsung's Galaxy S IV has been handed off to some teenager, the @evleaks Twitter account (which has been reliable in the past) just posted a supposed pic of and specs for the phone. Along with what's clearly a rendering and potentially just a placeholder image of the phone, the specs list a Super AMOLED Full HD screen of unknown size, 16GB/32GB/64GB storage options with 2GB of RAM, a 13MP camera and Android 4.2 OS. A second image shows the same mockup lined up with previous Galaxy phones apparently confirming its status as the largest one yet, although that's not surprising given recent trends. Of course, given what we know about the lengths Samsung went to protect the design of the Galaxy S III (multiple designs, hand-delivered prototypes), you'll forgive us for reserving judgement until the real thing is shown off on March 14th.

Update: We've been informed that both renders are from e-tailer Expansys, which adds yet another dusting of salt to the reliability of these specs. The listing also throws in that rumored eye-based scrolling feature. Jeremy is in big trouble.

Update 2: Now evleaks has deleted the original tweets -- anyone else ready for 9 more days like this?

The Engadget Interview: Chul Bae Lee, VP of LG's mobile design lab at MWC 2013

The Engadget Interview Chul Bae Lee, VP of LG's mobile design lab at MWC 2013

We first met Chul Bae Lee -- VP of LG's mobile design lab -- in Seoul last fall and were lucky to spend a few minutes with him in the company's booth at MWC. LG's flagship Optimus G Pro made quite the splash in Barcelona but looks rather different from the Optimus G. We asked Mr. Lee to walk us through the design process behind the company's new superphone. He mentioned that LG offers two high-end product lines, one focused on premium design (Optimus G), the other on high-performance design (Optimus G Pro) and shared a diagram with us to illustrate this (after the break). The new handset puts an emphasis on ergonomics rather than style by featuring a comfortable and a friendly shape, with soft edges and round corners.

We discussed the extremely narrow display bezel, striking RGB notification ring around the home button, recessed camera lens and IR blaster (for the QRemote functionality). Mr. Lee explained that the placement of the buttons around the Optimus G Pro was carefully chosen to minimize interference with the power / lock key -- this includes the QNote button, which can be remapped to invoke other apps, and even double as a shutter key. We then talked about the new Optimus F series, which blends the design DNA of flagship devices with performance specs (like LTE) at a more affordable price, and the Optimus L II line, which offers unique designs for specific markets (single SIM in Europe, and dual-SIM in Latin America). Hi the break for our video interview and to check out the aforementioned design diagram.

LG reveals 5.5-inch Optimus G Pro design with curved glass

LG reveals 55inch Optimus G Pro design with curved glass

Clearly, a lot of us wanted LG to reveal the design of the 5.5-inch Optimus G Pro as quickly as possible: just a day after a teaser, we're looking at the complete picture. And it's quite a looker, by all counts. While it has the familiar digital cube pattern on the back, it's also using curved glass in black or white, which LG says produces a "2.5D" effect. Those other details that LG is willing to divulge are largely what we expected based on the Japanese edition, including a full HD (1080p) display and a quad-core processor that's likely the Snapdragon S4 Pro. LG expects the larger G Pro to launch in late February, although it didn't say whether or not this is limited to South Korea; based on the timing, though, we might get a peek at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Apple granted design patent for fourth-gen iPod touch, reminds us of the shorter, plumper past

Image

Merry Christmas! The USPTO is celebrating in a big way, with the copyright stamp making some pretty big rounds today. First up is a design patent for an iPod touch, which Cupertino filed back in August of 2011. It looks to be the fourth-gen model from 2010, especially given that the patent focuses on the very rounded edges. This iPod touch was the first version to include both front- and rear-facing cameras, and in any case, the design is miles thicker and shorter than this year's touch. As Patently Apple points out, this document also happens to be one of the last to list Steve Jobs as an inventor.
