SimCity update 2.0 hits April 22, offers bug fixes, enhancements -- still no offline mode

Although SimCity has become relatively stable following its problematic launch, there are naturally still ongoing bugs that the folks at EA Maxis have been working to fix. Thankfully, that version 2.0 update that was teased just over a week ago now has an arrival date of April 22 at 4PM ET. Included in the update are 26 bug fixes, along with data map color filters, a color-correct HUD for the colorblind setting and the action of mayors traveling from their mansions to their jobs. Sadly, an offline mode is still no more than wishful thinking, but at least that OS X version should still be on track for a June 11th release. You'll find all the details about your virtual city's soon-to-arrive enhancements at the source link -- expect some server downtime, by the way, when the update itself hits.

Raspbmc's March update brings XBMC 12.1, fixes to Raspberry Pi

Just because you have a Raspberry Pi, and the know-how to change the world, doesn't mean you want to do everything the hard way. For those who haven't already applied the 12.1 update to XBMC running on their Raspberry Pi, the Raspbmc team is now eager to handle the dirty work for you. Wondering how easy it is to upgrade? Just reboot your Pi and wait about 15 minutes. Seriously, that's all the elbow grease required to receive a litany of fixes and enhancements in the latest version of XBMC as well as a number of specific patches for Raspbmc. Specifically, there is a newer version of HDMI-CEC, improved support for internet streams and third-party modules, and finally, a few security fixes.

Ceton brings major Echo WMC Extender update out of beta, fixes 1080i and more

Ceton brings major Echo WMC Extender update out of beta, fixes 1080i and more

We've been eagerly tracking Ceton's Echo Windows Media Center Extender since its debut at CES, however as we noted in our review, at launch its appeal was held back by some bugs. The team over there responded to the issues by extending the warranty and return period, and today announced that a patch fixing our biggest issue -- 1080i video playback -- is available to all users. We've been checking out the update in beta and can confirm it works (check out this week's Engadget HD Podcast for more details), and also brings other changes. Those include a new native resolution mode if you'd rather let your TV or other device do the video processing, fully functional Echo settings webpage plus fixes for aspect ratios, color space, green screen issues and much more. Owners can get all the info and find out how to grab the update at the source link -- if you'd like to be in the beta group (no new info on that Android update, yet), you can join just by choosing it in settings.

Next Windows Phone update to include VPN support, various fixes

With the launch of Windows Phone 8 almost exactly a month ago, Microsoft is already looking forward to an interim update for the platform. Codenamed Apollo Plus, the update is said to include wireless and audio improvements, as well as VPN support -- a feature that has been missing since the initial Windows Phone release but was part of previous versions of Windows’ mobile operating system.

ZDNet’s Mary Jo Foley notes that Microsoft had previously decided against including the latter and instead rely on things like Secure SSL, claiming it’s "a better, light-weight approach" for providing a secure environment to business users. But apparently that was a deal-breaker for many organizations in adopting Windows Phone.

VPN support also proves useful for circumventing government-imposed web browsing restrictions in some countries, and to access online services that are blocked in some regions due to copyright licensing issues.

Reports also mention the possibility of a Notification Center for Windows 8, a feature that Microsoft has admitted it didn't have time to finish in time for release. If all goes according to plan, Microsoft is expected to detail the update during Mobile World Congress in February, with a release shortly thereafter during the first quarter of 2013. This will be the first update to use Microsoft’s new over-the-air infrastructure.
