Google speeds up mobile web search, introduces expandable sitelinks and quick view badges

DNP

Continuing its efforts to speed up the way we find things when searching the web from our smartphones, Google is rolling out expandable sitelinks. Instead of wasting time sifting through a website trying to locate a specific page, this new feature generates a list of related quick links that allow you to jump directly to what you're looking for. Already available in desktop results, expandable links are hit or miss when used on mobile. Not stopping there, Google also announced the release of its new Quick view badges. This experimental project produces highlighted links from Wikipedia, which offer snippets of information relevant to your query. Pictured above are results for different types of poker hands. It won't stop you from losing your money, but now you'll always remember a flush beats a straight. As of now Quick view is only available in English search results, but Google is working on adding support for additional languages.

Yandex introduces Twym online payment system for Twitter-based transfers

Yandex introduces Twym online payment system for Twitterbased transfers

Russia's Yandex has been in the online payment business for more than a decade now with its Yandex.Money service, but it's branching out into some slightly more uncharted territory with its latest addition. Dubbed Twym, the company's new service will let folks send actual rubles to other Twitter users with nothing more than a tweet like the one above. Before that transfer takes place, though, both the sender and receiver of the money will need to link their Twitter and Yandex.Money accounts, and there are expectedly some limits on the amounts that can be transfered. 100,000 rubles (or roughly $3,300) is the maximum limit allowed by Yandex, but that can be changed by each user. You can also thankfully keep things private via direct message if you'd rather not broadcast your money transfers to all your followers.

Vimeo introduces content ratings for videos, keeps its platform in check

Vimeo introduces content ratings for videos, keeps its platform in check

Vimeo's certainly made its presence felt inside multiple media-delivery mezzanines, but the video service isn't forgetting all about the basics: its own platform. As such, Vimeo today announced some more changes to its website, which will see the introduction of a content rating system for published videos. The most recent alterations, as seen in the picture above, add an assessed rating badge to a user's video, making it a requirement to brand any uploads as "All Audiences," "Mature," or "Not Yet Rated." According to Vimeo, these content ratings are "the first step along a path that will make Vimeo more accessible to more audiences," adding that sometimes it's a a good idea to let folks know "if a face is going to explode or if someone is going to take their jean shorts off."

CES 2013: Ford introduces AppLink at CES 2013

Ford introduces AppLink at CES 2013Ford talks tech at CES 2013

Bluetooth connectivity is joining power windows and power locks on the list of Ford's standard features. On Monday at CES 2013, the American automotive giant announced AppLink, an open source resource for app developers.

Model years 2012 of Ford's most popular cars will feature AppLink, which will allow drivers to control smartphone apps and access media via voice commands and steering wheel controls.

The idea isn't just constant connectivity but safety, helping users keep their hands off of smartphones.

Ford applinkNot just for cups anymore

With eyes on the road and music in the cloud, a representative from Amazon was on hand to explain the integration of streaming music into Ford vehicles.

You'll also be able to get your news and have it read to you, even. USA Today announced that it would hire readers to record the latest stories. That's right, real human beings, not a robotic Siri voice, will be reading to you in your Fiesta or Focus.

The location-tracking app Glympse hopes to put an end to those annoying, "are you here yet?" texts that drivers often get. Drivers will be able to email a link that provides live location tracking, but only for as long as they designate.

While Ford obviously wants to please tech savvy customers, there was a focus on developers that was reminiscent of Microsoft's Steve Ballmer. "It's one thing to be customer focused, but we want to be developer focused," said Paul Mascarenas, Ford's chief technology officer.

AppLink is already in the latest versions of Ford's fastest-selling cars. The automaker hopes that going open source with its software will speed adoption of its product by both tech makers and tech users.

Path 2.9 update introduces contextualized, personalized search (update: now with video)

Path 29 update introduces contextualized, personalized search update now with video

Many of us enjoy looking through our social network history to reflect on shared memories, and Path is helping users do just that with its latest 2.9 update. Adding a comprehensive search feature that uses metadata in addition to user-defined tags, searching "Photos from Thanksgiving" pulls relevant images even if they didn't have those words in the post. The same concept applies to different days and times, like "sunset" or "weekend brunch." Other contextual categories include friends, places, seasons and the weather. There's also a "Nearby" function that taps into your phone's GPS for moments captured in your immediate vicinity.

One particular search that impressed us during a hands-on briefing is the ability to search for "emotions." Similar to the "like" feature in Facebook, Path lets users mark a post with one of five emoticons (smile, frown, laugh, gasp or heart). With the 2.9 update, you can search for all the posts that received a particular emoticon ("funny" searches all the laugh-tagged posts for example). As a little easter egg, if you search for "royal flush," you'll bring up the posts that have received at least one of each emoticon. It's more amusing than useful, but we found it cute nonetheless. The search feature is only in English to start, but the company is planning on additional language support in the future. Check after the break for more screens, or hit the links below to grab the latest version of Path from Google Play and iTunes.
