Google's Inactive Account Manager secures your digital existence after you kick the bucket

Google's Inactive Account Manager secures your digital existence when you no longer roam the Earth

If you're worried about what will happen to your mounds of digital data when you pass away, Google has just announced a feature for keeping said libraries secure. The outfit's Inactive Account Manager allows users to set time out periods of three, six, nine or 12 months for inactivity before deleting all of the stored files or having them handed over to a family member or "trusted contact." Those still left roaming the Earth can be granted access to Blogger, Drive, Gmail, Google+ and more without an application process, or they can simply be notified of the situation. Before any predetermined action is taken, the system will beam out a text and an email -- so if you're still around, you can halt matters from progressing further. Set up that digital will via the source links below and or by accessing the Google Account settings page.

'Leaked' BlackBerry 10 info shows video chat and screen sharing in BBM, new task manager

'Leaked' BlackBerry 10 info shows video chat and screen sharing in BBM, new task manager

Top dog at RIM Thorsten Heins heavily implied that video chat would be added to BBM when BlackBerry 10 showed up, and now possible confirmation of the feature has come from what are thought to be leaked presentation slides. Originating on CrackBerry's forums, the images have been taken down on various sites, leading us to believe they're legit and that strongly worded requests have led to their removal. Not only do they suggest BBM video chat is coming to BB10, but also the ability to screen share during these video calls. Another slide details a new task manager for the OS called "BlackBerry Remember," which can sync with Outlook and -- based on its description and what was uncovered in the gold SDK -- may include Evernote integration. We've contacted RIM for comment and will update you with any response, but until then, take a look at the slide above and the pair hidden after the break to assess for yourself whether they're the real deal.

Update: Here's RIM's statement, which doesn't really come as much of a surprise:

"We understand that there is a lot of excitement for BlackBerry 10. We will launch the platform on January 30th and until then we won't comment on speculation."

Apple Maps manager reportedly told to hit the road

Apple Maps manager reportedly told to hit the roadCompromising quality no more

More fallout from the iOS 6 Maps fiasco is reportedly going down: Apple is said to have fired the manager in charge of its native navigation software.

The report comes from Bloomberg, which got its information from unnamed sources familiar with the situation.

Apple Senior Vice President Eddy Cue reportedly fired Richard Williamson, head of the mapping team, in an effort to regain user trust after the shoddy Maps system was launched in September.

Cue took over both Siri and Maps after an Oct. 29 announcement that iOS chief Scott Forstall would leave the company next year.

According to Bloomberg, Cue is looking for help from mapping-technology experts outside of Apple while pressing TomTom to rectify issues in the landmark and navigation data it shares with the company to get Maps going in the right direction.

Williamson's firing is a sign that Apple is serious about fixing the issues that have left users lost (literally) and missing Google Maps while humiliating what many consider the top tech company in the world.

Apple CEO Tim Cook issued a public apology Sept. 28 admitting that Maps was inadequate and urging people to turn to competing apps until Apple Maps improves.

One of Bloomberg's sources reported that Cue is looking to establish new leaders for the Maps group, though a replacement for Williamson wasn't immediately known.

Another source said that a team at Apple has been working to fix errors in Maps, particularly its most egregious gaffs.

TechRadar asked Apple for comment and will update this story if and when the company responds.
