Apple's original iPhone marketers pondered such names as TriPod, Mobi and iPad

Apple's original iPhone marketers pondered such names as TriPod, Mobi and iPad

Ken Segall, Apple's former advertising head who coined its iProduct naming convention, told students at the University of Arizona that they could be pocketing a "TelePod" right now instead of an iPhone, according to 9to5Mac. That was among the now-strange-sounding names Cupertino pondered for the device, since one of the early concepts was a phone based on Apple's star product at the time, the iPod. Other names considered were "Mobi" and "TriPod," which was bandied about due to the device's three separate functions (phone, internet and iPod), along with iPad -- perhaps because we now know that the original iOS testbed was a tablet. In retrospect, it seems like a good thing that Apple rejected those choices ("let me show you that video on my TriPod"), but we can imagine some fur flying during marketing meet-ups to choose the ubiquitous name.

Facebook bests German watchdog in real names court tiff

Facebook bests German watchdog in real name case

After a German privacy watchdog ordered Facebook to allow the use of fake usernames "immediately," an appeals court has said nein. While the protection body in the tiny state of Schleswig-Holstein argued that Facebook's ban on pseudonyms breached the nation's privacy laws, an administrative court in the region ruled that those laws don't apply to the company, since its European HQ is located in less-stringent Ireland. Facebook argued that requiring the use of real names protects its users, but the regulator said it'll appeal the decision all the same -- thus prolonging the social network's long-running German headache.

Foursquare alters privacy policy, will show users' full names site-wide

Foursquare alters privacy policy, will show users' full names site-wideMore social privacy changes afoot

Foursquare has announced that the full names of users will soon be appearing publicly across the site.

The location-based social network has informed members of a new privacy policy that, from next month, will see the full surname of every user displayed, rather than their initial.

This means not only will the full name appear on the user's profile page, but in any comments and check-ins they make on business pages, exposing their full names to strangers.

The company said it has made the move to reduce confusion caused by full-names currently appearing in search results, but not on profile pages and in comments and check-ins.

In an email to users, Foursquare wrote: "In the original versions of Foursquare, these distinctions made sense. But we get emails every day saying that it's now confusing. So, with this change, full names are going to be public."

If wishing to maintain a semblance of anonymity on the site, users can alter their full name in the settings section of the app.

It remains to be seen whether this latest privacy change will cause a similar backlash as the recent proposed changes to Instagram's terms of service.

Foursquare also announced that it is allowing businesses to see more check-in data than just the current last three months, although didn't specify just how much.
