HTC's One pops up on its site with unlocked SIM and bootloader for $575

Alongside its developer model, HTC now has an unlocked One for the rest of us. The fetching 4.7-inch 1080p device is in stock at HTC's US store with 32GB of storage and the same powerhouse specs we saw earlier: 1.7Ghz quad-core CPU, 2GB of RAM, 4-megapixel "UltraPixel" cam and Android 4.1.2 with Sense 5. You'll also get a SIM-unlocked model, but unlike the 64GB equipped, $650 developer edition, it won't come with a liberated bootloader -- though it'll cost a touch less at $575. So, if you've been biding your time for a carrier-free version of the svelte aluminum-bodied handset, you can place your order at the source.

Nintendo of America retiring several Wii online services on June 28th

DNP Nintendo of America retiring several Wii network services on June 28th

Earlier today, Nintendo announced that several of the original Wii's online services will fade to black in the console's homeland. Adding to the carnage, the company confirmed that us yankees are far from exempt. Starting on June 28th, the Forecast Channel, News Channel, Everybody Votes Channel, the Check Mii Out Channel and the Nintendo Channel will all be taken offline. Wii Message Board and data exchange between friends are scheduled to get the axe as well. Now before you start contemplating trading in your system for its leaner, disconnected successor, we should note that the Wii Shop Channel will remain online. So there's still time to snag a copy of Super Mario 64 from the Virtual Console for nostalgia's sake.

O2 customers get free pass on Virgin Media's tube WiFi, last 12 stations go online this week

O2 hops onto London Underground with Virgin Media WiFi

O2 customers to enjoy WiFi on the Tube at no extra costVirgin Media hits 120 stations targetVast majority of Tube passengers stay connected at no extra cost

Virgin Media has signed up O2 as a wholesale partner for its WiFi on London Underground service, enabling O2 customers' access to free London Underground WiFi from June. O2 joins EE and Vodafone as a wholesale partner for Virgin Media's WiFi service meaning the vast majority of Tube passengers can stay connected with full WiFi access at no extra cost.

As part of the deal, all existing O2 customers signed up to O2 WiFi will be automatically registered for free WiFi on the Underground, taking away the need to sign up above ground or remembering a password.

Virgin Media also confirmed another 12 London Underground (LU) stations are coming online this week, including Bank, Baker Street and Earl's Court. This brings the total number of WiFi enabled stations to 120, meeting Virgin Media's and TfL's target of 120 London Underground stations online.

Mark Williamson, Head of London WiFi at Virgin Media said: "WiFi on London Underground has gone from strength to strength and we're delighted the majority of Londoners are staying connected for no extra cost. Virgin Media's unique fibre optic network means we deliver unrivalled capacity for next generation digital services both inside and outside the home, meeting the increasing demand for wireless services."

Gary Booker, Head of Consumer at O2, said: "We're excited to bring free Underground WiFi to O2 customers this summer. Our customers want to stay connected wherever they are and will soon be able to check their email, update their Facebook status, shop online, book their next holiday and stay connected to their friends and family right across Tube stations in Central London."

Gareth Powell, Director of Strategy and Service Development for London Underground, said: "Having O2 on board is excellent news for the thousands of people that use the Tube everyday. Most customers will now be able to access live travel information or use social media to plan their social life while on the move.

"WiFi on the Tube is part of how we are improving services for our customers. 2013 is London Underground's 150th anniversary, we were at the forefront of technology when the first Underground train ran and this shows how we are maintaining that tradition, using modern technology to improve customers' journeys."

Virgin Media's comprehensive WiFi portal will continue to keep all Tube passengers up-to-date with TfL travel information and great London entertainment and news for free. Virgin Media also offers a Pay As You Go service with daily, weekly and monthly passes, giving Tube passengers a range of options about how to get online underground.

Reuters: Wal-Mart looking into crowd-sourcing online delivery

Reuters WalMart looking into crowdsourcing online delivery

Walmart is considering the slightly insane sounding idea of using its in-store customers to deliver online orders to help it compete with bricks and mortar-less competitors like Amazon, according to Reuters. The big box outfit currently ships internet purchases from just 25 of its stores using the likes of FedEx to handle delivery, but plans to drastically increase that number going forward. In theory, customers could sign up for the chore and drop packages off to customers who are on their route home in exchange for a discount. CEO Joel Anderson he could "see a path to where this is crowd-sourced," adding that "this is at the brain-storming stage, but it's possible in a year or two." Naturally, there's a gauntlet of insurance, theft, fraud and legal issues Walmart would need to run first -- along with the slightly skeevy idea of having a random stranger show up with your packages.

Yandex introduces Twym online payment system for Twitter-based transfers

Yandex introduces Twym online payment system for Twitterbased transfers

Russia's Yandex has been in the online payment business for more than a decade now with its Yandex.Money service, but it's branching out into some slightly more uncharted territory with its latest addition. Dubbed Twym, the company's new service will let folks send actual rubles to other Twitter users with nothing more than a tweet like the one above. Before that transfer takes place, though, both the sender and receiver of the money will need to link their Twitter and Yandex.Money accounts, and there are expectedly some limits on the amounts that can be transfered. 100,000 rubles (or roughly $3,300) is the maximum limit allowed by Yandex, but that can be changed by each user. You can also thankfully keep things private via direct message if you'd rather not broadcast your money transfers to all your followers.

Bomberman gets unofficial web-based version, crams in up to 1,000 online players

Bomberman gets unofficial webbased version Bombermine, crams in up to 100 online players

This is about to ruin any hopes you had of a productive day. Bombermine, an unofficial version of SNES throwback, Super Bomberman, is a web-based gift that lets you face-off against up to 1,000 players in a single game. Borrowing the same scoresheet setup of a first-person shooter, you'll auto-generate within an existing game once you've picked a username. Beta servers in Europe, the US and Japan all went live earlier this week. The gameplay is unaffected by the transition, although there are some new additions, like a chat window and even a Nyancat-tainted power-up to bring this terrible, terrible time-sink up to date. Get your work in order, then meet us on the servers at the source link.

PayPal co-founder Max Levchin returns to online payments with Affirm

PayPal cofounder Max Levchin returns to online payments with Affirm

Curious what Max Levchin's been up to ever since he left Google in 2011? Well, wonder no more. Today, PayPal's co-founder revealed his return to the payment world with a new company called Affirm. Like many startups, Affirm is looking to make online payments quicker and easier, but the real question is whether you'll be willing to come along for the ride. AllThingsD managed to catch Levchin for an interview, in which he revealed that Affirm will issue credit to consumers and guarantee payment to merchants for all online transactions. Curiously, Affirm will use Facebook to verify a user's identity, and it'll also use a wide range of social and location-based data to determine an individual's credit worthiness. The payment startup will launch in beta with 1-800-Flowers as its partner, and it's said that consumers will be given 30 days to settle the resulting bill with Affirm. There's no word of what fees or interest rates will be assessed for late payments, but we imagine you'll find strong incentive to pay for that flower arrangement.

EU Apple Online Stores list Mac Pro as unavailable prior to March 1st cutoff

EU Apple Online Stores list Mac Pro as unavailable prior to March 1st cutoff

We already knew the current line of Mac Pros would be discontinued in Europe due to new regulatory standards come March 1st, but we didn't think Apple would pull the plug on its tower desktop this early. According to 9to5Mac, several European Apple Online Stores now show its Mac Pros as "currently unavailable" a couple of weeks before the computers are to be sunsetted. We're not sure if this is the case with machines in brick-and-mortar locales, but Europeans keen on the existing Mac Pro should get to their nearest reseller before it's completely out of stock. Either that or you can choose to sit tight and wait for that impending Mac Pro refresh, whenever the folks in Cupertino get around to it.

Best Buy to make online price-matching policy permanent

Best Buy to make online price-matching policy permanent

Best Buy started matching prices of online retailers in time for the holidays last year, and now it's set to make the practice permanent in an effort to cure its showroom syndrome and turn window-shopping visitors into paying customers. Come March 3rd, the policy will go into effect for the outfit's website, typical brick and mortar locations, Best Buy mobile shops and even phone orders. Officially dubbed the Low Price Guarantee, the plan will meet prices for all local competitors and a total of 19 online storefronts, including the likes of Amazon, Apple, Staples, NewEgg and Target. Also, the pricing arrangement has been expanded to additional products, but it still doesn't cover on-contract smartphones and other items. While customers might end up saving some coin with the new deal, they'll see the item return period drop from 30 days to 15. By the looks of it, company founder Richard Schulze might be getting his way with plans to save his struggling creation.

Microsoft sells out of 128GB Surface Pro models online and in some stores

Microsoft Surface Pro review wrap-up

If you were wondering how well the public would take to a Microsoft-made tablet costing $899 or more... quite well, at least from initial impressions. The 128GB Surface Pro has sold out at Microsoft's US online store, and checks suggest a lack of stock at both the company's retail stores as well as Best Buy and Staples. Canada is facing similar shortages at Best Buy and Future Shop. Not surprisingly, storage worries (since partly alleviated) have left the 64GB tablet as the only one in consistent supply, and we suspect that the 128GB model in Microsoft's Canadian store won't last for much longer. We'd be cautious before declaring the Surface Pro a runaway hit, however -- there's no word on how many units each store had, and Microsoft has refrained from reporting Surface sale numbers to date. Still, the early uptake is good news for Microsoft's first foray into designing an x86 PC, and it shows that many early adopters aren't hung up on the price.

Apple Falls to Four-Year Low in Online Customer Satisfaction SurveyDecember 27, 2012 at 4:34 am PT

TweetSharePrint

apple-store The post-Ron Johnson era did not begin well for Apple. Earlier this year, the company ousted Johnson’s successor, John Browett, as head of its retail operations following a series of rare and embarrassing cockups. Initially, those missteps appeared to be largely operational, fomenting unrest and criticism among Apple Store employees: Freezing hiring and other moves intended to scale back payroll expenses, deferring facilities repairs. But new research from analytics firm ForeSee suggest that Browett’s brief tenure at Apple may have had some negative effects on the customer-facing side of its retail operations as well. Could that really be the case?

According to ForeSee’s annual Holiday E-Retail Satisfaction Index, compiled from 24,000 customer surveys gathered between Thanksgiving and Christmas, customer satisfaction with Apple’s online store slipped three points this year, falling to 80 from the 83 points it captured in 2011. That decline was among the biggest Foresee charted this year, and it left Apple with its lowest score on the firm’s consumer satisfaction index in four years. (Ironically, J.C. Penney — where Ron Johnson is now CEO — was another of Foresee’s big decliners this holiday season).

1

Why the sudden drop? There’s no simple explanation, though it’s easy enough to lay the blame on Browett. Following his tenure, the company not only forfeited its second place ranking on the Foresee index, but fell out of the top five as well. Sure, the decline was measured after his ouster, but not so far after that he doesn’t bear some responsibility. That said, there are obviously other factors at work here as well.

ForeSee’s surveys measure four elements of customer satisfaction: Merchandise appeal, competitiveness of price, Web site functionality and Web site content. Clearly, not all of those elements were under Browett’s control. And it’s not evident where, exactly, Apple suffered declines. ForeSee says only that “Web site functionality” is a top priority for improvement at Apple. It’s worth noting, though, that that functionality isn’t so different from what it was last year, when Apple placed in ForeSee’s top five.

Keeping that in mind — and our perceptions of price and product appeal, as well — Apple’s diminished customer satisfaction score seems more the result of consumer caprice than anything else. Have the company’s prices and the appeal of its products really changed that drastically from 2011 when it scored higher on the ForeSee index?

“The luster of Apple is fading a bit,” Larry Freed, president and CEO of ForeSee told AllThingsD. “Keeping up with consumer’s rising expectations of the online customer experience is no easy task, but not keeping up can lead to decline in loyalty, word of mouth and revenue growth. In particular, even though Apple gets top dollar for their products, price is an area weakness for the company when it comes to satisfaction. Apple’s site might be due for some changes, and the usefulness, convenience and variety of features on the site presents the biggest opportunity for Apple to improve the customer experience.”

Apple did not respond to a request for comment.

In Depth: Jubilee Time Capsule: Inside the world's largest online history project

This year saw Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II celebrate her Diamond Jubilee and 60 years as head of the Commonwealth.

To mark both The Queen's Jubilee and to tell the story of the last 60 years, the Royal Commonwealth Society created the Jubilee Time Capsule.

The Jubilee Time Capsule is an online social archive, containing stories from people across all 54 Commonwealth countries, either as a written memory, a film, an audio recording or a photographic memory.

The time capsule marks the eventful six decades The Queen has seen, from Accession Day on 6th February 1952 to 2011's Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton.

These memories recount moments of Royal and historical significance, as well as personal histories, including weddings, family migration stories and individual tales of conflict and loss.

When The Queen became Head of the Commonwealth in 1952, there were eight member states - there are now 54. During Her Majesty's reign, 42 Commonwealth members gained independence from Britain and all chose to join the Commonwealth.

All Commonwealth residents, both adults and children, were invited to contribute a story about their family, community, country or the Commonwealth itself, from any time during Her Majesty's reign.

Over 37,000 people submitted contributions, via jubileetimecapsule.org and an Apple app.

Celebrities and members of the Royal Family to have taken part in the project include Prince Harry, Princess Eugenie, Paralympic and Olympic athlete Oscar Pistorius, Ed Miliband, Nick Clegg and William Hague.

The most popular day for people to remember was 29th April 2011 – the Royal Wedding – with more than 200 entries.

A massive 80,000 stories were submitted into the Jubilee Time Capsule in total, creating crowd-sourced People's History - an authentic legacy of the last 60 years.

The mass of entries was whittled down to the 60 'best' memories by a panel of distinguished judges, including the director general of The Royal Photographic Society, the Royal Librarian and Telegraph Deputy Editor Benedict Brogan.

These selected entries have formed the Diamond (re)Collection, and were presented to The Queen by the Royal Commonwealth Society during Her Majesty's tour of the Society's headquarters, on 14th November.

Jubilee

The entire Diamond (re)Collection was made public on the internet, immediately following this.

The 60 photographs, drawings, poems, essays and videos were given to The Queen on a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet PC – the digital time capsule.

The tablet PC was presented to The Queen by 12-year-old John Samson, from Malawi, whose contributing essay, 'The day I wore my best clothes', was about the day he received his first school uniform.

John won the Royal Commonwealth Essay Junior Prize, which ran alongside the Jubilee Time Capsule project.

The tablet PC will be stored at Windsor Castle as part of the Royal Collection, which is held in trust by the Sovereign for her successors and the nation.

The Royal Collection already includes technology, including PCs and DVDs, as well as art, furniture and other memorabilia, but this is the first artifact on a PC tablet to be added.

Danny Sriskandarajah, Director of the Royal Commonwealth Society said: "The Commonwealth has been at the heart of Her Majesty's Diamond Jubilee celebrations and we wanted to do something innovative to celebrate the association and the 2.1 billion people that live in it.

"The Jubilee Time Capsule is an amazing collection of stories and memories that shows the shared history and aspirations of the Commonwealth's citizens."

The first date in the Jubilee Time Capsule timeline is 6th February 1952 – A National Parks employee in Kenya shares a photo and remembers the day Princess Elizabeth found out about her father's death and her imminent accession to the throne.

Some of the other best entries are of 7th June 1954 – The legacy of Alan Turing as remembered by his former PhD student, and 14th November 1990 – a personal account by Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius, who recalls his childhood realisation that disability is not synonymous with disadvantage.

Many of the children's entries are very special and poignant; including one about 15th November 2011 – The day Woody Street's dad was awarded his Green Badge black cab license for passing 'The Knowledge'.

Jubilee

Although only 60 of the 80,000 stories submitted made it onto The Queen's tablet and into The Royal Collection, the others are by no means wasted.

On the contrary, the complete library of 80,000 entries will remain available online in perpetuity, forming part of the world's biggest online history project and occupying around 150GB of digital space.

The online capsule is unique in its ease of accessibility for such a large social archive, which will be of great value to teachers, academics and historians, as well as the general public, as it provides such a unique look at the last 60 years.

Jubilee Time Capsule: 60 years of the Commonwealth on a tablet PCAll of the 80,000 entries submitted into what's become the world's largest online history project will be kept avaliable indefinately at www.jubileetimecapsule.org

All of the 60 entries that made it into the Diamond (re)Collection are both interesting and arresting and easily accessed as a collection at the Jubilee Time Capsule website, under the 'Collections' tab in the top right.

There is also a People's Choice Collection and the option to view entries by decade, region, Science, Culture & Education, Politics & Environment, Life & Royalty, or to simply browse through the capsule in its entirety.

There's also a search function, should you be looking for a particular subject or event.

If you have an iPhone or iPad you can also download the free Jubilee Time Capsule app, which has a great easy-to-use interface.

Jubilee Time Capsule: 60 years of the Commonwealth on a tablet PCApple's app for iPhone and iPad has a intuitive interface and makes browsing the events of the past 60 years lots of fun

The online platform for the Jubilee Time Capsule is provided by Capsool, a company that creates (re)collections - social archives that collect people's stories and memories.

Track Santa Claus online on Christmas Eve 2012: A guide

More by Ian Paul

Children across the world are anxiously awaiting the arrival of Santa Claus Monday evening; luckily, in 2013 we have numerous ways to track the Jolly Old Elf during Christmas Eve.

As usual, the North American Aerospace Defense Command is tracking Santa via radar this season and displaying Saint Nick's location online.

But this year, NORAD has partnered with Microsoft and Bing to show Santa's every moment instead of Google, the Can-American organization's online partner since 2004.

Not to be outdone by its search rival, Google is also tracking Santa's midnight ride on its own.

If you've got little ones focused on tracking Santa Monday morning into the evening, here's a basic guide to all the ways you can track Santa tonight.

Norad may have a new online partner, but the military-grade Santa Tracker is still available at NoradSanta.org. Here you will be greeted with a Bing Map similar to Google's version in previous years. You can see where Santa has been, thanks to the gift icons that dot the map, and the Tracker offers a breakdown of where Saint Nick was last spotted and his next scheduled location.

A running counter shows how many gifts Santa has delivered this year. If you click on a present on the map, a pop-up window will show a YouTube video, if available, about Santa's journey in that region and some facts about the location from Wikipedia.

Clicking on the “Watch Santa!” button will take you to the latest videos showing Santa's journey, posted to Google's YouTube—proving that even the military can't completely escape Google's online power. Norad's site also features a map of Santa's North Pole village that contains games, music, and other activities.

Google may have been discharged from Norad, but the search giant is still tracking Santa at Google.com/santatracker. When you first land on the site, in true Google style, you are treated to a data dashboard showing Santa's previous location, next scheduled stop, time until arrival, total number of presents delivered, distance traveled, and his latest status update.

You can also click on the Santa icon to see his journey on the map without the dashboard cluttering up the display.

Google also offers on the site three Christmas themed video games called Jetpack, Present Drop, and Racer. And, as Google has offered in previous years, you can create a personalized phone call from Santa to any North American phone number between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. local time. All of these features are available by clicking the “Santa Tracker” box in the bottom left corner of the site.

Santa's major stops are signified with a gift-themed Google Maps marker. Clicking on a location shows you its name, Santa's time of arrival at that location, the current weather (courtesy of the Weather Channel), and the number of presents delivered there.

You can also access photos of the place pulled from Google Maps' partnership with Panoramio, and data from Wikipedia. Unfortunately, you can't enter your own location into the map to see when Santa is scheduled to arrive in your neck of the woods. But maybe Google will include that feature in next year's map.

If you want to track Santa while you're on the go, you can choose from Norad's app for Android and iOS by Visionbox or Google's Santa Tracker for Android.

Norad's app hasn't changed much and, similar to previous years, features a tracking map as well as a game. This year the game is called Thin Ice.

Google's Santa Tracker app for Android isn't really an app at all and only features links to opening Google Maps or Google Earth on your Android device to track Santa. Google offers no accessory games or other features.

For iOS users who prefer Google's Santa, you can still use Google.com/santatracker on your iPad or iPhone and it will work just fine. You can also place an icon for the site on your homescreen by tapping  the 'Action' key in Safari and selecting “Add to Home Screen.”

Google has also created a Chrome extension you can add to your browser.

The Santa Tracker extension gives you a summary of how many miles Santa has traveled and clicking on the browser icon shows you the tracker dashboard with vital Santa stats.

Getting social with Santa this year is pretty similar to other years. You can get updates on Santa's location via Twitter with @NoradSanta. Norad's Santa is also on Facebook. Google+ users can get Santa-centric updates all day Monday from the Google Maps G+ page.

You can track Santa using Google Earth on both PCs and mobile devices. This will show you an animated version of Santa flying across specific locations. You can find a link to the Santa Tracker in Google Earth's Tour Guide feature.

Android users can get a direct link to Santa's journey on Google Earth mobile using the Santa Tracker app for Android.

Technology offers many ways to follow Santa's journey around the globe Monday night, but here's a word of warning for parents with particularly observant children. The Microsoft/Norad Santa and Google's Santa are not flying on the same itinerary, so you may want to stick with one Santa in order to avoid any repeat Santa landings.

How Much of Your Holiday Shopping Did You Do Online?

This story will display in ...Dec 22, 2012 4:00 PM

How Much of Your Holiday Shopping Did You Do Online? We live in a cyberland future where malls exist inside your computer and the presents you buy are magically delivered to you by, well, delivery men. With each Christmas that passes, online shopping becomes more and more the norm until eventually brick and mortar stores will be nothing but vacant museums of an age gone by.

How much did you contribute to that future this year? Did you do most of your shopping online? All of it? None of it? Is that even possible any more?

Super Bowl to be streamed online for the second consecutive year

streaming, cbs, super bowl, nfl, online streaming, pro bo

Exactly one year ago to the day, the NFL announced that Super Bowl XLVI would be streamed live online and to select mobile phones for the first time ever. That experiment apparently went well enough that organizers have decided to follow up with a repeat for Super Bowl XLVII set to air on February 3, 2013 from New Orleans, Louisiana.

According to officials, more than 2.1 million people tuned in to watch the big game last year using a computer, making it the most-watched single-game sports event to be streamed legally over the Internet.

The plan is to do the same this year, although CBS will be broadcasting Super Bowl XLVII this year instead of NBC. We’re also hearing that Verizon Wireless subscribers will be able to get in on the action as well using the NFL Mobile app in the event they aren’t near a computer or a television.

Again, just like last year, wild-card playoff games and the Pro Bowl all-star game will stream online in the same manner, perhaps serving as a test bed for America’s game come early February. The play-off games will air on Saturday, January 5 while the Pro Bowl will take place on Sunday, January 27 from Hawaii. Viewers can log on through NFL.com and CBSSports.com to watch the games this year.

Streaming the game online not only introduces added convenience but there will also be additional camera angles, live statistics and other viewing enhancements, according to the NFL.

Details on Nvidia's Tegra 4 processor leak online, packing 72-core GPU

Chinese tech site Chip Hell has leaked what they claim are details about Nvidia’s next generation mobile processor. Codenamed “Wayne”, the Tegra 4 is said to be built using a 28-nanometer manufacturing process, a 4-Plus-1 Quad Core Eagle CPU and a whopping 72-core GPU. If you recall, the Tegra 3 is built on the less efficient 40-nanometer process.

The +1 core on the CPU will perform battery saving duties. Rumor has it that Nvidia will be utilizing four ARM Cortex-A15 cores for the CPU. According to the slides, the graphics subsystem is 20 times faster than the Tegra 2 and six times faster than current generation Tegra 3 parts. The GPU will reportedly be able to support displays up to 2,560 x 1,600 resolution and 1080p output at up to 120Hz.

If true, that’s some serious speed that will put pressure on other SoC makers to step their game up significantly. There will also be support for USB 3.0, dual-channel DDR3L memory and what’s described as a Super Speed Imaging chip.

It’s likely that we will hear more from Nvidia about the Tegra 4 at next month’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Nvidia chief executive Jen-Hsun Huang will be leading a keynote for the company during the show which is likely when they will unveil it.

Keep in mind, however, that even if we do see the Tegra 4 show up at CES, it’s unlikely that it’ll make its way to consumer devices and in your hands anytime soon.

The First 10 Minutes of the New Star Trek Into Darkness Leaked Online

Dec 17, 2012 3:35 PM

You've got to watch this: a Russian site has obtained the first ten minutes of the new Star Trek Into Darkness movie. It's quite blurry but holy mother of Spock!—what a ride.

Update: We got a cease and desist order, so we are taking the clip down. They allowed us to include some captures from the clip. Here they are.

It seems to be the 3D preview shown at the beginning of the midnight IMAX showing of the Hobbit on December 14th. The video contains the first nine and a half minutes, plus assorted sequences. Someone apparently snuck a camera into the theater and recorded the whole thing without being detected. That doesn't happen much these days.

In it you can see the villain, presumably Gary Mitchell, played by Benedict Cumberbatch. Then it switches to an Indiana Jones-ish scene in which some aliens are chasing Kirk and Bones through a fuchsia forest. Things start getting complicated after that, with a cliffhanger in which Spock is left in the middle of an active volcano.

It looks like the movie is going to be awesome—is it May 17th yet? [Yandex]

BOSTON/CHARLOTTE, North Carolina | Fri Dec 14, 2012 11:21am EST

BOSTON/CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Reuters) - Bank of America Corp, JPMorgan Chase & Co and U.S. Bancorp and other major U.S. banks seem to have stopped a group of hacker activists from seriously disrupting their online banking operations.

A financial services industry organization and several cyber security companies said a group of "hactivists" that impeded access to some major U.S. online banking sites in September had so far failed to gain traction in a second campaign that began this week.

"There has been no impact to critical financial systems," the Financial Services Information Sharing and Analysis Center, or FS-ISAC, said in a statement.

Tom Kellermann, vice president of cyber security at security software maker Trend Micro Inc, said the banks had been "very successful.

"I wouldn't see any prolonged outages for the major financial institutions in the coming year."

Arbor Networks, which sells equipment that companies can use to protect their websites against attack, said banks had bolstered their defenses since the last round of attacks in September.

"Everyone has been through this once or twice," said Dan Holden, an Arbor director. "There is just a better level of preparedness."

On Monday, a group that calls itself the Qassam Cyber Fighters said on a website called Pastebin.com that it was planning attacks against a group of five banks that also included PNC Financial Services Group Inc and SunTrust Banks Inc. The same group took credit for the disruptions in September.

U.S. Bancorp spokesman Tom Joyce said the regional bank's website was performing well, but some customers might be experiencing intermittent delays. "We can assure customers that their data and funds are secure," he said.

PNC said its website had unusually heavy traffic in the past several days, causing occasional difficulties in accessing it. Bank of America said it was monitoring its systems, which were operational.

SunTrust and JPMorgan declined to comment.
