Laser scans objects in 3D from half a mile away, scientists just need reason to use it

Laser scans objects in 3D from half a mile away, scientists look for excuse to fire it

3D scanning at a range of 0.62 miles? It just became possible, thanks to a laser camera developed by physicists at Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh, UK. You can pretty much see how it works from the images above -- laser beams are bounced off the target and the duration of their return journey is measured precisely enough to detect millimeter depth changes even at extreme distances. Speaking of which, the researchers believe they could pump the range up to 10 miles with a bit of extra research, and even shrink the blaster down to make it "fully portable" in less than five years. Who knows, someday it might even work around corners. But there's a problem: skin doesn't reflect the beams properly, which means people can't be accurately scanned unless they also happen to be ringwraiths. As a result, the researchers seem slightly at loss as to what to do with the technology, with their best suggestions so far being watching the growth of foliage or tracking the movement of rocks. We'd try to think up some other ideas, were it not for the distracting and utterly irrelevant Nazgul v Wilhelm video embedded after the break.

Did Google make its latest Android statue out of chrome for a reason?

Did Google make its latest Android statue out of chrome for a reason

When Google staffer Paul Wilcox started throwing pebbles at his girlfriend's office window, he never expected to be confronted by an angry giant Android made out of chrome. But crazy things happen at Mountain View all the time and Wilcox was quick to recover his composure.

"What have you done with my girlfriend?" he cried. And then, "why, of all things, are you made out of chrome?!"

Eventually Wilcox realized it was just a statue, recently put up in the mostly-green robot's honor, and that his girlfriend was safe and well. (Honestly, we just invented the whole girlfriend thing for dramatic effect, and we don't know where she works.) Anyways, the question remains: why this particular metallic finish? Is it to mark the constant updates to the Chrome browser on Android devices? Possibly. Or could it be, as MobileGeeks suggests, some oblique reference to Android apps running in a Chrome browser on some other OS? We don't know, but imagine this: an Android app running in a Chrome browser running as an Android app running in a Chrome browser... Freaky, right?

A&E debuts video streaming app for iPad, gives reason to be happy, happy, happy

Whether you're into rooting for Jarrod and Brandi as they pillage storage units or you prefer gaping as the Robertson clan battles pesky beavers on their land, we've a good feeling that you'll dig A&E's new video streaming app for the iPad. Like the network's website, the app provides access to full episodes and exclusive clips from Storage Wars, Duck Dynasty, The First 48 and many other popular shows. For the moment, Comcast subscribers will find access to even more content, but A&E plans to spread its love to others the near future. Sadly, AirPlay compatibility is nowhere to be found in this version, but A&E promises that it's in the pipeline. Oh yeah, you heard that right: it's on like Donkey Kong!

Update: Oh, and if that wasn't enough, you'll now find streaming apps for The History Channel and Lifetime, too. We've linked 'em up for your convenience.

[Thanks, Chris]
