Xperia Z goes on sale at the US Sony Store for $630, Xperia ZL gets a price cut

Xperia Z goes on sale at US Sony Store for $630, Xperia ZL takes a price cut

Americans wanting one of 2013's Sony flagships have had access to the Xperia ZL for awhile, but they've had to chase down an importer if they wanted the glass-backed chic of the Xperia Z. Sony has quietly put that dilemma to rest by offering the Xperia Z through the US Sony Store. For $630, locals can get an unlocked version of the flagship in black, purple or white, albeit only with HSPA+ 3G for carriers like AT&T and T-Mobile; there's no LTE to be found. Those who do want 4G speeds won't have to pay a premium, however, when Sony is selling the LTE-equipped ZL for the same $630. While neither deal will be quite as tempting as subsidized phones at major carriers, those willing to pay full price for Sony gear can now afford to be a little picky.

Google Fiber for iPad hits the app store

Google Fiber for iPad hits the app store

Let it never be said that Google doesn't show its iOS-toting fans love. Even when it's not bringing apps to Apple's platform first, it usually makes sure to offer its wares on the competing ecosystem. It may have taken a while, but the Google Fiber remote app is now available outside of Android land. You'll need to have an iPad (sorry, no pocketable version here), but just like its Jelly Bean-bound cousin, you can change channels, schedule recordings and fire up on-demand programming. The free app is available now through iTunes, though, it obviously won't do you much good outside of Google Fiber's limited coverage area.

iTunes Store update lets you buy media today, download it tomorrow

iTunes Store now lets you purchase media now, download it later

While we like the convenience of shopping the iTunes Store from any device, that doesn't mean we want the download wherever we happen to be -- just ask anyone trying to buy the Beatles Box Set using a flaky coffee shop hotspot. As of a quiet update noticed by Macworld, customers won't have to risk a long wait for some of their impulse purchases. Buy from iTunes on any device and you now have the option to defer very large downloads, whether they're music box sets, movies or TV shows. Shoppers have to live in an area where iTunes in the Cloud is up and running for downloads elsewhere, but that's about the only major catch. Swing by the source link for Apple's explanation of how its delayed gratification works for each format.

HTC's One pops up on its site with unlocked SIM and bootloader for $575

Alongside its developer model, HTC now has an unlocked One for the rest of us. The fetching 4.7-inch 1080p device is in stock at HTC's US store with 32GB of storage and the same powerhouse specs we saw earlier: 1.7Ghz quad-core CPU, 2GB of RAM, 4-megapixel "UltraPixel" cam and Android 4.1.2 with Sense 5. You'll also get a SIM-unlocked model, but unlike the 64GB equipped, $650 developer edition, it won't come with a liberated bootloader -- though it'll cost a touch less at $575. So, if you've been biding your time for a carrier-free version of the svelte aluminum-bodied handset, you can place your order at the source.

Chinese government orders Apple to remove 'obscene content' from its App Store

As a part of a sweep that cited some 198 websites, China government officials directed Apple to remove obscene content listed in its App Store in the country. Apple recently faced criticism about, and eventually apologized for, its warranty policy in China. The Financial Times reported an app was pulled earlier this month for providing access to banned books, just days after the warranty issue surface. A report by Bloomberg suggests Apple includes a quote from research firm owner Mark Tanner suggesting Apple needs to do more to enhance its relations with the government to curry favor with consumers. Whatever the case, the listing on state-run news agent Xinhua does not specify the banned content, although it's probably still available on App Stores in other regions.

Windows Store unofficially reaches 50,000 apps

Windows Store unofficially reaches 50,000 apps

It can be scary mustering developer support for a brand-new app platform -- just ask BlackBerry. Microsoft may feel slightly relaxed, then, if MetroStore Scanner's unofficial estimates are on the ball. It sees over 50,380 active Windows Store apps as of this writing, which isn't bad for a shop that reportedly had less than half this amount back in November. Whether or not you consider it progress compared to the rest of the market is another matter: the tally is a big leap over the estimated 14,000 apps in the Mac App Store, but it won't make either Apple or Google break out in a cold sweat when compared against the six-digit app counts of their mobile app stores. Microsoft currently declines to confirm the numbers, although the company tells us that the app count may vary from country to country. For now, it's safe to presume that a fair number of app writers are onside with Microsoft's tile- and touch-driven vision of the future.

Apple adds in-app purchase disclaimer to iTunes App Store pages

Apple adds inapp purchase disclaimer to iTunes App Store pages

iDevices make for great 21st century babysitters, what with all the free, kid-friendly apps. But that techno-garderie does have an unfortunate downside for distracted parents: unauthorized in-app purchases made by children. In response to lawsuits and a general brouhaha over unwittingly amassed charges, Apple is now including an "Offers In-App Purchases" disclaimer to freemium apps it hosts within the iTunes App Store -- not the storefronts found on iOS, the desktop app or web links. The Guardian was able to verify that the change is indeed new, but bizarrely enough it doesn't surface on the platforms where most users (read: children) would first download a game anyway. It's reasonable to assume the warning will extend to the rest of the company's platforms soon, but the safety of your wallet is still not guaranteed.

Opera browser beta for Android hits Play store with WebKit horsepower

Opera browser for Android beta hits Play store beta packing webkit horsepower

Opera browser made a seismic shift when it dropped its long-in-the-tooth Presto engine in favor of WebKit, and now you can see the changes for yourself. It's up for grabs in beta on Google Play, packing the same rendering engine as its Chrome and Safari counterparts along with a handful of extra features. Those include an updated speed dial page for easier launching of favorite sites, off-road mode to conserve data, a discover tab and HTML5 support. We haven't seen it yet on iOS and there's no date for a final release, so keep in mind you'll be test-piloting the still-beta app -- check the source to grab it.

Apple's latest 21.5-inch iMac hits the refurb store for $1,099

Apple's latest 215inch iMac hits the refurb store for $1,099

It's a rite of passage of sorts -- Apple's "skinny" iMac has now spent enough time on Earth to be deemed an appropriate addition to the company's refurb ranks. The base late-2012 configuration, which sports a 21.5-inch 1080p IPS screen, a 2.7GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 processor, 8 gigs of RAM, a 1TB hard drive and that new super-svelte housing can now be had at a $200 discount, priced at $1,099. As with many Apple refurbished products, you likely won't be the device's very first owner, but it will arrive in tip-top condition, with a one-year warranty to boot. As always, "supplies are limited," so if you don't mind having a second-hand system on your desk, in exchange for a slightly thicker wallet, you best make your way over to the source link to snag your very own discounted machine today.

Nexus 4 wireless charger now on sale for $60 at Google Play Store (update)

Nexus 4 wireless charger now on sale for $60 at Google Play Store

When the Nexus 4 was first announced, we had a glimpse of a wireless charging dock that was meant to go with it. Well, good news for folks in the United States, as the induction dock has just popped up on the Play Store, and Nexus 4 owners can order one now for just $59.99. It puts out 1 amp of juice at 5 volts and joins a host of other Qi-enabled wireless chargers -- cord cutters rejoice!

[Thanks, Luis]

Update: As tipster Gen points out, the Nexus 4 in the image above shows a battery status screen that we haven't seen before. Google hasn't made mention of any software changes just yet though.

Update 2: The good folks at Pocket-Lint have discovered that the battery status screen is actually a third party widget app that can be had at the Play Store for $1.99

DNP Microsoft's first international store now open for business

Canadian Windows fans rejoice! The rumors have panned out, as Microsoft opened its first permanent non-US retail location on Friday at the Yorkdale Shopping Centre in Toronto. To celebrate this milestone, the company had a grand opening event with special guest Wayne Gretzky and a performance by the band Train. For the sake of die-hard Windows fans everywhere, here's hoping Microsoft is just scratching the Surface of its international expansion plans.
