Microsoft offers Windows 8 Pro upgrade to students for $70, starting February 1st

Windows 8 Pro boxes

The time when everyday PC owners can get a cheap Windows 8 Pro upgrade will soon be at an end, but that doesn't mean all prospective users will be left in the lurch. As of February 1st, the day the $40 promo pricing ends, American students and faculty members can download an upgrade to Pro for $70. A total of 49 other countries will also receive student discounts that take effect in a staggered rollout between February 21st and March 19th. The new pricing clearly won't be as much of a bargain as it is in the waning hours of January, but it's sight better than the $200 anyone outside of academia will need to pay.

All month long, students can take $50 off the Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8.9

The Amazon Kindle Fire HD was the online retailers hottest product during the holiday shopping season, which really is no surprise. While Amazon felt it had the 7 inch end of the market covered, it needed a product that might compete better with the Apple iPad mini and its 7.9 inch panel, the 10 inch screen on the Google Nexus 10 and the fourth-generation of the Apple iPad with its 9.7 inch display. That is why in November, Amazon launched the Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8.9. With a resolution of 1920 x 1200, the 8.9 inch slate offers a pixel density of 254ppi. That tops the 162ppi on the Apple iPad mini and comes close to the 264ppi on the fourth-generation full-sized iPad. Pricing-wise, the Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8.9 is priced at $299 vs. $329 for the Apple iPad mini and $499 for the full-sized iOS tablet. If you're a student, Amazon is willing to take a $50 haircut off the price of the tablet during all of January, giving the device an even larger edge against the competition. To take advantage of the deal, you must not only be a student, but you also have to be a member of Amazon Prime. You can have a free 6 month Amazon Prime membership, or the paid membership for one year which costs $39.

If you need more than just a Wi-Fi connection, the deal is also good for the Wi-Fi/4G LTE version of the tablet. The Wi-Fi only model is available in 16GB or 32GB at prices of $249 and $319 respectively after applying the discount. The Wi-Fi/4G LTE variant can be purchased with 32GB or 64GB for $449 and $549 respectively, after the discount is applied from the price.
