Samsung NX2000 mirrorless camera hits the FCC, may carry a touch UI

Samsung NX2000 mirrorless camera hits the FCC, may carry a smart OS

Samsung may not have shaken up its mirrorless camera line with the very evolutionary NX1100, but there's hints at the FCC of bigger things in store. A filing at the US agency has confirmed the existence of an unannounced NX2000. On the surface, it's similar to its ancestors: labeling and tests point to a 20.3-megapixel CMOS sensor, an overall familiar body design and the presence of 802.11n WiFi. However, there's talk that the real focus for the NX2000 may be the interface, not image quality. A purported photo making the rounds at Photo Rumors (after the break) lines up with the FCC listing while showing an unexpected back that includes both a touchscreen and a hardware home key -- although nothing is definite, it suggests Samsung could bring a smarter, possibly Android-based interface to its mirrorless series. We'll only know just how clever a camera the NX2000 is when it's more official than a mix of regulatory clearances and rumors.

Touch Bionics' latest 'i-limb' offers a powered rotating thumb, smartphone controls

Touch Bionics Unveils Next Generation Prosthetic Hand with Powered Thumb Rotation
Company announces global availability of i-limb(TM) ultra revolution and latest biosim(TM) mobile application

LIVINGSTON, United Kingdom & MANSFIELD, Mass., Apr 11, 2013 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Touch Bionics, a provider of world-leading prosthetic technologies, today announced a significant advance to the company's groundbreaking i-limb(TM) technology. The i-limb ultra revolution, featuring a powered rotating thumb, 24 grip options and extra sensitive electrodes, is the first upper limb prosthesis that can be controlled via a mobile application.

"We are pleased to introduce the i-limb ultra revolution and the latest biosim mobile control app," said Ian Stevens, CEO of Touch Bionics. "We believe that the i-limb ultra revolution, with powered thumb rotation and the ability to quickly access multiple grip patterns, offers unparalleled dexterity and control, enabling wearers to more easily perform activities of daily living and thus increase their quality of life."

The powered rotation of the thumb can be either controlled directly by the wearer's muscle signals, or can move automatically into position as part of a pre-set grip pattern or gesture. The new Quick Grips(TM) option from the biosim mobile control app allows the user to automatically activate 24 different grip patterns and gestures on their prosthesis with a single tap of the screen.

"The i-limb ultra revolution is the most advanced, and easy to use prosthesis that I have ever worn," said Bertolt Meyer, i-limb wearer. "Powered thumb rotation, combined with the mobile app and quick access to all these new grips, gives me natural hand function that I never imagined would be possible."

i-limb ultra revolution features:

-- Powered rotating thumb and individually articulating fingers offering unparalleled dexterity and reliable access to precision grip patterns.

-- New biosim mobile control application compatible with latest Apple(R) products gives the wearer greatly expanded control capability via 24 Quick Grips each from a single screen tap.

-- New remote electrodes offer a higher level of sensitivity giving the wearer enhanced control.

-- A variety of flexible wrist options enabling more natural positioning of hand when gripping or picking up objects.

-- Aesthetic covering options available via the livingskin product line, including i-limb skin natural and i-limb skin match covers customized to match skin tone and appearance.

biosim mobile control app features:

-- 24 Quick Grips - Instant access to grip patterns with a single screen tap greatly expands prosthesis control.

-- Favorites - Editable collections of grips customized for daily needs. For example, wearers can select the 'work' favorite, which triggers the i-limb into preferred grips such as typing, holding papers, or using a mouse.

-- Hand Health Check - Activates prosthesis diagnostic to ensure the i-limb is functioning properly.

-- Training - Access training modes to help the wearer learn how to access all of the functionality available.

-- Compatibility - Available for download on Apple App Store and compatible with several Apple devices.

Support for Clinicians

All new i-limb products are supported by the Touch Care(TM) service and support package, Touch Link(TM) Academy certification program, on-site occupational therapy training, and reimbursement support services.

Galaxy S IV dam springs another leak with floating touch and SmartPause videos

Galaxy S IV dam springs another leak with floating touch and SmartPause videos

Samsung's been laying on the marketing glitz for the upcoming Galaxy S IV ahead of its Samsung Unpacked 2013 event later today, perhaps because there'll be few surprises at the actual show thanks to all the breaches. A pair of videos from serial leaker IT168 have just been outed allegedly showing two new TouchWiz features from the upcoming handset: SmartPause and floating touch. The latter will display larger image thumbnails or an info box for contacts when you hover your finger over either, while SmartPause stops video from playing when you look away from it -- an eye-detection feature that had been rumored previously but never spotted in action. Naturally, this may not be the final hardware they're playing with, but you can judge for yourself after the break -- just turn down your speakers first, as the videos are a tad noisy.

Alcatel One Touch Evo 7 makes FCC pitstop, still runs Ice Cream Sandwich

Alcatel One Touch EVO 7 makes FCC pitstop, still runs Ice Cream Sandwich

If it's ICS, you can be sure it ain't fresh. And Alcatel seems to know that, but it's offering a base version of its non-HD One Touch Evo 7 tablet that runs that so very 2011 Android OS anyway. Yes, this is the very same 7-inch "modular" slate we saw at this past CES, except now it's made an appearance at the FCC, indicating market availability on the horizon. Just in case you need a refresher, Alcatel's outfitted the tab with a WSVGA (1,024 x 600) display, single-core 1GHz Rockchip CPU buffered by 1GB RAM and 4GB of internal storage -- nothing to get excited about, really. All the goods are here on display, from test setup shots to its user manual. So, feel free to peruse the source below for a glimpse at the official docs.

Zenbook Touch U500VZ quietly surfaces on ASUS website, price and availability still MIA

Zenbook Touch U500VZ surfaces on ASUS website

A 15-inch Zenbook Touch U500VZ has quietly appeared on ASUS' website. Though the company has yet to announce this model officially, it's hardly a surprise, as its 13-inch UX31A is already available with a capacitive display, and the line's 11-inch models are confirmed to get touchscreens as well. Essentially, it looks to be the UX51Vz with a touch panel, as this machine's other specs look familiar. It packs a Core i7-3632QM processor, discrete NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M graphics and dual 256GB SSDs. Naturally, the touchscreen features IPS technology and boasts the same 1080p resolution as other Zenbooks. Though the laptop is listed online, price and availability aren't yet clear, but for now you can click through to the website and feast your eyes.

[Thanks, Bob]

Ubuntu Countdown Timer Hints at Touch Support

Direct your browser to Ubuntu's homepage and you'll be greeted to a countdown timer that's set to expire on January 2, 2013 (tomorrow). It reads, "So close, you can almost touch it," a fairly obvious indication that Canonical plans on announcing a touch-friendly version of Ubuntu, just like Windows 8. Well, not just like Windows 8, though Ubuntu is headed towards a universal user interface (UI) that will look and function the same across multiple devices.

Canonical founder Mark Shuttleworth revealed as much during a question & answer session on Slashdot last month, indicating that Ubuntu is close to realizing his goal of unifying the OS.

"Let's make one OS that runs on the phone AND on your supercomputer. We're close to that now - we know Ubuntu makes a great cloud OS and a great server OS and a great desktop. So I think the next frontier is to create a seamless experience from the embedded world to the cloud. And yes, that's very much what we are focused on at Canonical," Shuttleworth stated.

It's the same approach Microsoft has taken with Windows in Windows 8, and the challenge Canonical faces is the same, in that it must find a way to unify the OS without alienating a subset of users. Many would argue that Microsoft failed that part of the challenge on the desktop.

In any event, we'll have more details to share tomorrow.

Apple granted design patent for fourth-gen iPod touch, reminds us of the shorter, plumper past

Image

Merry Christmas! The USPTO is celebrating in a big way, with the copyright stamp making some pretty big rounds today. First up is a design patent for an iPod touch, which Cupertino filed back in August of 2011. It looks to be the fourth-gen model from 2010, especially given that the patent focuses on the very rounded edges. This iPod touch was the first version to include both front- and rear-facing cameras, and in any case, the design is miles thicker and shorter than this year's touch. As Patently Apple points out, this document also happens to be one of the last to list Steve Jobs as an inventor.

IBM's 5 in 5 predicts cognitive computing will complement our senses, virtualize touch

IBM's 5 in 5 predicts how cognitive computing will complement our senses

IBM thinks cognitive computers that can adapt to their surroundings will be a large part of our future, and that their ability to take unprocessed data and find patterns in different environments will augment our sensory interactions with our surroundings. While many of us associate haptic feedback with video game controllers, IBM says that we'll soon be able to use variable vibrations to feel physical textures while, say, shopping for garments on our mobile devices. If shopping is too material for your tastes, imagine farmers being able to touch their crops out in the fields to remotely monitor the harvest's health.

On the chemosensation front, scientists envision phones that can detect biomarkers in our breath that may predict when a cold is coming, before you get your first sniffle (and it might be Dr. Watson making that diagnosis). While some of this seems even a bit far-fetched to us, it's inspiring to see what the researchers at IBM are thinking up. Check the videos in the source below to see what else could be in our future, and let's check back in December 2017 to see how far we've come.

Alcatel One Touch View teased in promo video

Alcatel One Touch View teased in promo videoOne Touch, many colours

Alcatel's One Touch View - its Windows Phone 7.8-running handset bound for Russia - has been teased in a promotional video.

Well, the phone makes an appearance right near the end, anyway. The rest of it is taken up with a character going by the name of Ricky, who tells us about his life. Which isn't that thrilling, admittedly, but does provide a glimpse of what we can expect from the One Touch View.

The One Touch View looks like being one of the first handsets to come running the Windows Phone 7.8 operating system. It comes in a range of colours, much like Nokia's Lumia 920.

On the specs front, it looks a little mid-range, but that's no bad thing. It packs a 4-inch, 800x480-pixel display, a 1GHz processor, and a 5-megapixel camera on the back. So it's not going to trouble the Samsung Galaxy S3 or HTC One X+, but then it's aimed at a different market.

Microsoft will roll out Windows Phone 7.8 to handsets running Windows Phone 7.5. It brings some features from Windows Phone 8, such as resizable Live Tiles on the Start screen. So you don't have to miss out just because you haven't invested in a Windows Phone 8 mobile.

Amazon brings Instant Video to iPhone and iPod touch

Amazon brings Instant Video to iPhone and iPod touchVids on your idevice

Amazon has brought its Instant Video streaming app to the iPhone and iPod touch, joining the iPad.

The update means owners of the iPhone and iPod touch can now stream and download movies and TV shows to their device.

Videos you've bought through Instant Video using other devices will automatically show up on your iPhone or iPod touch once you log in. And if you're a member of Amazon Prime, you can stream anything from the Prime Instant Video library, which consists of over 30,000 videos, all free.

The app launched for iPad at the end of November.

The Watchlist feature is like a wishlist, keeping track of everything you've tagged to watch later. You can add to it as you go, straight from your Apple device, then open it up whenever you want and dive straight in.

Everything you've bought or rented from Amazon will be stored in a section called Your Video Library, which again, you can open up any time and delve into.

The app is a free download, and will work with the third generation iPod touch and later, iPhone 3GS and later, or any iPad. It's also optimised for the iPhone 5's 4-inch screen.
