Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is reportedly getting ready to launch its first power-efficient eight-core AMD FX-8300 processor. The eight-core part, due for release December 29, 2012, boasts a 95W thermal design, making it a good choice for higher-powered home theater PC setups and anyone else in need of a quiet (yet relatively potent) system. It should also offer some nice overclocking potential, albeit at a price.

XBitLabs discovered the CPU listing on PC Watch, which reports a selling price of ¥16980. While nothing has yet been announced, XBitLabs figures AMD will sell the FX-8300 for $199 in the U.S., placing a premium on it compared to the FX-8320 ($169) and FX-8350 ($195), both of which are 125W chips.

Pricing aside, the Piledriver part will come clocked at 3.3GHz base and 4.2GHz via Turbo, the same as AMD's FX-8350 processor. Like that chip, the low power FX-8300 will feature 8MB of L2 cache (2MB per dual-core module) and 8MB of L3 cache. It will work with AM3+ motherboards.
