Every year, we in the mobile industry look forward to a handful of events. The Consumer Electronics Show is in January, Mobile World Congress is in February, in April or May there’s Google I/O, the month after that is Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference, Germany hosts IFA in either late August or early September, Apple announces a new phone in October or November, and right after that we get a new Nexus device and a new version of Android.
Notice anything missing from the list above? CTIA and MobileCon, two shows held in America that are typically so low profile that most websites either don’t bother showing up or they just send one person.
The people organizing said two events want to change that. They’re going to merge both shows and call it the “Super Mobile Show”. No, we’re not making that up. The first SMS is going to take place in September 2014 at the at the Sands Expo Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Will it be a big deal? It’s far too early to tell at this point. Most companies are starting to realize that it’s better to host their own events as opposed to attending one of these supersized conventions. Trust us when we tell you that big events like CES can scar a journalist for life. You don’t sleep for three days, your inbox explodes from all the press releases you get, and you’re guaranteed to catch a nasty cold that renders you useless for at least a week.
Does the world need another big wireless trade show? That’s debatable. Mobile World Congress is a pain for Americans because it’s in Europe, and CES is a pain for Europeans, so that’s why they host IFA during the summer. We’re not exactly sure what gap SMS is trying to fill, but we will keep an eye on it just in case something major happens.
