Try 'Drop', the latest game from Minecraft creator Notch

8:56 PM

The latest game from the mastermind behind Minecraft is now available. Drop is a minimalistic browser-based game that features only one thing in common with the title that made Markus “Notch” Persson an indie game star: cubes (and hexagons).

At the beginning of the game, a number of jumbled letters appear on screen. It’s the player’s job to unscramble them and form a word before they disappear and are replaced by a different set of letters. If a player misses a word, the game is over and you must start over again.

The free-to-play game could be a hit with school teachers or anyone wanting to improve their typing skills. Interestingly enough, the stark layout of the game was inspired by the ceiling design in Notch’s apartment. Furthermore, Notch drew inspiration from Super Hexagon, a game where you play as a triangle trying to escape to the next level as spinning walls close in on you. Having played both, I can certainly see the elements of Super Hexagon in Drop.

Drop was originally hosted on Amazon Web Server but has since moved over to its own server at drop.notch.net. A word of warning: this is one of those addictive games that you won’t want to walk away from once you start! Feel free to share you high score in the comments below. I would do the same but I don’t want to embarrass myself too much.
